Everything's A Weapon, Wednesday, Period One

"Alright, rookies," Reno said, leaning back against what was, perhaps disappointingly, a classroom desk instead of anything fancy in the Danger Shop today, "while I understand that a lot of you probably want to hit things today, this class we're gonna be havin' a discussion, doing some critical thinking, yo. See, improvisation is kickass, but it requires a little more finesse than just 'grab the closest thing and swing' if you're lookin' to actually do some real damage, yo. There's the thing - if you're gonna be picking something up and using it to do something it wasn't intended to do, you're probably gonna hit a few snags. Some of you have already made an art form out of usin' strategy out there - I saw some firebombs, red-hot grill accessories, some creative use of a net, temporary weapons until you could pick up the ones bein' used against you, rock throwin'... and about five hundred umbrellas bein' swung about."

Reno spread his hands a little, wearing an 'eeeh?' face.

"What made the umbrellas so attractive? Was it the reach on 'em? You were all lucky last week I programmed in some quality ones. Most beach umbrellas are cheap plastic or thin metal and are flimsy as shit. The firebombs I can get behind, but you better know damn well what you're doin' when rigging up explosives, or if you're lucky you'll wake up in the ER missin' half your face. The net, I liked. And the rocks? Tried and goddamn true, yo. People have been hittin' each other with rocks since the dawn of friggin' time. Gotta admit, I'm surprised with a whole beach full of sand, nobody went for throwin' it in their eyes, but who the hell's to say that'll even work on an unfamiliar species, anyway?"

He made a gesture around the room.

"Today, no fighting, but we're still gonna do some hands-on, anyhow. Some show-and-tell, yo. You got ten minutes to find something around this classroom, or wherever in the school you can get in ten minutes, I don't friggin' care, that you'd use as a weapon in a pinch. I want you to bring it back here - obviously if you're takin' somethin' from another room you're gonna have to put it back where you found it, and stay the hell outta the teachers' offices for this one - and tell the class what you picked, why you picked it, and two ways that the object you picked up might lead to you gettin' your ass kicked anyhow if you play your cards wrong." A beat. "Oh, and the minions of the workshop are gonna be Kaylin and Kathy from now on, yo. Would'a announced that last class, but I had burgers to flip."

Or he'd forgotten. One of those.

Celia had spent the lecture sitting on her hands, quite literally. While her magic was, of course, tied to her brain and not really to her hands, it was a helpful reminder to not use it.

Not that she was going to need to, today. She hurried out of the classroom, dipping into a few open doorways to look for anything she might be able to bring back.

Eventually, she spotted something useful, and though she had to stand on top of a chair to retrieve it from atop the whiteboard in a room, she was still quite pleased to be able to bring back something she'd found using just her eyes and hands.

"I found a yardstick," Celia said proudly, holding up her three-foot-long prize. "Obviously, you could hit someone with it, similar to a club or a lance, but it's also a bit bendy." She demonstrated, pulling the end of the wood back with one hand and letting it sway back and forth. "So not only could you strike someone with it as a stick, but you could whip it at them, too, to cause injury."

It would probably sting! At least a bit!

"Now, in terms of it going poorly, it's so bendy as to be breakable, if your enemy got ahold of it or struck in the middle, which would just leave you with two one-and-a-half-foot sticks that I suppose could be useful but probably not. Maybe you could throw them. And it's not exactly easy to grip, being this funny flat shape, so it would probably be quite easy to take away from someone, and that of course would go badly." She tilted her head at the yardstick, and added, "But if you tied cloth or something around one end, you could make a sort of handle, couldn't you? That'd add stability so it'd be harder to take away."

Barry was back about five minutes later with an armful of commercial cleaning products.

"What I have here is a couple of options," Barry said gleefully and pointed to a set of bottles. "If I use the right combination in this set of bottles it creates what I call a memory roach bomb. It's an invisible gas that will knock out anyone who sniffs it and wipes their memory. Bad side of this is that it'll wipe out anyone's memory who hasn't been inoculated against it."

...

"And if it's mixed slightly wrong I could blow up the school."

"No," Barry said with a shrug. "As long as you take the fucking precautions nothing bad will happen. Takes about two minutes to whip up as well. Depending on the type of attack I'd probably go with making small explosive devices. If I use some in a different way I could make just a plain smoke bomb as well."

"Nope. Can't control the airflow," Barry admitted. "But I'd probably only use the smoke bomb if it's in an enclosed area and needed it as a distraction depending on the type of enemy and what weapons they are using."

Minako looked around, considering. After last week, she didn't trust Reno-sensei enough to leave the room; it was probably an ambush.

Her hand shot up in the air, waving frantically to be acknowledged.

"Gomen, sensei, can I break the chair?" Minako chirped cheerfully, pointing at one of the student desk-chairs. "I won't make a mess."

Minako, you have REALLY REALLY WEIRD priorities.
