Notices had been sent out to all the students, informing them to dress for a day at the beach. In the Danger Shop. Anyway, students were met with a typical beach scene when they got to class, complete with burgers and hot dogs on a grill, and a cooler full of sodas and snacks beside it. Several large beach umbrellas offered shade to brightly colored towels leading off to the left, where a beach volleyball net was set up. There were even a few kayaks pulled up out of the water in case anyone wanted to go for a quick ride. There were also several baskets of flip-flops and suntan lotions, just in case anyone was worried about getting burned. In the Danger Shop. Even if that totally wasn't a thing.

“Yo, rookies,” Reno, who was clad in a pair of black swim trunks with happy yellow chocobos all over them, announced with a grin, “you guys have been livin' off in Fort Creepy across the water for the past weeks, so I figured maybe you'd like a break from all that. Beach party day today, yo. I know, I know, how are you ever gonna cope? I say deal, kids. Deal.”

Such a difficult request.

“The food's all real, even if the waves and sun ain't. Get yourselves comfortable and settle in. We got all class here, after all.”

Right. Because this couldn't possibly be a setup.

Ready for the Beach!

Come on, Reno can't already be blowing off class on week two, can he?

But hey, burgers!

Do beach stuff! Food, beach volleyball, swim, work on your Danger Shop tan, whatever suits your fancy!

... The hell is a Sahagin?

Doesn't matter, because all at once, the creepy, gangly fish-turtle-man things were coming out of the water for you. You might want to do something without that. With, you know, the wealth of weaponry you don't have, right?

He's spending the whole class with some lemonade, enjoying the view.

Yes, even while you're being attacked by leaping turtle-men with harpoons.

Feel free to mod your encounters - these ones will just hop around a lot and try to stab you with their harpoons - or ping down here for an NPC!

Okay. Barry wasn't buying this. Not at all.

Which is why he was looking around and seeing what was available and who the potential attackers might be.

Everyone was in cahoots. At least, that's what Celia would think, if she used the word 'cahoots.' First Eleanor, now an actual class encouraging her to wear a swimsuit.

She turned up in one of her modern sundresses, though. If nothing else, she suspected that it wasn't going to be a peaceful day at the beach, given the nature of this class, and she didn't want to get caught trying to run in a floaty little swimming costume.

Barry knew there couldn't be a normal beach day when they weren't at an actual beach.

Grabbing a beach umbrella, Barry popped off the umbrella part and took turns stabbing the fish-turtle-man things with the pointy end and bashing their fish-turtle heads in with the blunt end.

He was suddenly missing the toy store and the options that were available to him.

Yeah. Karina's face was firmly set on 'suspicious' right about now.

She'd shown up in a swimsuit, but rather than a flimsy bikini, like she preferred, she was in a simple one-piece, and her sandals were rather more substantial than flipflops.

She was giving everything about this set up the side-eye.

Zack on the beach killing monsters with a beach umbrella still ranks up there as one of my favourite parts of Crisis Core. *nods*

Karina took a seat on one of the towels, after picking it up and shaking it out to determine that it wasn't a trap, and surveyed the area coolly.

She was not so much with the relax and have fun part of this class, no.

FYI I checked the flist, saw this, and started singing "Everything's a weapon" to the tune of "Everything is awesome" and now I need it to stop.

When the fish-things came out of the water, it took everything Karina had to not bolt.

They didn't really need her to fight, right? Right?

Her towel wasn't going to be any use, so Karina grabbed a beach umbrella, closed it, and began swinging.

She was not very good at it, but she was trying, and that was what mattered. Or something. On the bright side, if anyone was paying attention, they'd likely notice that she was very, very good at dodging.

So she wasn't having much luck hurting the stupid monsters, but they weren't having much more luck in hurting her.

This was going to be a long class, given her stalemate.

Celia had known this would happen. Or, well, not known, but strongly suspected.

The umbrellas seemed like they'd prove most useful, and as soon as one of those...turtle-like things began to approach her, Celia swept a hand towards the umbrellas and picked one up with her magic. It floated out in front of her, opening in a whoosh as a shield as soon as the Sahagin got close enough.

With the enemy at least startled, if not subdued, Celia acted quickly, snapping the umbrella closed and giving the thing a whack with what now basically amounted to a large club. Maybe she could just bat it back into the water. (She could have levitated it there, but that seemed disingenuous. She was already using magic more than she probably ought to be.)

Alana figured this might be a trap, but she was going to enjoy it until that "trap" part kicked in. She spread out a towel to sunbathe -- though she wasn't going to relax enough to close her eyes.

Okay, why was almost everything that didn't look human on this planet hostile? It was starting to piss Alana off. She found a rocky bit of beach and started throwing the stones at the turtle-man-things, trying to slow them down enough that the rest of her class could get away.
