Community Service and You, Friday, Period 2, A Library on the Mainland

After your typical message, meeting at the causeway, and short bus trip, the class was at a library. The library was currently silent.

"Depending on how well you know me, you'll know that I put an extra emphasis on children who need a little help," Bruce said. "Anything from helping out orphanages to making sure children are exposed to books, that is one of the most important things we can do. And as you'll notice, we're not at an orphanage today."

Bruce timed it well, because just then a large group of children with a slightly harried-looking adult came into the library.

"I'll hold them off for a few minutes," Bruce promised. "But by the time the kids here are ready, I want all of my students to have picked a book to read and get ready to do just that."

Come on, the second you realized you were in a library's reading room, you knew you were doomed.

Find a book and read to the kids! Or just talk while other popl are reading. But it's a library, so SHHHH!

Kids? Jesus. Barry hated kids.

At least none of them were as bad as Jeremy at age five. That kid was a poster child for ritalin.

Barry managed to get the little shi- ... kids to sit down for twenty minutes as he read them Rosie Revere, Engineer (http://www.amazon.com/Rosie-Revere-Engineer-Andrea-Beaty/dp/1419708457/ref=zg_bs_3207_19).

Because if he was going to be forced to interact with kids he was going to fu- ... motivate them into the sciences.

Damn it.

And he somehow did it without swearing once.

Kathy looked around until she found the international section and picked up Cali y Mona, a story about a little blind girl and her miniature guide pony.

She didn't know Braille, but her Spanish was decent enough that she could read it. And even translate it (roughly) if there were only kids who spoke English in the library today.

Bay didn't think she had to read, but she was willing to anyhow -- kids weren't too bad, as long as they belonged to somebody else and weren't too hopped up on sugar. She found an Amelia Bedelia book to read. Making sponge cake out of actual sponges was always going to be funny.

Sia had very little experience with children, so she wasn't entirely thrilled about this. But one little girl insisted on having Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus to her, which meant Sia spent a lot of time trying to get the kids not to yell along with the interactive parts. Yeah, this was a mistake.
