Today the class was meeting in the Danger Shop because Ben needed the space--some for the class activity but mostly so he could zoom around in his amazing Swedish meatball-powered rocket propelled desk chair.

And if you didn't understand why this chair was awesome, Ben was very, very sorry for you.

"Right," he said as he zipped by. "It totally blows when your mode of transportation breaks down in the middle of nowhere and you don't know how to fix it. Since you're all from such different time periods and situations, I've come up with three different scenarios for you to work on: your horse has thrown a shoe and you need to reshoe it; your car has stalled and you need to jump it; and your hyperdrive has stopped working because someone's sabatogued it and also they're shooting at you."

Guess which one was drawn from Ben's personal experience. Go on, guess.

"You can try one, two or all three scenarios. There are instructions at each station or you can try via trial and error if you don't mind getting kicked and/or electrocuted."

You've got a horseshoe, some nails, a hammer and a horse (who is thankfully not real). Don't get kicked?

You have a dead battery car, a car that works, and jumper cables. Please don't electrocute yourself.

From the inside of a ship that looks remarkably like the Millennium Falcon, so there are instructions about how hyperdrives should work, but they might not help you. This is the only one timed--if the ship gets shot ten more times, it fake explodes and you have to start over again.

No lie, I learned how to jump a car from a commercial featuring talking jumper cables. It was disturbing.

"You're not bringing that chair into the hotel," Ender said flatly, from the doorway.

Ben burst out laughing. "Can I race it down the hall by our offices?"

"Please don't," Ender said dryly.

Barry skipped the first two and jumped right to the hyperdrive. Based on his past experience in Anakin's class he probably could have just fixed the problem but he instead tried to overhaul the drive to make it faster.

Which of course took too long so he had to start again.

"But it'll be astral!" Ben wheedled.

"I'm not sure a plan where the absolute best-case scenario is that you don't accidentally kneecap any other members of the faculty can strictly be called 'astral'," Ender said.

Ben grinned. "You're just upset I didn't offer you the chair first."

Ender shot him a very deadpan look.

No, no he wasn't.

Ben kept grinning as he leaned in to kiss Ender quickly. "Hi."

"Hi," Ender said dryly, though he did in fact kiss Ben back. "How's class?"

"Good," Ben said cheerily. "I got them to fix modes of transportation today."

"How much of them involved being on fire while someone shoots at you?" Ender asked.

"...only one," Ben said, blushing. Ender knew him way too well.

Ender kissed his cheek. "You managed to contain yourself."

"You proud?" Ben asked.

"Pleased," Ender said.

Ben beamed at him in reply. "How was your day so far?"

"Quiet," Ender said, "But that's how I like it. I took a long walk around the island."

He smiled a little. "I was going to come pick you up for lunch pizza."

"Oooh, a date?" Ben's smile widened. "Yes please."

There was a pause. "This isn't also because you've hired someone to sabotage my chair, right?" he teased.

"Would I do that?" Ender said vaguely, with a slight smile that could go either way, really.

"You absolutely would," Ben replied fondly.

"C'mon," Ender said. "Pizza awaits."

Nathan wasn't exactly sure why he went for this option but he did. The technology was a little beyond him but there were just a few pieces of equipment so he thought he could maybe get it by trial by error.

And if he shocked himself, he'd just heal up. Hopefully.
