How to Be Awesome, Tuesday, Period 3

Standing at the front of the class room after her students had filed in, Kate looked pretty perky and relaxed for someone who'd spent half the night before having an existential crisis in a hotel room and calling her poor sleepy boyfriend who'd really done nothing to deserve such massive verbal flailing at 2 AM. (In fact, Kate was pretty sure she'd spent half the time panicking at Seamus instead.) She looked just fine now. Like, she was still nervous as hell but at least it was contained.

"Hi," she said with a little wave once everyone had come in. "I'm Kate Gregson, and this is How to Be Awesome. If you think you're in the wrong place –– why the hell would you think that? Don't you want to be awesome?"

She really hoped they all wanted to be awesome because otherwise this workshop was going to bomb.

"So, yeah. In this workshop, we're gonna be going over what it means to be awesome. Like, how to feel awesome, how to be awesome in different kinds of scenarios and just generally how to recognize awesomeness in life. Stuff like that. But, this time we're gonna start really easy, with a classic: introductions!" Because she knew her stuff, okay. "I want you to tell me your name, and one thing you think is awesome about you." A beat, an she added, "Also if you're confused about the slang meaning of awesome, because that's kinda what we're working with here, tell me and I'll try to go more... in-depth with it."

Possibly by using Urban Dictionary.

"So, lemme go first. Like I said, I'm Kate Gregson. You can just call me Kate because if you try any of that 'professor' stuff I'll probably die of shock. And one thing that's awesome about me is that I went through a lot of crap over my student years here at this school, and still came out on top and could return here to share some of my insights with all of you."

She nodded, then pointed at a student at random. "You, go first."

Alana

Flick

"Hey, I'm Alana," Alana said, raising a hand in greeting. "And I'm awesome because I'm from a totally different galaxy and I don't pick on you poor Earth people too much."

It was a temptation.

"Ooh, cool, whereabouts are you from?" Kate asked, raising her eyebrows. "I mean, I'm already assuming I'm not going to recognize it, but I have to ask."

Because Arrakis was about the only space place she was familiar with to any degree.

"I"m Flick and besides being awesome because that's my name -- " Real or not, it was still awesome. " -- I'm awesome because I've got a well of resilience that I don't think many people can match."

Kate nodded. "Resilience, I will totally give you, because that's an excellent trait in this environment." Thanks, Fandom. "Why's your name awesome, though? I'm not even arguing, I just want to hear a reasoning."

"It's unique," Flick replied, shrugging. "No one else has it. Tells a lot about me if you know me."

Raven Darkholme

"It's called Landfall," Alana explained. "It's ... actually really hard to explain where it is to Earth people 'cause I can't get the galaxy names to match up. But it's like the biggest planet in our part of the universe."

"Raven Darkholme," Raven said. "And I'm awesome for a bunch of reasons, but today, I'll go with having a great fashion sense."

Admittedly, this was easier to do when you could change your outfit just by flexing your muscles.

Rapunzel

"Hi!" Rapunzel was getting better and better at this introduction thing as she practiced, seriously. Or at least more comfortable with it. "Um, I'm Rapunzel. And I'm awesome because...."

Because I have magic hair that glows when I sing. Nope.

Because I have magic hair that heals any wound and can erase wrinkles when I sing. Also not sharing that.

Maybe it was better not to mention the hair, anyway. They could already see that she had...you know. An amount of hair that maybe wasn't normal.

"I'm awesome because I can draw," she decided, looking proud of herself. The chameleon perched on her shoulder chirped, and she added, "And this is Pascal, and he's awesome because he's a chameleon and he can change colors."

She thought it was awesome, anyway. Plus he could communicate, but that was pretty normal as far as she was concerned.

Ichabod Crane

"My name is Ichabod Crane," Ichabod said, "And since the meaning of the word awesome has changed somewhat since my time, I would appreciate a definition. However, if I am to venture a guess, I would say that I am 'awesome' because I..."

Had no idea at all what he was doing in this class?

"...have eidetic memory."

"Impressive," Kate nodded. "And awesome. And, completely unfamiliar, but I'm used to that." So used to it. "Welcome to class, Alana."

"There's a slight flaw in logic there," Kate told him, a little amused, "but, I'm gonna let that slide because this isn't Ender Wiggin's class. So, welcome to the workshop."

I offer Ichabod as TA, unless someone else wants to.

"A totally acceptable form of awesomeness," Kate agreed, nodding at her. "Also, really cute outfit."

Had to be said!

"Thanks! I made it myself!" In a sense, at least. "Though I did kind of steal the idea from ModCloth."

Over her time in Fandom, Kate had met a green-skinned witch from Oz, and tried to keep Alice of Wonderland fame sane during a pregnancy.

So she was pretty good at not gawking a girl called Rapunzel with a ton of hair. "Well, he's very cute," she said instead, nodding at Pascal. "And that, in itself, is pretty awesome. And so's drawing. So, you're well on your way."

Kate raised an eyebrow. "I'll define 'awesome' for you if you tell me what 'eidetic' means."

She could... sort of guess, but it was best to check.

Pascal preened, and Rapunzel immediately rolled her eyes. "Don't let it go to your head," she told him, though he still stayed all puffed out and proud. He was cute, darn it. "And thanks! I've never thought of myself as being particularly awesome before."

Hence why she'd taken the class on how to do so. She was a girl fond of instruction manuals.

"Oh, but everyone should steal like, all their ideas from ModCloth," Kate replied, waving a hand. "I know I do."

Because seriously, all the stuff was so cute and she had so little money.

"Their stuff is just timeless," Raven said.

Mostly because it was very 50s inspired, and Raven was from 1954.

"I can recall from memory any image, word or sound," Ichabod clarified, not quite sure what to make of the question. Surely a professor would know this, even a female one?

Raven gave Rapunzel -- and Pascal -- a little wave.

They were totally going to have to think of something to do with all that hair.

"Hi!" Rapunzel whispered, though it was not a very quiet whisper. She hadn't had to practice much. Pascal actually chirped and waved back, because he was having a great time getting out and meeting people today. "Oh my gosh, I'm so glad I actually know someone in one of these things!"

"A little overwhelmed, huh?" Raven smiled sympathetically. "How many classes have you had so far?"

"Three," Rapunzel said, sighing. "And this one's my last, I think? Which is kind of nice, actually. I get the whole week still!"

Which wasn't really how she thought school worked, but it was nice to be wrong about stuff, sometimes.

"Oh wow," Raven said. "Mine have always been way more spaced out than that." Thanks for that much at least, Charles. "What else are you taking?"

"Music Appreciation and Dance," Rapunzel said happily. "I feel like these aren't normal classes but it's also stuff I don't already know, so that's okay, right?"

"It's definitely not what we learned in our schools back home." Well, music appreciation and dance, maybe, but that was preparing for debutante balls and things. Fandom's version was probably much different. "But I think it's safe to say that learning swell new stuff is pretty much the point."

Maybe someone who actually qualified as a professor. Instead of being the greatest flight attendant ever.

"Oh," Kate said, as she got it. "Photographic memory." A beat passed as she took in his appearance. "I guess you might predate that expression by a bit, huh?"

"Well, you've come to the right place!"

Kate hoped. She was yet to be completely convinced this wasn't going to end up being a disaster after all.

"We're gonna cover a whole bunch of ways to be awesome, so I think by the time this term's over, it's going to come to you more easily."

"Agreed." Raven got another firm nod, there. "So, you're off to a pretty good start. Welcome to the workshop!"

The job is yours! HUZZAH!

"Someone mentioned the word 'photograph' in connection with 'cats' and 'computers'. I have yet to see one for myself," Ichabod explained. So, a new word invented, another fall into disuse.

Felicity Smoak

"I'm Felicity. And, uh, I'm good with computers," she said. "Hacking's kind of awesome, right?"

Kate was not going to ask about whether hacking would get incriminating videos off the internet. She wasn't.

"I think that maybe depends on what you're using it for," she mused, tilting her head to the side. "But as a skill? Totally awesome."

"Well, I don't have any at hand right now, either, but I'm sure someone will get to that," Kate said. "In the meantime, though... 'Awesome', how we use it these days? Means something really great. Like something really cool."

Hold on.

"Uh, 'cool' is also slang. For something really great."
