Students filing into the music room today would be greeted to the sight of two very different looking teachers, one clad in a superbly tailored and tasteful blue plaid three-piece and the other wearing more leather than was probably strictly necessary, even for a man who was on fire under all of those wrappings.

They would also be met with what was presumably pizza, though Jonothon seemed to be giving it a side-eye as he started to speak.

//Right. Er. Hello students, and welcome to Music Appreciation, which is more or less what it says on the tin. Dr. Lecter and myself - I'm Jono, though I suppose I'll answer to Professor Starsmore if you insist - will be spending this summer term giving you all a crash-course in different genres of music from different eras. Mostly what this means is that we sit around for half the summer listening to and talking about different songs, composers, and bands, what might have influenced them, what about each piece grabs your interest or turns you off… that sort of thing.//

Clearly Jono had put a lot of thought into this spiel.

"As you might have guessed," Hannibal picked up, "the two of us have very different tastes in music." And a lot of other things. "My experience has for the most part been in traditional forms of music - orchestral, opera, and some gagaku, which is Japanese music for those of you who may not be familiar with it." Which would be most of them, Hannibal, thanks. "I'm not terribly familiar with most of the popular music of today."

//Which, of course, is where I come in,// Jono supplied. //I personally prefer modern alternative and grunge, but I'm familiar with practically anything that comes through my shop - I run the Groovy Tunes in town - so I'll be the one introducing you lot to everything from Pearl Jam to Patsy Cline. Modern folk, rock, rap...// He gave Hannibal a wry glance. //It's certainly not for everybody, but hopefully some of you will appreciate it all the same.//

"I also have some knowledge of modern experimental music," Hannibal added. He chuckled. "Which is also not for everybody, but perhaps we will try it." If anyone decided they really loved theremin.

"For today, I believe introductions are traditional. Let's go around the room, and if everybody would please tell us your name, why you're taking this class, and something about your favorite type of music. Also, if you play an instrument, I'm curious to know. Beginning myself, I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter, I am teaching this class because I have enjoyed sharing music with Mr. Starsmore, and I prefer western orchestral music. I play the harpsichord and piano and the theremin."

//And I'm Jono Starsmore, teaching this class because I want an excuse to make Dr. Lecter here listen to Nirvana,// Jono added, though there was a light, teasing note in his voice as he said so. //As I said before, I've got a preference toward alternative and grunge, but a soft spot for Pearl Jam especially. And I mostly just stick to guitar. Electric, usually.//

Hannibal was smirking a bit at Jono's proclamation, mostly because he hadn't yet actually heard Nirvana. Spoiler: he probably wouldn't like them much. He nodded to the first student. "Now you."

None of it is people. All of it is delicious. Jono is a little skeptical about the duck one, though.

Jono was planning on sticking around after class today, because he hadn't had a chance to properly noodle around with the music room equipment in ages and he wanted to see what the sound quality was like on the amplifiers when he plugged his Stratocaster in to them.

His verdict was 'pretty not terrible.' High praise, from Jonothon.

Hannibal will be hanging around, too. It seems only polite, and he does so hate rudeness.

Rapunzel

Rapunzel was very pleased that one of her teachers would be the nice man who'd talked in her head on her first day, though both instructors were getting curious looks from her. She'd settled in a chair with her hair pooled around her as best she could do, since she didn't want to take up all the room. Pascal was perched on her shoulder, not bothering to blend in, and was eagerly sniffing at the air.

"I know, Pascal, it smells amazing," she whispered.

Pascal buzzed excitedly in agreement.

"Hi!" Rapunzel felt better about this process, already having been through it once. She even waved! "Um, I'm Rapunzel, and I'm taking this class because...I really love music. Which sounds obvious, but I've spent, um, a lot of time alone? And music always kind of made me feel less lonely, if that makes sense. I don't really have a favorite type, though. Um, but, I sing! I sing a lot. And I play guitar, a little."

She hadn't brought her guitar, though, and that made her a little sad.

"And this is Pascal," she added, and the chameleon on her shoulder actually waved. "He probably won't come every time, but he's not used to just, um, hanging out without me."

Rapunzel loved cooking almost as much as singing -- at least, she felt like she did it nearly as often and was almost as good at it. This, though? This stuff was clearly special.

She tried a little bit of everything, and when she thought no one was looking, slipped a tiny bit of the arugula pizza to Pascal. It seemed sort of rude to do openly, even if she thought it was nice that her lizard wanted to try Dr. Lecter's gourmet food.

//Hello, Rapunzel,// Jono greeted, giving her a nod of his head, //and hello Pascal. You know, that's a lot of what music has been for me, as well? It's the sound of human life, where there might not be sound otherwise. People communicate through their music, just as well as they do just by speaking words.//

Hell, his guitar was the only tangible voice he had.

//I wouldn't mind listening to you play guitar at some point, actually, if you were feeling up to it. I imagine the way you play and the way I play are vastly different.//

Emma Swan

"I've never had real lessons, for one thing," Rapunzel joked, shrugging a little self-consciously. "So I bet it'll be different for that reason, if nothing else."

Plus the fact that she played acoustic, but she didn't know that there were different types of guitar, yet.

"I'm Emma, and I guess I'm in this class because I like music." Also for the food. "I don't know that I really have a favourite kind though."

Jono being sceptical of the duck just meant there was more of that for other people. Specifically, Emma.

//Neither have I, for what it's worth.// Jono shrugged, too. //It was just a hobby, at first. I kept it up because I liked the way it sounded, and the ability I had to just make something sound good.//

He played acoustic, too! One of his favourite guitars was an acoustic he'd gotten partly out of spite in the wake of a weekend when his guitar had been human.

Fandom.

//I was thinking more about cultural differences, admittedly. You're from... at least slightly before my time, if your clothing is anything to go by.//

//Fair enough,// Jono offered. //Are there any songs in particular that you enjoy listening to, at least?//

"Oh! Yeah, probably," Rapunzel agreed, smoothing her skirt a little. "I haven't heard of your, um, Nirvana or Pearl Jam. I mean, I know what all those words mean but not as music. So...there's probably some cultural stuff that's different. I mostly just play kind of slow, strummy stuff that I learned from books, you know?"

She was much more into semi-medieval ballads, and less into grunge, was what she was saying. Which, yeah, was probably obvious from her clothes.

See? Jono was a good guesser.

//What I listen to tends to be... louder, faster, and angrier than what I imagine you'll be used to,// Jono shared. //I won't be playing just that, of course. I've got a handful of weeks to try to find an even spread of modern music that represents all of the respective genres I can squeeze in, but hopefully I'll manage to dig up something that you can appreciate, too.//

Though he suspected Hannibal was going to have better luck finding music that would appeal to this one.

"I'm mostly used to listening to what's on the radio. Never really got into buying albums." Even if she'd had the money for them, let alone something to play them on, she inevitably would've lost them in the shuffle between foster homes.

She was slowly easing into listening to music on her phone. Slowly.

Cecil Gershwin Palmer

//Just Fandom's local station, then? Whatever music the squirrels see fit to play?//

It seemed a pertinent question to Jono, since different radio stations played completely different sorts of music.

"Hi!" Cecil waved a little. "I'm Cecil Gershwin Palmer." Forgive him if he sounded slightly firm about that. "And I'm here because I love music, and Mr. Starsmore's classes are fun. I like pretty much everything."
