Today class was in the Danger Shop, though McCoy was using it mostly for the adequate floor space. The floor was peppered with CPR practice manikins, each separated by a few feet. He waited until his students filed in, and then began.

"You all probably could have predicted we'd do CPR, even if it hadn't been in the course description. You'll have to forgive a man a little predictability." Wouldn't it be nice if the world were just a bit more predictable in general?

McCoy continued, "CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It's to be used to slow tissue death in the brain by providing a bit of air and circulation when breathing has stopped or is coming in few gasps. As with most things in this course, it is human-centric. Some aliens aren't going to have a comparable process. Some are hardy enough that you can shove their hand in their chest and massage the heart manually. Not recommended." Not that he'd done it himself, but he'd certainly seen it done. Bit alarming, even for a surgeon.

"CPR is sort of a last resort--without it, the patient won't have oxygen getting to the brain and will without a doubt die. CPR isn't incredibly effective, but in a few cases it can allow the body time to snap back. It can also keep someone's brain from dying for a bit until advanced medical help can get there. The latter is the better case, but this is Emergency Medical Situations. You're not always going to have that chance to get to a defibrillator or a respirator or any medical equipment. You may be their only hope to restore circulation."

McCoy got down himself next to a manikin. "I'm going to do a slow demonstration of the process and talk you through it. Pay close attention, because you're going to team up with a partner and assess one another. Each of you will take a turn with the manikin and the other will watch and critique." He did the demonstration talking them through each step slowly. And there were a lot of steps. And a lot of potential disasters.

"Anyone who isn't able to do the resuscitation on their own for whatever reason, your job is no less important." He didn't look at Jeff, but he also didn't not look at Jeff. "You still need to know this. Assume your partner's an untrained bystander, and walk them through the process as your proxy deliberately, carefully, and calmly. Just because you can't get in there and do it yourself doesn't mean you might not save a life. We'll be revisiting CPR later, so don't worry if you're not perfect now. Make sure you work out the kinks with a fake person, first, before you have to use it for real. Any questions at all, you feel free to ask for a demo again. And Mercy's volunteered to be the TA, thanks Mercy ~~if she's here~~, so that position's been filled."

Bay rubbed her hands together nervously as she eyed the mannequin and waited for a partner. She was fine doing this, but when she started thinking about how it could theoretically involve someone's actual life --

She was glad she was just practicing on a dummy.

Cade waggled his eyebrows at her. "Just think of it like kissing that you can also punch people during."

"I can't just do the making out part?" Bay wondered aloud. "It could be a whole genderswapped Snow White thing."

Mercy Thompson

Mercy was indeed here and happy to help anyone who might be uncertain about the CPR stuff. It had been a couple of years, but Bran had insisted she learn when she was still living in Aspen Creek.

Mercy was pretty good at this, so she was happy they were starting off with something she already felt fairly confident about.

"Yeah, for that one to work you have to wait for our hormones to go crazy again," Bay told him, rolling her eyes a tiny bit. "Or at least buy me a coffee."

Making out with Cade again wasn't entirely an objectionable idea, but it wasn't her priority at the moment. She tilted her head at the mannequin. "Seriously, don't you think these things are creepy?"

Emma Swan

"The dead eyes are pretty karking weird," Cade agreed, "but I've seen stranger stuff."

"Ever made out with stranger stuff?" Bay asked. "-- or maybe don't answer that."

She knelt to prod at the dummy's chest. "Well, it doesn't feel like I can break it..."

"You can't," Cade said. "You have to beat on them pretty good to crack their sternum."

Cecil Palmer

Cecil smiled at Mercy. "Hi! Need a partner?"

"Doctor McCoy?" Cecil took a moment to ask, "What if whoever you need to help doesn't have a mouth?" Hey, it was a concern!

"Absolutely," Mercy said with a smile. "Have you ever done this before?"

"I was certified, but...well, I don't know if it's still any good." Cecil shrugged. Then he looked from the manikin back to himself and frowned a little. "Also, my hands were bigger."

Joker looked around for a partner who wouldn't mind doing all the work. He wasn't going to snap his arms in half for the sake of a class, and he was grateful for the doctor giving him an out. He felt awkward all the same, though.

"Your... hands were bigger?"

"Well, I was eighteen." Cecil shrugged. "Also, these manikins look funny. Not near-dead at all."

"They... don't really look even human to me," Mercy admitted. "Are they supposed to look non-dead? I think it might be a little weird to work on mannequins that look too real, don't you?"

"But if you can't work on real-looking things, how can you work on a person?" Cecil asked reasonably.

"When I mess up in practice, I'd rather not feel quite so much like I'm hurting a real person," Mercy explained. "And honestly, I hope I never have to actually do CPR on anyone."

Cecil nodded. "Yeah, I'd rather just take them to the hospital or the bowling alley or something. Let a professional handle it."

"That's why 911 is our friend," Mercy said with a smile. "Still, I've been in a lot of places where help would never reach us in time, so it's good to know this stuff."
