Classic Video Games ; Monday ; Period 1

Today, Riley had commandeered several old Nintendo consoles for class. It was good to have geek friends sometimes. Once all the consoles were connected, Riley waited for the students to file in.

"Morning," he said brightly. "Today, we're gonna have our first real class. Super Mario Brothers might be the most well known video game out there. Ask people to name a video game and four out of five times, they'll probably say that one. The premise of the game is simple but it was pretty darn mind blowing for its time. For those that don't know, you take control of Mario, a humble plumber, and have to get through several worlds in the Mushroom Kingdom to have Princess Toadstool from the evil clutches of Bowser. Of course, there's no real explanation on how a princess knows a plumber but just go with it."

Riley did and had loved every minute of it. "This is the game that birthed the classic line that's still used today: your princess is in another castle. Really aggravating to a young kid, let me tell you. Just when you thought you'd beaten the game, you were kicked in the stomach and had to keep going."

Okay, it wasn't that bad. "Grab a controller and get going! See how far you can get in the allotted class time. See if you can find a warp tube or how many lives you can rack up and just have fun!"

With that, Riley picked up a controller and started his game up because he was damn sure gonna play too.

Topher had played this game a lot as a kid, so returning to it activated pretty much the only muscle memory he had: the gaming kind. It was still fun, even considering how ancient it was. When he missed big jumps, though, he could be heard muttering obscenities under his breath in frustration.

Oh wow, this was taking Billy right back to elementary school. He settled in and tried to remember all the tricks from playing this way, way too much at an impressionable age.

Karolina was keeping any comments about wanting a game where the princess was the one doing the rescuing to herself. Instead, she settled down and hoped she wouldn't be terrible at this.

As it turned out, she ended up failing a lot. But it didn't matter. It was still fun.

Yep, best class ever. The only thing Anya regretted was that she wouldn't have enough time to beat it.

...or would she? It was a challenge she was ready to accept.

It was possible Minako miiiiiiiight be singing along with the game music as her fingers flew over the control pad. No, that was a lie. Minako was totally singing along.

"Another castle again?!?!?!?!" Yes, she knew this was going to happen, but it didn't make her pout any less.

The Wii incarnations of Mario were more Scott's thing, since this was before his time and all, but he'd still played this a few times on his computer, so he had a pretty good understanding of the game mechanics. Well, plus, it was Mario; pretty much the perfect example of things changing but still staying kind of the same.

Plus, that theme music was catchy!

It might be super-famous, sure, but Joker had never actually played the game. He spent a few minutes getting adjusted to the controls and dying a lot before he finally got the hang of it. He wouldn't be setting any records today, but he managed to get pretty far by the end of the class.
