Literature 101- Thursday- 4th period

After the first week of class, no one should be surprised that Jess was dressed up today. No one. Because there she was, in a striped shirt and boots, sporting a pirate hat and an eyepatch.

"Arrrrr, me hearties, welcome ye t' class!" she said. "First I be asking y' to pass up yer book reports on th' meta fer Huckleberry Finn, arrr. And we're gonna go around t' room and just hear yer opinion on the book. It doesn't have t' be anything long, jus' tell me yer opinion!"

Once they'd done that, Jess started passing out this week's book and continued, "This we're we're gon'a be goin' o'er t' meta fer Treasure Island, arrr. Which is t' story of a boy who be going on travels wit' a ragtag band of pirates on th' hunt fer... treasure. We were t' be doing another book this week but th' opportunity was too good to pass up, aye. So fer next week yer t' read th' book for a discussion, jus' like last time!"

Jess wasn't actually affected by the weird pirate speech patterns or anything. She was just that committed to character.

[Sparknotes for the book here!]

Sholeh had had a long speech prepared, but having to talk like a pirate meant she was going to cut it short.

"It wasn't until I got some, err, background knowledge fer here book--"

"This here book! This here book! BRAWWWWWK!" The parrot also wasn't helping her want to talk much.

"--that I really cottoned t'the idea o' different editions. 'Twas beyond me ken before."

"BRRRAWK! Beyond her ken!"

"I'm glad I read the original, 'cause it really sank the idea home like a Spanish frigate wit' a belly full o' cannon balls."

"Like a Spanish frigate--" Sholeh was just going to hold the parrot's beak shut now. It seemed easier.

Rilla had a parrot perched on her head because there was no justice in this cruel, cruel world.

After listening to Sholeh, she silently handed over her book report in the vain hope this would get her out of public speaking. Lisping was bad enough without a pirate accent, thank you very much.
