I have a friend who works with a troupe that does Shakespeare (minus the only men part) the way it was done back then, with cue scrolls and changing parts all over. One of their concessions, though, to modern times is the addition of a referee with a whistle to halt the outdoor performances when there are noisy motorcycles or low-flying airplanes or whatever and the actor can't be heard. It's a hoot!
