“Today we’re going to talk conflict resolution,” Jack began, as she welcomed the students to a standard classroom with chairs set in a circle. “Now, maybe you’re lucky. Maybe you’re some freaky gentle soul who loves everyone you’ve ever met. But for most of us, that ain’t going to happen. There’s going to be at least one person on any squad who you could drop out of an airlock and go away whistling.

“For me, it was this woman who worked for a group that tortured me when I was a kid. Not her fault – she was a kid back then too – but she didn’t want to admit the group maybe had a couple little problems for something like that to happen. We came this close to just having a throwdown before our commander told us to knock it the f- the heck off and concentrate on our real problem. Turned out she was right.

“And that’s the main thing you got to remember when you’re trying to work with somebody you can’t stand. They may be a total jerk, but they’re still on your team. Trying to kill them means you’re wasting energy that could go to killing an actual bad guy.

“There are a couple ways you can resolve the situation. You can agree to disagree. You can find a compromise, which means everybody is equally unhappy. You can just avoid them. Or you can find somebody to mediate the fight.”

She went around the circle of students, handing out slips of paper. “Each of you now has an issue with the person sitting next to you. You get to try to work it out. If you need a mediator, raise your hand and I’ll come on over.”

Once most of the students were starting to pair off, she added, “Cade, see me after class.”

Theo scratched his head as he read over his problem. Weapons were not something he was that familiar with but...but, he'd try and make it work. Hopefully didn't come off as some weak gentle soul or something.

He didn't think Dev would let him.

Cade's hand went up immediately. "I'm gonna lay this karker out, then we'll be good."

Cade: not an expert at conflict resolution with words.

"I didn't do it!"

Call it a reflex.

"Of course not," Jack said, some sarcasm in her tone. "Listen, school tells me I get an assistant if I want one. You interested in the job?"

"Does it pay?" Cade asked immediately.

"Not in cash," Jack replied just as quickly. "Other things ... depends on what you had in mind. And nothing that's gonna get me fired."

"Combat?" Cade asked after a minute. "The real stuff--not prettified for special karking snowflakes who wet themselves at simulated violence."

"I like you," Jack decided. Not least because kicking some simulated ass would be fun for her, too. (And maybe not-so-simulated, depending on how things were going by the end of term.) "How are your Fridays?"

Mercy Thompson

"I have class on space and stealing princess," Cade said dryly, "because this school is karking insane, but other than that, nothin'."

"Don't steal princesses," Jack said dryly. "There. Class taught. And want to meet me in the Danger Shop after your classes? I can have it set up by then."

"You'll be sorry you told me that when I steal a princess and retire in luxury with the ransom," Cade said with a quick grin.

Cade made amazing choices.

"But that sounds astral."

"Kidnapping has this crazy way of backfiring, but hey, more power to you if you pull it off," Jack noted, with a grin of her own. "And awesome. See you then."
