Cultural Appreciation, Period Four
"Today is our final class together," Thor said, looking somewhat disappointed. "I hope you've enjoyed the experience, and that I'll see some of you in the class I will be teaching in the fall.
"But let's not worry about that now- today, let's talk about the sandwich. Bread and meat had been paired together in many countries across Europe and the Middle East, but for the longest time it was simply known as just that- bread and meat. The Earl of Sandwich popularized the dish in the land of England, and from there others began to request 'the same as Sandwich' when ordering their meals. Eventually, bread and meat became known as 'the sandwich'. From there it eventually spread beyond Europe to the land of America, and these days is considered a common meal that can be consumed at any time of day. According to the law here in the United States, a sandwich must include two slices of bread, meaning that food such as burritos and tacos do not fall under the definition of a sandwich."
Thor gestured to the tables, which were set up with various sandwich-making ingredients, as well as a couple of tabletop grills.
"A sandwich can be eaten cold or hot, according to personal preference. Here I have provided for you the tools with which to make whatever sandwich you choose."
