The Philosophy of Food | Wednesday, 3rd Period

The desk was back at the front of the room this week, with the students' chairs wherever they cared to put them. The food was covered, this time with identical silver lids.

When everyone was listening, Hannibal stood behind the table and spoke.

"While I like to think that food can truly be an art form, I am well aware that not everybody shares that opinion. Nor does everybody have that option. Art, preference, culture - many things affect how we think of food. One of those is economics. Availability." He looked at them all seriously. "Not everybody gets the best food. Not everybody gets food they can eat. Some people are lucky if they get anything."

He gestured at the dishes. "So. Each of you gets one of these. No peeking. When you each have your own, we'll uncover them all. If you don't like what you have, feel free to try to get something else. Barter, bargain, trade, give away, or steal, whatever you like, remembering that you may still need to see each other later. Consider this a hands-on experience."

[OOC: If you play and want to do it randomly, just click a dish below and see what you get. But feel free to check them all out and mod your results for the most interesting playing. :) ]

Hannibal approves of being evil. And of being magnanimous.

Talk to Hannibal!

Never thought I'd get to use these shirtless icons as much as I did this weekend.

Mavis lifted the lid to her dish, then frowned. "Mine's empty."

Using an online die roller Zhahar chose the seventh dish. It had...some kind of meat on it, and potatoes. She was a little dubious about the flavor--she'd never seen meat so dark before, but nibbling on it, she decided that it really wasn't that bad at all.

It was extra good with a forkful of the mashed potatoes. It alleviated the flavor some. Not that it was bad--quite the opposite, she decided with a second bite--but it could be a little...dense? Heavy? Compact? Zhari wasn't entirely sure of the right food terminology here.

Zhari was enjoying her sausages a lot, but she felt bad when Mavis opened her lid only to find nothing there. Sure, she could probably eat all of her food herself, but if Sholeh were in Mavis's position, she'd want someone to share with her little sister.

"Want some of my sausages?" she offered. "They're really good!"

"Ooh, are they warthog tail sausages? I love those!" Pardon the sniffing of your food there, Zhahar. At least it was enthusiastic sniffing?

"Ummm, I don't think so?" Zhari said, giving Mavis an odd look. Sniffing food. That was a little new. "But maybe?"

She wouldn't be surprised if they were. She wouldn't put any kind of weird food past Mr. Lecter.

"Actually," Hannibal said, smiling at both girls, "they are boudin noir; blood sausages. And I commend your willingness to share, Zhari; it is far less common than you might think or we all might hope."

Thank you! I knew I wanted to do something with economics of food, and I actually adapted this from an online lesson plan for grade-schoolers. (That one uses bags of popcorn; this is Hannibal. *G*) Anyway, I hope you enjoy it. :)

The sniffing brought Mavis to the same conclusion, but she appreciated the knowledge of what they were called. "Wow, humans really eat stuff like this? It smells great."

"There is virtually no part of an animal that is not cuisine to someone," Hannibal said. "Unless it is toxic; and sometimes even that is no deterrent."

Zhahar looked much more skeptical about eating them, now knowing what they were called and Sholeh was making gagging noises in the back of her head. Good thing she didn't have enough control of the body to make those noises audible to everyone.

*They were...are good!* she told her sister sternly.

::Says you,:: Sholeh declared. ::Zee and I didn't get a chance to try them. So, ew.::

"You can have a couple," she told Mavis. "There's enough to share."

"I'm far more used to sharing than I am not," she told Professor Lecter. "It's a pretty big deal back home. Only the most selfish eat everything when there was someone nearby with nothing."

"By that definition, there are many who are selfish." Hannibal nodded at the dishes. "There would be little point in this exercise if everybody could be relied upon to trade and share fairly."

Zhahar shrugged. "I grew up where everything was tight, but when we worked together, nobody went without. Not everyone here can say the same, I bet."
