The Philosophy of Food | Wednesday, 3rd Period

The classroom this week had been shifted around a bit. On one side, Hannibal had shifted his desk and set chairs around it, making as decent an approximation of a dinner table as was possible. Not his finest china, but good dishes and silver nevertheless. On the other side, a neat blanket was spread out, with a well-crafted wicker basket in the middle. The dishes in it were sturdier, and the silverware plainer.

"This week, we are not talking about food." He quirked his lips in a tiny smile. "We're talking about how other things relate to food." He waved between the two halves of the classroom. "What sorts of food does each of these settings demand? What sorts of conversation and manners? What culture do you expect of each?"

Between the two halves, he'd set up a few desks; all the food was set there. "This week, you need not choose. Sit where you like; move between the two. But think about this - when you choose your food and seat, is it only because of taste? Or is there a reason you prefer one over the other? What behavior do you feel is warranted in each place? What is most appropriate and most comfortable?"

This class saved Atton so much money in breakfast. ... Wait, he didn't pay for breakfast, did he?

He pondered that as he munched on a potato chip, failing to care entirely about the flavor beyond 'not horrible'.

Rilla drifted toward the chocolate cake first and was trying to figure out how on Earth the sorbet looked like roses.

Emma went for the picnic setting, rather than the ones that looked like they might break if she looked at it wrong.

She put some of everything on her plate, even if she had to get creative with stacking so nothing fell off.

Zhari hesitated between the two places. Her stomach was clamoring for the picnic blanket and the simpler dishes. They seemed easier to relax around. But the food was so fancy, it almost seemed a shame to eat it off of anything but the pretty dishes at the table.

In the end, she went with the picnic blanket. "There doesn't seem to be anything that needs a table to keep from being messy," was her answer out loud, though having other people to sit with played in a factor, too.

Hannibal gave her a little bow. "No bugs in this chocolate. It's a little spicy, but the sorbet should complement it nicely."

Hannibal eyed Emma's plate a little dubiously. "Very resourceful architecture. You can come back for seconds, though."

"A happy byproduct of the dishes," Hannibal acknowledged. "I wanted to make the portions small enough so that those who were so inclined could try everything."

He just shrugged at the fact that they all seemed to prefer the picnic setup to the formal table. They were teenagers; he wasn't terribly surprised.

"It's not as pretty, but it works." Emma didn't trust in seconds being available, in her experience you took something when you had the chance or it would probably be gone before you changed your mind.

Hannibal eyed Atton and tried (not very hard) not too be too insulted by the lack of care to his food. Some people had no sophistication.

"True. But I am a fan of presentation." He smiled. "Still, that is my job as the host; the guest may place their food anywhere on their plate they like."

He could possibly see something in her that reminded him of being hungry. "If you would like more, I could fix you a second plate?"
