Introduction to Meditation | Tuesday | Period 1

Like last week, the classroom was dimly-lit and cushions were scattered around the floor, with a table in the back for water and tea for after the session. Unlike last week, on each cushion, there was a fortune-cookie-fortune-sized slip of paper with one single word on it waiting for whoever sat there.

"Today we're going to be going in a very different direction from last week," Bruce said, "using a technique called story meditation. I find it a little more engaging than your basic mindfulness session, so if you had trouble staying awake last week, you might prefer this." He took a seat on a cushion, as weird as it felt to be sitting on a pillow while facing the class like he had any authority. "Story meditation involves creating a narrative in your own head around a general or specific prompt or theme. Afterwards, analyzing the story you created can shed some light on the way that you think. It can also be... soothing to create something without any obligation to record or recount it, though you're welcome to share your stories after the session if you'd like."

These stories sometimes got weird, though. Bruce wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to keep them to themselves.

"Today I prepared prompts for each of you, but this works best when you don't limit yourself - feel free to diverge from the original topic as much as possible. We'll be at this for a little longer this week than we were last week - thirty-five minutes - so if you want to run in a circle in the hallway to get your energy out first, you're welcome to. Otherwise--" he set a timer on his watch-- "let's begin."

So apparently I've used this form of meditation to fall asleep every night since I was a tiny, tiny child.

Good to know.

Either Billy had too much caffeine before class or not enough, but his story meditation ended up focusing on actual growth a la Hank Pym. A 50 foot Wiccan was probably the last thing the world needed, but the imagery made him smile nonetheless.

Jackson did not want to think about trust, especially with this being the day after the full moon, and him having handwavily spent it in the basement at the mansion again. And yet he still found himself circling around the theme, getting back to it every time he thought he'd escaped it. It didn't make much of a coherent story, but at least he was still and sort of focused. Mostly.

With his eyes closed, he was occasionally having a hard time blocking out the sounds of everyone else's heartbeats and breathing.

Natalie was present and available, despite everything on her mind.

This class was pretty close to what she needed during this term, it was turning out.

Paranoia wasn't a bad prompt. Jim took a few breaths and then started thinking up a story about never being able to step out of his father's shadow and becoming some husk of a man who lived like his stupid uncle.

The paranoia seemed to come through in that Jim was the only one who thought he couldn't get out of the shadow and spent his whole life yelling at everyone that they were wrong.

Not a great story but it would due.

"This week gave my mind something to do," Jim said which meant he liked it better. "Not...sure I really wanna share my story because it's not happy but let's just say I didn't turn out very good in it."

Victor let his mind circle the word wonder for a bit before it landed on an image of a magician. He pictured rabbits being pulled out of hats and lovely assistants being sawed in half. There wasn't much of a plot, but it was fun to think about.
