Jung (Thursday, (02/16/2006, 7th Period)

"We've gone over the attitudes of introversion and extroversion, and you guys have said they seem kind of limiting. Which is absolutely right. That's why Jung came up with four functions that modify the attitudes. Those are thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuition.

A little more information on how introversion and extroversion work as regards the unconscious: Extroverted individuals are more concerned with their external world, other people, and other things. Introverts are more concerned with their own thoughts and ideas. Pretty much what you'd think. Generally, whichever one isn't dominant is unconscious, and so you're drawn to the non-dominant aspect in others as a way of expressing the unconscious side of your personality.

Now, the functions. Thinking and feeling are defined as rational functions, and they're directly in contrast with each other. I expect you'll find this stuff pretty easy to remember when we have a test, right? People using the thinking function? Use their intellectual functioning to connect ideas and to understand the world. Using the feeling function means you're making decisions based on your positive or negative feelings about subjective experiences.

The other two? Sensation and intuition. They're called the irrational functions, because they relate to stimuli, not evaluation and decision-making like the rational functions are. Sensing is physical, related to the five senses, and generally conscious. Intuition is usually about hunches and is unconscious. Everyone exhibits all four functions, but the most highly developed? Your superior function. Second most developed is the auxilliary function. Jung didn't have a term for the one that came in third, but the least well-developed function is the inferior function.

Often, your inferior function is explored through dream and creative work. Which is what we're going to be prepping to do. Ask your questions now--about today's subject or anything we've covered--because next week is all about using what we've talked about in class so far for dream analysis.

"We're doing dream work?" Rory asked. "Do dreams always mean something? Sometimes I just dream about, like, cake. Does that mean something deep and significant?"

Anakin looked uncomfortable. "We're going to learn about our dreams?"

He stared at his desk. "Great."

Rory glanced over at him and smiled.

She tossed a note over.

There is no way I'm sharing my nightmares. Completely going with cake dreams.

Dreams about cake sound good.

Anakin paused.

Because my dreams. Yeah. Not going to share glimpses of the future.

Rory nodded.

I had a dream about cake last night.

This could possibly have to do with the fact that I have Cally's birthday cake still in my fridge.

Now I want some cake. Mmm. Cake.

It's chocolate with orange frosting. It's entirely possible I might be a bad friend and just never get it to Cally.

I would of course never encourage such thinking.

But, hypothetically, if the cake were to disappear--maybe we could blame it on Steve?

Invisible cats like cake.

These things do happen.

I've heard that.

Man, now my stomach is totally growling. This is all your fault.

Snag some of that cake away from Steve and we can call it even...

Hmm. Decisions, decisions....

Anakin gave her a deeply pathetic look.

Please?

Rory sucked on her pen thoughtfully.

I suppose. But only because you look so very sad.

Anakin grinned.

I win.

Been back to your room since ACJ?

Rory tilted her head at the page, raising a brow.

I stopped by on my way to see John this morning before I opened the library, but not since. Why?

Anakin looked shifty.

No reason. Wasn't sure if Steve had already eaten the cake or something.
