Hunting 101 - Wednesday

There was an assortment of items on the table at the front of the class, neatly laid out so everything was visible.

"Today we're gonna talk about the tools of the trade," Dean said. "Aside from a can do attitude and moderate death wish."

Hunting: fun for all the girls and boys. Just like a slinky!

"If it exists, there's a way to kill it. These things are the most basic items you can use on a majority of the crap out there."

Sam shot Dean a dirty look in the hope that he could discourage him from mentioning death wishes and, you know, scaring their students. "Salt is great because you can find it just about anywhere, and it can be used to guard yourself against evil spirits, and to keep them in place if you can get a circle of it around them fast enough."

Bitch, please. Dean was made to scare students. "Works on demons too. Won't stop 'em for long, but a face full of salt will sure ruin their day. And we know what you're thinkin'. Salt? Really? It's an old school purifying agent. Think of it as nature's response to the freaky shit in the world. Which would lead us into another old school purifier... fire."

"The only way to really get rid of a ghost or spirit is to burn whatever's keeping them tied to here. Usually it's their bones but sometimes you have to get creative," Sam said. "You also have to be careful--salt won't hurt you if you use it wrong, but fire... well, you know."

"Don't set your own ass on fire." Thanks for the clarification that they didn't need, Dean. He cleared his throat, picking up the iron poker on the table. "Iron also works on ghosts. Hit 'em with it and they can't hold themselves together for a little while. It's a handy club if dealing with other monsters too."

"Holy water... okay, that's probably a little harder to get unless you go to church a lot and bring a flask with you, and it's probably not something most people have on hand, but hey, that's what this class is all about," Sam said with a smile.

"We got a sheet with the blessing for you guys," Dean added. "Hope you brushed up on your latin."

"And if you didn't, we can help," Sam said quickly, shooting another look at Dean. It was creepy how all Deans had the same annoying qualities. "Take a look at some of the stuff we have and see if there's anything you think you can use."

All Deans were the best, Sam. Learn to live with it. Or, you know, end up in hell. Too soon? Too soon. "Partner off and think up what else you think should be in your hunting kit."

AKA: Sam and Dean have different teaching methods.

Maybe you should include something for the burns that you know will happen.

Because who didn't want to talk to Dean about hunting? Really now.

Yeah, very little of that was even close to what would be on a similar list in Alec's universe, and as he looked around for a partner, he might have looked like he was fighting the urge to tell Sam and Dean that. Sigh.

Actually, Raven was pretty sure a face full of salt would ruin most people's days, if it were thrown there unexpectedly. Salt in the eyes did not sound comfortable.

"You ever get the feeling," Raven asked quietly, moving over to sit by Alec. "That these guys are making it up as they go along?"

"Or working from a very strange, fictional book," Alec confided. "Hi. I'm Alec."

"Raven," she said, offering her hand. "You don't believe in ghosts, then?"

Alec shook her hand. "Not exactly." Though he believed in other things, because he knew they existed. Ghosts, though... eh. "And the methods they're suggesting just sound really... stereotypical, I guess. And they didn't even mention weapons."

"The salt is a little weird," Raven admitted. "And they're worried about us setting ourselves on fire with a box of matches. They're not really likely to just hand us guns."

"Good point." Alec made a face. "If this class was someone's only exposure to this material, I'd be pretty concerned about what would happen when they got face-to-face with an actual demon."

Alec, it was Week 2. Don't be a brat.

Raven frowned. She'd been called "demon" a time or two, back before she'd learned to blend as well as she did now. "I want to know how they make sure what they think is a demon is an actual demon, before they start throwing salt in its face."

"In my world, they're usually pretty easy to spot," Alec shared, brow furrowing. "Because they look... nothing like anything mun-- uh, people are used to seeing. Claws, fangs, pincers..."

Weird colored skin, perhaps?

"In my world," she said softly. "Sometimes that's just what people look like."

"Not in mine," Alec said, but he softened because it sounded like a sore spot. "But even so. Recognizing -- what to attack, I guess, should have been the first class."

"Definitely," Raven said. "I hope they at least know not to attack unless whatever it is is actually hurting someone."

"Well, that's the Law, where I'm from," Alec said. "These two... don't give me the impression that they work via legal methods. So I'm not so sure."

"You have laws for this stuff where you're from?"

Mercy Thompson

Mercy looked around for someone to pair up with.

She'd be bringing her foster dad's elephant gun loaded with silver bullets for one thing. He'd always said it was pretty much the only thing that could get a werewolf to sit up and take notice - or lie down and take notice as the case may be. She made her own silver bullets and everything.

It was still weird to admit this to random mundanes, but it had become a force of habit lately. "Not for everyone, but for the people who are supposed to hunt these things, yeah," Alec said. "I'm something called a Shadowhunter. Which makes me sort of an expert."

Shadowhunters had ego problems, generally.

Raven nodded, side of her mouth quirking up. "Then why are you taking this class?"

Karina Lyle

"Hey," Karina said, taking a seat by Mercy. "Did any of that sound useful to you? Besides the fire. Fire's pretty obvious."

Even if her tastes ran more to ice.

"I know cold iron is good against the Fae," Mercy offered. "And holy water can't hurt. My, well, guardian always insists everyone wear some sort of holy symbol, a cross or something, against vampires."

Her hand went to the lamb necklace she was wearing.

"Cute necklace," Karina said, smiling a bit. "Can I ask what it means? I can't say my parents ever told me any of this stuff... but then, my world doesn't have anything like what the guys," being the teachers, "were talking about."

"It's for Christ, the Lamb of God," Mercy explained. "Most people wear a cross, but I... don't."

"Um... do you mind if I ask you where you're from?"

"Sternbild," Karina said cheerfully. "I'm American, though it's a different America than this one. I still don't know what New York City is doing where Sternbild should be."

Honestly now, Sternbild was way better.

"And, huh, I didn't know about the lamb bit of the whole story."

"I think that's one of the coolest things about this place," Mercy said. "Everyone's from different cool places. There's so much you can learn."

"I'll try to consider that a plus," Karina said lightly. "Are you from around here? Or a world similar?"

"I'm from a world a lot like this one, except that where I'm from the Fae have outed themselves." Mercy shrugged. "And a lot of the supernatural stuff is real, too just not many people know about it."

Sam was there, looking through the supplies and wondering if they needed more holy water. He supposed the church wouldn't miss it...

Anna Korlov

"Your information is inaccurate," Anna informed Dean bluntly.

"Not where I'm from, sweetheart." Was it going to be a blunt off?

"Where I'm from it would get you killed." Looked like it.

"Common problem with amateurs hunting," Dean shot back.

Anna did not look impressed. "Bad information? I can see how that would be a problem, yes. I just don't think you should act like rules are universal when they're not. You can hit a ghost with a poker all day where I'm from; all it's going to do is annoy it." Her. It was going to annoy her. You could ask Carmel and her baseball bat.

"Or it will give you enough time to get the hell out of there," Dean replied. "I'm not reaching kids how to go out and hunt things down. I'm telling them how to survive an encounter. You in this class for a reason or just here to complain?"
