Combat Tech, Tuesday Morning (1st Period)

The Danger Shop had been set up as a gun range of sorts, though there weren't any walls between them and the targets up ahead. In turn, the targets looked a lot more like... well, not targets, precisely, more like--

"Shields," Kaidan said. "Personal armor has been a part of combat for as long as our species has been around. They've come in a lot of different flavors, but they're all meant for the same purpose: to deflect projectiles or melee weapons away from the wearer."

He walked along the range, pointing at each target in turn. "In the Stone Age, shields were made of wood or animal hide. It worked against the weapons they knew back then. Nowadays-- not so much, as you're going to find out. As time went on, we added more parts to the concept, like combining leather and wood or adding metal reinforcement. Of course..."

He stopped by one of the targets. "Then guns happened. A projectile propelled by a gunpowder combustion or a mass accelerator is going to punch right through a wooden shield. It generates a lot of force. We've been trying to figure out how to deal with that ever since. In this particular day and age, that means armored shields and ballistic body armor. That's using a combination of strong fibers weaved together to deform the shape of the bullet and spread the force around. Sometimes they come equipped with metal or ceramic plates to keep the worst of the force off certain body parts."

Kaidan still sounded like he thought this was all really old stuff.

"Finally," he said, pointing at the last target - which was really just a stick surrounded by a nearly invisible field that occasionally flashed with a hint of orange. "Kinetic barriers. An invention of my time. Using trace amounts of element zero, they emit small mass effect fields. These fields are calibrated so they invert the force of a small projectile, causing it to bounce off in the direction it originally came from."

There was a brief spark in front of him. Another kinetic barrier, running the entire length of the range.

"On that table, you can find a series of projectile weapons ranging through several eras," he said. "You're welcome to try them out on the shields I've set up. You're also welcome to play around with the duplicates I've got sitting over here." He nodded at those. "Feel free to tinker."

As far as Jessica was concerned, the best kind of shield was the ability to dodge. She realized that not everyone had the ability to do that as well as her, of course. But still. Dodging!

Still, the lecture was a pretty good one, and the kinetic shields seemed pretty useful.

Yeah, in this case, Jessica went straight for tinkering with the kinetic shield. Look, in her world, traditional shields had reached their apex with Cap's. There was little of interest with those unless they were the perfectly-balanced, seemingly indestructible, round disc of liberty and justice for all. The kinetic shield was much closer to crazy Stark technology, so she was all for that.

Jim went with the spear first, deciding he'd work up to the gun in a little while. Besides, he'd never actually thrown a real spear before and having that ability might be handy in the future.

He heaved the spear at the ballistic body armor and watched it strike but clatter to the floor. Maybe he just needed to throw it harder.

Victor started out testing the spears, but eventually -- when he was fairly sure no one was paying too much attention to him -- that turned into testing his lightning bolts against them.

Some of the older shields stopped them, some not so much, but the one from Kaidan's time bounced it right back at him. That was so fascinating Victor didn't mind that it also hurt a little.

Like Jessica, Anakin jumped right into an in-depth examination of the kinetic shield; spending most of his time on the Errant Venture meant that a lot of it was used cobbling together combat training droids from whatever spare parts Booster had lying around, so new and different technology was a welcome variation.

Plus, he wouldn't argue with a chance to see if something might be adaptable for use back home. Any advantage, right?

Shields! Orange shields? Alright.

Anya made a mental note to inquire what was element zero. She hoped it wasn't some revolutionary thing Coke was putting in their drinks, though.

So Anya was going to shoot a lot of things at the kinetic shield.

It involved a lot of gasping and dodging, but even without her enhanced reflexes Anya was fairly good at not getting hit. "Do these ever run out of juice though? It seems to me they need quite a bit of energy to work...unless this element zero is like, awesome."
