Combat Tech, Tuesday Morning (1st Period)

"Morning," Kaidan said as soon as everyone was seated. "Welcome to Combat Tech. For those of you who haven't been in any of my classes - I'm Lieutenant Commander Kaidan Alenko. You can call me Commander or Professor Alenko, I don't care which."

That was a real range of options there, Kaidan.

"Over the next couple of weeks, we're going to be looking into the combat application of various forms of technology. Obviously Fandom isn't always the safest place to be, so if you haven't been acquainted with this kind of tech before, this is going to be a useful starter. For those of you who are, we're going to be building on your knowledge with some safer tech."

He looked around the classroom.

"This," he said, his fingers sliding over his arm and calling up a device that fit along his wrist and hand - it looked a lot like it was made of solid yellow light. "Is my omni-tool. It has a lot of non-combat applications. It's chiefly a communications and manufacturing tool. However, that means it's got its combat applications. For example, I can manufacture chilled or heated metal that can then be deployed at an enemy."

He dropped his hand away from it. "Since this is introductions week," and he was a complete, boring traditionalist, "I'd like to know your names, your classes, and your familiarity with this kind of technology. I'd also like to know what you'd like to learn to defend yourself from, if anything."

"I'm Jessica Drew. I'm going to be a senior. Or, I guess I already am, it's tough to tell with summer. And I guess don't have much practical experience with combat tech, but I've spent some time with it in the lab," Jessica explained. "And in terms of defending myself, I'm just looking for a general overview. I'm from an apparently crazy world where you never know what's going to attack next."

"Jim Kirk and I'm gonna be a senior," he started, glancing around at the class. "As for combat tech, well, I'm from centuries in the future when spaceships are common and we get cozy with aliens all the time. So, I know about guns when it comes to spaceships and futuristic weapons."

He had to think about the second part of the question. "I don't really know what I want to defend myself against. Maybe...something that's bigger than me and better equipped?"

He still figured he could find a way to win but it was the best answer he had.

It's, uh... it's the funk soul brother. Essentially. He's, uh. He's... coming atcha.

"...How crazy are we talking here?" Kaidan asked. Because he'd seen a lot of crazy. And because... well, because, uh. You know.

"A gun already levels the playing field between you and a larger opponent," Kaidan pointed out idly. "Better equipped-- well, what kind of equipment have you got over there?"

"Victor Mancha, another one who's gonna be a senior," Victor said. He was still a bit wary about the teacher, but the passage of a year had put him more at ease -- and anyhow, the class sounded too cool to miss. "I've piloted a vehicle fitted out for combat, and run into a few other things here and there."

"And I'm from the same kind of place as Jessica -- just about anything might attack, so I'm more interested in an overview than in anything specific."

"Guns. Not something I've gotten a chance to get up close and personal with -- " Stupid school regulations and stupid laws. " -- but phasers are a big weapon of choice. Hit someone with that and they can disintegrate."

"Really." Kaidan's eyebrows shot up. "You have any idea how that works?"

Just... professional curiosity.

Kaidan nodded. He'd posed the question about, uh, what to expect to Jessica already - he was going to give that a miss this time. "What kind of vehicle?" he asked instead. "What were its capabilities?"

Anakin Solo

"Anakin Solo," he said, making a visible effort to be relaxed about it and not seem like introducing himself for the millionth time was some kind of horrible imposition. He spent more time in his own galaxy than he did in Fandom these days, for the sake of being there for Tahiri while she recovered, so he couldn't really begrudge the necessity. "I'm a junior, and I've been around all kinds of combat tech my whole life. I'm pretty familiar with how most of it works in my galaxy, and how to fix it. Astromech droids, starships . . ."

He shifted uncomfortably, and a flicker of unease crossed his face. "Even massive superweapons. But the thing I want to work on defending against the most is . . . well, they'd hate it if I called their weapons biotechnology, but that's essentially what it is."

"Directed energy from what I gather," Jim said, trying to remember back to some books he'd read on the tech. "They fire nadion particle beams to get the desired effect."

"We call it Leapfrog," Victor answered. "It's a land-based vehicle that basically, um, hops from one place to another. Looks like a frog. Anyhow, it can cross the country in a couple hours. And it has lasers."

The lasers were cool.

"Huh."

Thanks, Kaidan. Very descriptive.

"I'll look into that. See if we can't come up with something."

"...How do the lasers work?" Be thorough, Victor!

Kaidan crossed his arms. "Are we talking flesh molded to metal, or gen-engineering?" he asked, thinking about it.

Trying not to think too hard about husks.

"Gen-engineering," Anakin answered promptly. "Everything from insects bred to use as throwing weapons to living ships that interface directly with the pilot's brain."

He remembered Tahiri's horror at how thoroughly the cognition hood had done that in her one attempt to fly a Yuuzhan Vong ship, and grimaced.

He shrugged. "I don't know if that really counts as combat tech here."

"It's on the edge," Kaidan said finally. "I mean-- the Alliance does its fair share of gene treatments to buff up the marines. It's not as drastic, but it's considered a technological advantage."

Anakin smiled wryly. "It's all from a certain point of view, granted, but the species we're dealing with thinks our standard tech is an abomination, let alone trying to fuse the two. They'd be furious to know I've done it."

"You have, or you want to?" Kaidan asked, his brow furrowing.

"I have done it," Anakin clarified. "Just once, and it was a lot trickier than I expected."

"So... what did you do exactly?"

Okay, Kaidan was here to teach, but it wouldn't hurt to take some knowledge back with him too.

"The inventors aren't around anymore, so I've never seen schematics or anything," Victor cautioned. "But as far as I can tell from playing with it ..."

The explanation of Leapfrog's weapons mechanisms that followed would satisfy Kaidan's every hope for thoroughness -- and possibly make everyone else's eyes glaze over.

"-- and also you can detach 'em and then they're basically a laser gun," he finished. "But we don't do that much."

Kaidan was going to jot down some notes after class - he looked way too excited for a guy who'd just listened to a whole list of technical specifications.

"I think we can work with that over the next few weeks... uh, if you don't mind some questions, obviously."

That poor class.

"My lightsaber depends on having a focusing crystal to help generate the blade," Anakin began. "I managed to blow mine out dealing with a gravitic anomaly -- that's how they propel their ships, using creatures that produce them, but it fused the crystal in my lightsaber. And I really needed to repair it, but I was stuck in an enemy camp, pretending to be a slave."

He grinned slightly. "A slave who just happened to be assigned to work harvesting plants that produce living crystals. Lambents are useful; they generate light, and they'll actually respond to mental prompts, but only if someone's attuned to them. That was a bit tricky to learn."

Victor shook his head, looking pleased with himself for a guy who just recited a whole list of technical specifications. "Nah. It's a great design. Totally good to talk about for class."

He was going to have to tell Chase about this.

"The past few years, we've had everything from alien invasion to a supervillain hitting Manhattan with a tsunami to a highly evolved brand of human from another dimension taking over a large part of Europe," Jessica said. "So fairly crazy."

Anya Corazon

"I'm Anya Corazón, and I'm a sophomore? Right?" Anya said, perhaps with a bit of hesitation.

"I mostly signed because it sounded cool? I've never handled any kind of tech whatsoever. Nothing above remote controls, of course."

"Uh huh," Kaidan said. This had to be about the first real newbie he'd ever had. "Anything you're worried about attacking you, or... just worried about the remote giving you a static shock?"

"Nope and nope. I mean, remotes can't really do that...right?" Anya asked, because she had trusted the little things so far. "I'm mostly...excited? Yeah?"
