Flight- Monday- 3rd period

"Welcome back, guys," Jaina greeted the students when everyone had gotten to the flight shed. "Last week we covered something from my galaxy, now we cover something from this planet. Today we're talking about the F-14 Tomcat, which was first introduced in the Vietnam War and was retired a few years back. Still, that's a good forty years of service in there. They're two-seaters, with wings that swing back and forth automatically in flight, and have an internal cannon along with being capable of carrying a few different kinds of missiles. So they could do some damage.

"Today you're going to fly one of these in a dogfight. Your primary goal is to not get shot down," she went on. "And as an added challenge, I went ahead and did this same simulation earlier. Try and beat my score."

Well, Cade was definitely going to try to beat Jaina's time.

Shhh, flying brought out his competitive side.

Cade lasted about thirty seconds before failing to account for gravity and crashing in a fiery conflagration, not coming close to Jaina's score.

He'd teach anyone around him all sorts of new Huttese curses.

Korra...did not do so great. It didn't help that you couldn't airbend in the middle of a simulation.

Karina was so doomed.

Though she sort of looked forward to the challenge. She was rather used to being thrown into the deep end, after all.

Karina... didn't do that great.

Not that she'd expected she would, what with her inexperience, but she still wished that she'd done better. That would have been nice.

Evan was starting to realize that this was definitely the class to take if you wanted to take 'trial by fire' kinda literally. He wasn't a shooter, was the problem, and while he had his powers, eye blasts wouldn't do him any good in a closed cockpit.

Evan could focus on flying, or on fighting. And he did fairly good at the first, for a little while, but it was the second that caught up with him and sent him spiraling out of control to the ground.

Between powers, video games and the 'Frog, Victor figured he had an advantage. But overconfidence almost got the better of him as he moved too fast at first, almost diving straight into the ground in an evasive maneuver that didn't go as well as he'd hoped, but he drew the nose up at the end before catastrophe struck.

His score wasn't quite as good as Jaina's because of the learning curve, but it was more than respectable for a first dogfight.

Billy managed to last for twenty seconds, which was about twice what he was expecting. Shooting at people was a lot harder than he expected.

Emily actually did a pretty good job, what with her usual lack of fear and killing instincts showing up when she felt competitive and wasn't forced to put on a nice face all the time.

She didn't get close to Jaina's score at all, but she felt like she did a pretty good job none the less.

Topher had the killing instincts of a crumpled-up paper towel, so he lasted about four and a half seconds. When he exited the simulation, he muttered something to the effect of having gotten tangled in the seatbelt, which was not only a lie, but also more embarrassing than the truth.

Was a complete barrel roll really necessary for evading those bogeys? That depended on whether you were Ace.

Wait, she was supposed to be firing at them, too?

"Note to self: get a gunner so I can concentrate on the loop-de-loops."

Said she as she plummeted to the fake ground, fake tail-section trailing fake smoke.

Beating Jaina's score was not going to be on the agenda for today.

Bucky Katt

Re: Take your turn

[identity profile] monkeymonkeydie.livejournal.com 2013-01-22 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Bucky didn't realize at first that the other planes were his opponents in the simulation, and he fired off all of his missiles at a flock of birds in the distance.

When the first shots hit his plane's tail, Bucky turned around in his seat and started shouting insults and curses in the enemy plane's direction. He only turned back to look at the controls when the missile lock-on warning started going off, but instead of taking evasive action he started yelling at the alarm for being so loud and annoying.

Of course, he'd bumped the stick with his tail when he turned around, so soon the ground proximity warning alarm was also going off.

Getting anywhere near a decent score wasn't going to happen. The plane slammed into the ground and exploded, and then two missiles hit the wreckage before the fireball had died down. It was epic.
