How to Start a Business, Monday, Period 3
"I don't know if anyone here got to go on the field trip over the weekend. I hope you did," Zayne said. "As a someone from space myself, I think it's a good experience getting out there and seeing what other planets have to offer. Of course, I'm probably biased."
"Anyway, last week we started a section on advertising. I hope the video really solidified the point that advertising can really establish a for your product, sometimes independent of whether or not it deserves that mood. There's more than a few terrible products that have been propped up by a really good ad, after all."
"I don't think anyone here really has a specific product in mind, which is fine. You can really build an ad around anything. Around a store, a corporation, or just a vague brand and a feeling. And actually, sometimes having an ad that tells you absolutely nothing but gives you a feeling. One of the most famous ads this country has seen was for a computer that didn't show the computer, didn't tell you what it did, and was an extended literary metaphor. It aired during the Super Bowl, which isn't really the place you would have expected something like that," Zayne said. He then played the commercial so that everyone was on the same page.
"That's one of the most popular Super Bowl ads ever and helped that computer make an impact when it hit the market," Zayne explained. "If they can pull that off, I tend to feel that advertising can really manage anything."
"So, what we're doing today is starting to come up with how you want to advertise your business. Something like a boutique might work best with local television commercials and print or online ads in appropriate publications.A biotech company is probably going to stick to trade publications unless they have a defining product ready."
"So what I want you to do is think about what kind of advertising might be best for you and then come up with a central idea for your ad. It could be a complicated literary reference. Or it could be focused on something much more specific. It's all about how you think you can sell yourself best."
