Wild Roving, Thursday

"So." Sparkle was the one taking point on class today, and, for all that he'd never done this before, he was looking pretty at home there in front of the room. Possibly because his BS skills were fairly unparalleled. "Over the first half of the semester, the teacher's covered things like finding out where you wanna go, how you're going to afford it, what you're going to do so you're not bored out of your skull, that sorta thing. This week, you're going to learn about what to do when things go bad on you."

Beware.

"Just keep in mind, I haven't ever left, like, Earth? So what I picked up on Google might not be everything you'll need if you're wandering around without money in some outer-space settlement where they just eat people who can't pull their own weight. In that situation, my best advice is just don't get eaten. Duh.

"Here and now on planet Earth, though, we have this thing called a passport. It's like this little book-looking thing with an ugly photo of you in it and information like where you live an crap. Good luck travelling to a new country without it, but for the love of whatever, don't lose it once you get there. That might be your only ticket home if you get mugged, or screw up your budget, and you're stuck there without money and a way to, you know, eat. Provided you have one of those, you just find your way to an embassy - which is like this official chunk of home dirt in the middle of a foreign country - and... I dunno, make sad eyes and beg them to deal with it for you."

Sparkle's experience abroad was ... well, he'd wandered lost in the African bush with two guys from space. That was about the best he had.

"If you're not from Earth and you're stranded here, there are generally shelters you can go to in developed countries. Places where people with nothing at all can go, get a warm meal, get back on their feet, maybe make a phone call for help. If you're stranded somewhere not-Earth... Stay calm. Be careful. Watch your back. You keep an eye open or ask around if you speak the language, and you might find something to keep you fed while you wait for rescue. There are usually small businesses, inns or whatever, that'll give you room and board if you're willing to work for it. You might get the short end of the stick, but, well, beggars can't afford to be choosers."

A beat. Sparkle squared his jaw, just daring someone to call him on the fact that his experience with inns was limited more or less to stuff he'd picked up from video games. RPGs totally counted as real life experience. They did.

"Just don't start begging. At least, not until you know what policies there are regarding panhandlers. Better hungry and free than locked up in some prison somewhere. Trust me." He shrugged. "I dunno. If you guys know of anything else, since I obviously can't speak for every reality or whatever out there, talk about it? What people stranded in your hometown would do in that situation, or what you've done, or whatever. It'll be good to know."

Aw yeah. Sparkle rocked at this.

"You could also kill monsters," Yeul suggested, "until you had enough money to buy a tent."

Not that Yeul was the sort of person to kill monsters but it was what Caius did if they needed money. Or if they needed food.

Totally, completely serious, Sparkle.

"I suppose it would depend on if your world had monsters," Yeul conceded. "But mine does and they drop various things that can be sold. Or used to customize weapons."

"Metals," she said, tilting her head. "Seeds, fruits. Some you can scavenge fangs and wings off of." Ooze was a pretty common drop too. "Even if they don't drop items, though, most have money that you get from them."

... that did probably not help the whimpering brain.

"I do not rightly know," she said honestly. "That has just been how it has been forever. Monsters have money and if you take them out, you get to keep the money as well as any items they might drop."

"It depends on the monster," she admitted, "but most of the ones around towns are rather easy. So long as you have something that can be used as a weapon," so, like, a stick, "they will go down."

She blinked. "Come and visit?"

To kill monsters?

She had not meant for it to be one but...

"Yes," Yeul said, because he seemed interested and she saw no reason to say no. "It is."

Caius would be so thrilled. Really.

"... If you would like it to be, I mean."
