A Tale of Two Lions, Period 2 [Monday, 9/24]

The students were summoned to the Danger Shop today, where they would find themselves in an arid desert plaza, looming buildings surrounding them, the crowd kneeling, and a tableau before them. In which stood a younger version of their female instructor, alongside her brother.

The scene paused, and Ghanima came out of the shadows to stand alongside her younger-double, who was focused on the prophet in the plaza. "This was me, just shy of my majority birthday," she informed the students. "Daughter of the prophet, Muad'dib, firstborn of the sacred twins. Niece of the Holy One, the Blessed Saint Alia of the Knife. And a Princess Royal of the Known Universe."

"My family took power by co-opting the myths of the Fremen, the desert people of Dune, when my father was not much older than all of you. And at the same time, those myths came to define us, and it is easy to wonder where myth ends and destiny begins."

"Here on Earth, with such a smaller scale, it is sometimes easier to see where religion ends and power begins, so long as you are not blinded by it."

"So today we will watch a documentary about one of your largest Earth religions and their seat of power - the Vatican."

Tyrion didn't know as much about this story as he would have liked to, so he was paying as much attention to the film as some of the students.

Ulrik was here, watching the documentary with a sort of detached interest.

"There are those inside the very church we're learning about today who are doing their best to use their power to sustain a war, in my world," Ulrik spoke up. "My father was even allied with them for a time. They are doing their best to manipulate people's fear of the unknown, and although they were successful at first in seeing many rivaling powers ally together against what they felt was a common cause, their League is beginning to crumble."

"It's different in my world," Karla said. "We have faith and belief in the Darkness, but our religion isn't as organized. The Priestesses do not speak for the Darkness and while they are equal in caste with Healers and Black Widows--" with Black Widows being the first among equals, of course "--it does not rely on inborn Craft the way the other castes do. They oversee many of our rituals, but they don't hold the same power and belief in my Realm as they did in this film."
