Seven Deadly Sins, Period #5, 7/3 [Pride]
At the appointed class time, there was a pink-colored woman standing in front of the room. Aside from the prominent horns, the flame-red hair, and the aforementioned pink skin -- which almost looked like it could pass for an strangely even kind of sunburn -- she looked like a corporate executive. Oh, and she had expensive shoes. As you do.
"Welcome to class," she said. "My name is Callie Maggotbone, and this class is called The Seven Deadly Sins And Why They're Not So Bad. If that's not the class you signed up for, leave. Or stay. I don't really care. Before you ask, I'm a demon. If anyone has a problem with that, I -- you know, I don't actually care if anyone has a problem with that, either. Leave, or don't, just don't ... whine to me about it."
Callie was Good with Kids.
"So here's the deal. The seven deadly sins are just big, scary propaganda, and this class wants to tell you how. If you've never heard of the seven deadly sins, here's the deal: one of this world's major religions published a hit list saying these seven actions were the worst things anyone could do. It's not specific acts like 'murder' or 'shoving an old lady in front of a bus' -- it's mostly emotions and motivations and so on. See, that's where the spin comes in. If you really look at it? Most of them are either telling you not to do things your body is inherently programmed to do, or working to break your spirit to get you in their system of control. It's all head games, kids."
Of course, it was a demon giving the class, so ... grain of salt.
"We've got seven classes so we're going to do a sin per class. This week we're starting at the top: Pride. Pride's the sin that all the other sins stem from, they say. Pride is when you puff yourself up big. And yet -- and I got some text from Wikipedia, because I couldn't find a decent source that made this point, but bear with me:
She cleared her throat, and glanced around at her students. "Hey, does it seem odd to you guys that 'pride' refers to two totally different things? One of them is good -- confidence, trust in your abilities, self-worth -- and the other is bad -- having too much of that, believing that you have abilities that you don't, and being a jackass. It's almost like some people were trying to make self-confidence seem like a bad thing. You know, so that other people would be scared to brag too much. Someone starts thinking he's good at what he does, next thing you know, all his neighbors talk about what a proud man he is and bam, suddenly nobody's his friend any more."
Just a theory she had, that was all.
"Self-esteem is good. Self-worth is good. Patting yourself on the back when you've done a good job? I do it all the time. So for the whole stupid introduction thing that all classes have to do, tell us something you're proud of. Sin a little. And feel how good it feels to be confident and determined and proud."

Pride is an inwardly directed emotion that carries two common meanings. With a negative connotation, pride refers to an inflated sense of one's personal status or accomplishments, often used synonymously with hubris. With a positive connotation, pride refers to a satisfied sense of attachment toward one's own or another's choices and actions, or toward a whole group of people, and is a product of praise, independent self-reflection, or a fulfilled feeling of belonging.
