When the students arrived this morning, they would see Angela and Savannah perched on a desk at the front of the room. On either side of the desk were two large easels with large pads of blank paper on each one. There were two coffee cans of markers on the desk next to the easels, and a bowl with folded slips of paper.

Angela hopped up from her spot at the front once it looked like everyone who was going to arrive, had. She was getting into this teaching lark. “Welcome, all of you, to Art Games. I know a few of you should remember me, but for those who don’t, I’m Angela.” If she had you last session and you fell in the latter category, she was offended guys, she really was.

Savannah grinned. “And I’m Savannah. I graduated from here two years ago.”

“We just couldn’t stay away,” Angela joked.

“There’s something that just keeps pulling us back here.” Or, it was the promise of paint guns, one of the two. “So, today, we want you to tell us your names and count off by twos.”

“Everyone’s going to ask you for intros this week, so we’re going to play a little game instead.”

Savannah held up the bowl and shook it a little. “In this bowl are slips of paper with words or scenes written on them. Your assignment is to draw the scene or words on the large paper for your team -- but they have to be pictures, no words. The team that has the most correct guesses by the end of class, wins.”

“There is a TA slot or two open. See one of us after class if you want in,” Angela added. “There might be cookies in it for you.” They were definitely not above bribery.

Angelica took a slip of paper and drew out her word (http://i48.tinypic.com/x6bgcp.jpg)¹.

¹Angelica is a much better artist than her player.

Arietty stared up at the sketchpad, debating. On the one hand, the few beans she'd let see her so far had been very nice, and she did seem to be signed up to attend this school. On the other hand, that sketchpad went way up.

And up. And up. And up.

Well, nothing for it but to try, and hope no one screamed or tried to catch her in any traps. She lugged one of the smaller markers out of the coffee cup -- a process that involved pulling out some of her Borrowers' climbing gear, including a javelin made from a straight pin and tiny suction cups on her feet -- worked off the cap, then promptly dropped the marker in an effort not to over balance and fall off the easel.

". . . Can I use a crayon?" Those were much less unwieldly, and she had one in her backpack.

Hanna Marin, 1

Hanna reached for a slip of paper, and then attempted to draw the word (http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l165/Landslide418/Miscellaneous/Random/hannaart.png) she picked. She wasn't the greatest artist ever, but it looked recognizable? Maybe?

"Sure you can, Sweetie." Angela was lacking any specific knowledge of the best way to draw while very, very tiny. After a lot of years around this school, that was actually surprising...

Arietty seemed to be managing extremely well as it was, but, "We could lay it flat for you, if that would help?"

Kenzi, 2

Kenzi was blinking. And trying not to stare. Then giving up and just going with the staring. "Dude. Is that climbing gear?" Because it was a doll sized person with Mission Improbable gear, how cool was that?

"Ooh, I know this! Martini," Hanna guessed. "I'd recognize one of those anywhere."

Wow, did she make herself sound like a lush.

"Close!" Angelica said with a grin. "You're being too specific."

Ryan Clark, 1

"Hey, you're pretty good at this! It's a giraffe, right?" said Ryan, grinning.

Arietty considered that. She was never one to back down from a challenge like dangling herself in front of an easel to draw something, but she didn't want to give any of the beans heart attacks if she fell or something. "That'd be good," she decided. "I'm more used to drawing that way."

"I'm usually told to be more specific," Hanna said with a laugh. "Um...is it just a regular cocktail? Or alcohol? Or just drink?"

She was trying to cover all the basics here.

"I would have also accepted sad excuse for a giraffe," Hanna chuckled.

"But yours is really good! There's no second-guessing or wondering if I've made the right choice. I just had to look once to know it was a giraffe," said Ryan. "I love that you added the background, too."

Cassie Blake, 2

Savannah was enjoying how everyone seemed to like their first class.

"Not that I don't love the climbing gear, that's very cool," Angela assured her as she stepped up to offer a hand. Just in case that was ever in question.

"Thanks," Hanna said, beaming a bit. "Figured colorful grass and sky was better for the giraffe than a blank void."

Ryan took a stab at drawing her word (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/thena8572/guess.png). It didn't seem like she had a talent for drawing, though, and felt she might have been better off stabbing the paper.

"Cocktail, that's it!" Angelica said. "Maybe I should've drawn a little umbrella or something."

She passed the bowl of paper to Hanna. "Your turn!"

Hanna reached for a slip of paper and raised an eyebrow. "This should be interesting."

Angelica squinted at the drawing. "Candelabra?" she guessed.

"Close," said Ryan. "You're on the right track, just not quite there yet."

"Well, it looks like it's hanging, so...chandelier?" Angelica said.

"Now you've got it," said Ryan. "In hindsight, I wish I made it clearer that it was hanging from the ceiling."

"Thank you," Arietty said, quite pleased. "I made some of it myself. The rest is from my dad."
