Superheroing 101, Thursday, Period 4

No, hold that thought. Sarah looked mighty pleased with herself today. That's right, there was no uniform today: she was in civilian clothes, even if they seemed to have major hints of the grey-black-green colour scheme of her work outfit. And why was she pleased? Well, probably because today, the Danger Shop was an English pub. A London one, to be precise. The interior was dark but sort of cozy, and there were lots of patrons milling about, carrying pints to private booths or the tables scattered around. It was not just any bar, though, and the eagle-eyed among the students would probably come to notice the names of the beers and liquers – Salíne Bitter, Green Lamp Ale, Shazamstell Light, Bottled Beast – behind the bar and on the adverts on the walls were unfamiliar, yet maybe somehow not to some of them.

(Somewhere, Deadpool was weeping at not being there to see it.)

Sarah was leaning against the bar, looking right at home. "Welcome to the Fortress, kidlets," she said. "Today, we're taking a break from looking at superhero problems. Instead, we're looking at superhero downtime, and you're in luck, because the SPA didn't specify what I was supposed to talk to you about here." How foolish of them. "See, where I come from, what we do on our downtime is get pissed." A beat. "I mean that in its proper meaning of 'really fucking drunk'." Because she was a Brit, dammit. "And here is where we do it: the Fortress. Capes-only bar. No masks, no powers, no heroics. Just good old-fashioned boozin'."

Except...

"Of course, this is as fake as Cher's face, plus this is in a class room, so all the booze is non-alcoholic but on the upside, you also don't have to pay. So, your task today is to mingle and chat up some of my esteemed colleagues about what it's like to be a superhero. They're only simulations but they should act enough like the real thing." Yes, even Monkey Thunder. "I would've gotten the real thing, except I couldn't be arsed. Also, this has a higher chance of me being able to keep Don from hitting on you. Now, scram. I have fake beer to attend to."

She's having too much fun talking to simulated version of her friends. Who she does not miss so shut the fook up.

Even if the booze wasn't real, Raven tried to avoid drinking ~~except when her player thought it funny to get her accidentally drunk~~ because of the effect it had on her gifts, so she wasn't about to pretend to start indulging here. She got a glass of water instead and looked around the pub.

Stephanie Brown (telling bar stories, man, it's all about the bar stories)

Yeah, Stephanie wasn't really much for drinking; it was generally a bad idea to indulge in anything that impaired the senses if you wanted to survive wandering around Gotham City at night, and that was in civilian guise. If she even thought about doing that on the job, which she wasn't thinking about? Hooooooooooooooooboy.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuut if it was non-alcoholic, well, then. She ordered a pint of the Green Lamp Ale and relaxed against the bartop.

. . . there were superhero bars? Really?

Of course she'd be incredulous about this. She hadn't met Beryl Hutchinson yet.

Luke Castellan

"A glass of water?" asked a heavily accented (Spanish) male voice from beside her. It belonged to a 30-something guy with curly black hair and an all-black suit. A rosary hung around his neck. "Is a pub, why you not drinking?"

Someone bounced over to Stephanie. With the woman's body shape, there was pretty much actual bouncing happening in parts, yes. "Hello, little one, I don't think we've met," she chirped, pushing her glasses up before offering the girl her hand. "I'm Jenny. Who are you?"

Cheer was practically wafting off her. No one would ever believe this was actually a really accurate simulation of their teacher's best friend.

Stephanie might. It was sort of the same dynamic as her and Cass. Sort of.

"Stephanie," she answered, not at all put off by the cheer; actually, it made her smile. "Never been here before."

"I generally do not consume alcohol," Raven said, turning toward the man. "It has an effect upon my gifts, and I would not want to lose control of them." It being a superhero bar, she could be honest about having powers, right?

"Oooh, it's your first time?" Jenny cooed with a big smile. "How exciting! Is it your first time in a cape pub in general, or just the Fortress?"

"I'll have to default to D, All Of The Above," Stephanie decided. "I didn't realize these things existed!"

A simulated superhero bar, even. It was about the safest it could possibly get.

The man looked at her like he had trouble understanding her point. This was mostly because he liked solving problems with alcohol, yes. "What kind of effect?"

"They do!" Yes, Jenny. She probably got that already. "This is the only one in this part of the city – unless you count where the supervillains hang out – but there are a few more elsewhere. Us capes, we need somewhere to unwind."

"And boy, do I know some who could stand to unwind more than others," Stephanie said, all exaggeratedly confidential. La la la, don't kill me, boss, it's only true! "Wow, that makes sense."

And would get attacked so many times if it existed in Gotham.

"Hard work, huh?"

"It is," Jenny said with an emphatic nod. "But we endure it because it's for the good of everyone. Even if we're sometimes under appreciated, we can rest easy in knowing we've done some good, and that's what matters."

If Sarah had heard any of that, she would've rolled her eyes. A lot.

Kate Daniels

Oh, Stephanie liked her. "Wow, now that's the right attitude to have," she said admiringly. "If the heroes in my world did it for the thanks there'd be a lot less of 'em." Secret identities tended to compound that problem.

"Well, of course, there are some differences of opinion ––" And here she tried to be discrete about her significant look towards where Sarah was laughing at the simulated bouncer. "–– but I like to think that's what the job is really about."

"If I become intoxicated, I have a tendency to project it and make everyone around me drunk as well," Raven said, her cheeks turning pink with embarrassment.

Raven was great at parties when it came to limited quantities of alcohol.

Elphaba Thropp

What, no Norse Dave?

Elphaba looked about and shrugged. She walked to the bar and ordered a glass of cranberry juice, because she didn't think alcohol would be appropriate during class, even this class.

He frowned at her. "I don't understand. Is a bad thing?"

Because it sounded wonderfully convenient even to his simulated ears. Clearly Electroclash had done a wonderful job with rendering this place accurately.

I... am prejudiced against Vikings?

Or maybe I forgot about him. One of those!

Heee. I think I am the opposite of prejudiced against heavy cynical bald dudes.

The tall, bald man behind the bar grumbled something about 'kids today' while he served Elphaba her cranberry juice. Meanwhile, the bouncer's voice preceded him on his way towards her.

"Whoa, what's this?" he asked. "Can't you read? No masks, that's the rule. That includes face paint."

"And it's not paint," Elphaba said, rolling her eyes just a bit. "Feel free to test it if you really don't believe."

She held out her arm, while simultaneously giving the man a bit of a look.

"Surely I'm not the only one like this."

The bouncer gave her a look right back even as he reached out to touch her arm.

When the colour didn't come off, he got confused for a moment. But he was quick to grasp at the next condemning thought. "Well, there's no using powers inside the Fortress, either!"

Because sure, she'd have a power that turned her green at will. That would just be really useful, wouldn't it?

"So I'll make sure not to accidentally set you on fire," Elphaba said, keeping as even a tone as she could manage. "Or slam you against the floor with my magic. I was born this way. Honest."

That last word dripped with frustration. She was used to being treated differently, but that didn't make it any less of an unpleasant experience.

He frowned at her suspiciously for a moment longer, then straightened up and nodded, slowly, deciding to let it go for now. Still, he pointed two fingers first at his own eyes, then at her.

"Okay, but I'm watching you," he informed her. "And I won't hesitate to summon my Monkey Thunder on you if there's any... green magic happening."

"...Monkey Thunder?" Elphaba replied, incredulously. "You summon... loud monkeys?"

That seemed ridiculous. Who'd have monkey henchmen?

"I summon monkeys," he replied, indignantly. Because the distinction that they weren't particularly loud made all the difference. "Yes."

Squall Leonhart

Hooray, a bar.

Squall sat down on a stool and stared at the counter. When the bartender came to take his order, he just said "surprise me" and shrugged.

A-yup. This was Squall, mingling.

Yet another thirty-something made his way loudly to the bar. Possibly because he was yet to run into the simulation of his arch enemy on the other side of the pub, or something.

For now, he was being obnoxious. "Make way for the Hotness!"

Squall looked up at The Hotness and raised a dubious eyebrow. "Did Professor Electroclash pick your superhero name, too?"

Shane Gooseman

Oh yes, there was so much judging coming from Billy's direction. He was more than a little horrified by the bar setting, and was just grateful no actual alcohol was involved.

"It is if someone does not wish to become drunk!" Raven said. "I would not wish to force such a feeling upon someone when they do not want it."

She had the strangest feeling he was going to next ask why someone would not wish to be drunk.
