Studio Art | February 7th - Period 7

A different slightly demented nun video is playing for the Studio Art students. This one about visual composition.

Homework- I want you each to find me two artworks, one with what you think is good composition, and one with what you think is bad composition. If you can tell me why you think so in each case that would be good but not necessary.

Manet's La Music Aux Tuileries (http://www.abcgallery.com/M/manet/manet5.html). Though the scene is crowded, he cleverly uses the trees to break up the field of vision and avoid the bulls-eye problem. Likewise, though the crowd itself seems to violate the rule of "less is more" the trees provide a way to look at the people in different groupings, depending upon one's angle.

This painting (http://photoinf.com/General/Johannes_Vloothuis/landscape_composition_rules/Fig_8.jpg). The road is straight, therefore making the visual path too fast.

Jaye's not sleeping! She's just resting her eyes.

She is so the best TA EVER.

"This one. The tree on the left draws attention away from the animal. The animal ought to be the focus."

"This one doesn't suck," Jaye says, looking over Monet's The Boat Studio. "At least it looks like he's going somewhere."

Jaye would have thought Warhol would be easy to pick apart. It wasn't. "This one took me a minute to figure out what it was, cuz it's cluttered or something. Then I looked at the title. Which is Shoes. And then I was a dumbass."

Parker found this (http://galleries.artpassions.net/parrish/ecstasy2.jpg) and said, "I like the composition, because the clouds' swirl echoes the way the wind moves the girl's dress. Also, the straight lines of the mountains gives it some structure, so you're not lost in the middle of all the softness. I think this (http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/pic/AWI/GH1042~100-Campbells-Soup-Cans-Posters.jpg), on the other hand, has boring composition. It's repetitive. Hypnotic to the point of catatonia."
