Professor Chaucer's Office Hours, Tuesday

Professor Chaucer is in his office throughout the afternoon today (any time fifth period or later, until his eighth period class). However, the door is closed. If you could see through the door, you'd see that he's asleep with his head on his arms at his desk. Pity the poor poet. He's having a bad year.

(Seriously. Chaucer is not in a good place right now. He is not a good person to come to for advice. He will not take kindly to antics or practical jokes. If you come to emo at him, he will emo back at you. And he has an excellent vocabulary for emo. He is, after all, a poet. However, if you are very nice and bring him coffee and no bad news, he may wake up long enough to look sad and say thank you.)

Phoebe, being Phoebe, brings Geoff in a thermos of coffee and pats his shoulder before going back out.

Kiki, looking in, sees the depressed poet and stands in thought for a moment. She then goes back to her room and digs out a package of Oreos and brings them down for him. Because those are even better than coffee.

Bel came by Chaucer's office to ask for a suggestion on a good poem for Phoebe, but once he peered inside and saw him asleep, he headed back to the library to find something.

Geoff raises his head and smiles. As Phoebe leaves, she hears a soft, "Thanks, Phoebe."

He looks up when Kiki returns, giving her a half-hearted smile. "Are you doing better, Kiki? I got a call from your friend at the bookshop, and he said you'd been sick."

Phoebe stops and turns to him. "Anytime, Geoff. That's what friends are for," she says softly. "I'm here to talk to if you need me, okay?"

"Bel, is there something you needed?"

Geoff looks up. Normally he'd just let whomever it was go, but Bel was a friend of Phoebe's, and Phoebe was a friend of Geoff's.

"I don't want to disturb you," Bel said. "I was just looking for a poem to send to Phoebe and thought you might have a good suggestion. Something that says she's beautiful and I love her, stuff like that."

"Yes, much, thank you," Kiki replies with an encouraging smile. She'd tell him more, but he doesn't look like he needs to hear it. She plunks the package of Oreos on his desk, the opened end towards him. "Cookie? They always make me feel better."

Given how many theraputic biscuits she's needed lately, it's a good thing Kiki has an insanely fast metabolism.

He nods, giving her a sad smile. "Thanks. Not today, I don't think. But...maybe later."

The fact that Kiki thought to bring the cookies and try to cheer him makes Geoff feel better than the cookie itself probably would -- although that's really the point of it, isn't it? -- and he nods and takes one. "Thank you. I know we should be doing your independent study meeting today, but...I don't think this would be a good day for it. Are you free later in the week?"

Phoebe nods in understanding. "Anytime, Geoff. My phone and my door are always open to you."

Paige has brought not only coffee but muffins too, not that she's worried he's not eating properly or anything, she's just a very good temporary house guest.

she sits on the other side of the desk, "eat."

((sorry you're not feeling well))

"Of course. Let me see..." The request perks him up a little, and he turns his chair to pull a book off the shelf behind him. "Off the top of my head, I'd suggest maybe Byron? She Walks in Beauty is a good one." He lays open the book to show Bel one of the poems in it.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impair'd the nameless grace

"That's okay, because I'm still so far behind on everything, I could use the extra time," Kiki answers, taking an Oreo herself. "And I'm completely free on Thursdays now, since I don't have a job anymore."

"That sounds great!" Bel said, smiling. "I think she'll really like that. Can I make a copy of it?"

Since he hasn't eaten since Monday in Baltimore, it's good that Geoff has such a thoughtful temporary house guest. He raises his head and gives Paige a wry smile.

"Yes, m'lady. Eating." He takes a muffin and picks at it. "Thank you for looking after Cash. I'm sorry you got stuck with that -- I'll be more on top of things after this."

[Thank you :)]

"Go right ahead. You can borrow the book if you want, or I can write it out in calligraphy for you if you want something fancy-looking."

He grins a little. "Or were you planning to serenade her?"

"I'm sorry to hear about that. I know the two of you were friends. Why don't we pick up next week, and have a good long discussion to catch you up?"

"Thank you, Phoebe. I really mean it. I promise I'll call you." He gives her another smile. He gestures at the coffee. "I appreciate you stopping in, and I know it wasn't just to drop off coffee."

Phoebe smiles. "You know me so well," she admits. "I know you will when you're able. You'll do the same for me."

She gives him a small smile, "It's okay, my teachers were suprisingly cool with me bringing him to class and he's not the worse company I've ever had. I thought maybe I'd pick us up something for dinner tonight, if you want, cos otherwise it's going to involve me cooking and I'm sure neither of us wants that."

And yes she's not asking him how he is cos she iknows how he is and if that's verbalised to her she's likely to cry and that's not good in any way at all, for either of them.

"Fancy-looking would be great if you have the time," Bel said. "I want to give it to her with some roses. And, um, yeah, I'm going to serenade her, but I don't know what song yet."

Kiki nods. "That works for me," she says, standing up. "Feel free to keep the Oreos," she adds. "If I took them with me, I'd just end up eating them all."
