Autolycus looked considerably worse for wear this morning. Anyone who could read latin might notice the phrase "Banned from Pompeii" scribbled on his forehead in red ink.

"Ancient Roman art was based heavily on Etruscan and Greek art, so much of last week's lecture can also be applied here," Autolycus was completely ignoring the fact he didn't actually say anything about Greek art last week. "Therefore instead of a lecture I want you all to write me one hundred words on why the Romans were such dull, boring, unimaginative, stuck-up prigs."

"The Romans be dull, borin', unimaginative prigs. Most o' their art be either based on someone else's or stolen outright. They be thinkin' that jes' because they were runnin' the whole world at the time that no one be noticin' that they be not havin' terribly original thoughts. Although thar be somethin' t' be said fer the roads 'n the aqueducts, but that be not art, so that be not countin' in this particular matter.

The Romans? Far too full o' themselves. They be remindin' me o' the Spanish before thar Armada be sunk t' the bottom o' the channel and the English be rulin' the world.

Not that England be havin' great art at the moment. Mayhap ye can either run the world or have decent art, but not both. I be ponderin' this later."

Lee turns in 100 words on how unimaginative the Romans were when they took the sun god Apollo from Greece and didn't change his name despite changing the names of EVERY OTHER GREEK GOD they stole. Motherfrakkers.

Well, no, he really didn't. But he did~~n't~~ snicker it relatively quietly.

Vala frowned at what looked like "vexillum ex Pompeii" stamped on his forehead. She made a note of it in case it showed up on a quiz later or something.

Vala stops by after class. "Um, is that a new tattoo?"

The Romans were unimaginative prigs because their gods were generally Gou'alds who never did an original thing in their entire lives and copied and stole from everyone they could and then declared themselves all high and mighty and stuff and wow should you see what a stick they have up their... um... sarcophaguses when you say anything at all about how they aren't just the most wonderful things ever existing and 'prigs' was the best you could hope for out of a situation like that really and also they took everything from the Etruscans and Greeks, because they were lazy that way.

"Vala, good to see you back on your feet," Autolycus grinned and started rubbing his forehead again. "Oh, this? Just a little something I picked up on the weekend."

Angela turns in 100 words vaguely describing Roman art and regurgitating Proffessor Autolycus's lecture.

It's not her best work. She has a lot on her mind.

"Oh, yeah, about that. I've got a note (http://community.livejournal.com/fandom_clinic/63112.html?thread=2931080#t2931080) if you need it... I mean, you saw me there and everything, so...." She shrugs. "Oh! And did I need to make anything up from the lab I missed?"

"Like you said, I don't really need it to see it, but your thoroughness says good things about you," Autolycus rubbed his chin. "Well, you can't really do the exercise by yourself, so let's say one hundred words on Greek sculpture this time next week and we'll call it even."

"O.K.," Vala said, smiling. "Thanks, Teach!"

Xander blinked at the assignment, but OMG not stupid. If Teach wanted a treatise on why somebody sucked, Xander could totally ~~pull something out of his ass~~ oblige.

The Romans were totally boring ~~except for the orgies~~. Their kings were this big long list of names with ius on the end who didn't do anything to make you remember which was which ~~except for the one who made his horse a Senator which really wasn't much batshittier than some elected officials now Governator McSchwarzeneggar we're looking at you~~, and their art isn't nearly as ~~sexy - whoa hi arms~~ interesting as Greek art, because it pretty much *is* Greek art. ~~Though if that means Lee has to take his shirt off again, I say go plagiarism! Choose shirtless plagiarism!~~

He stared at it for a few seconds after he'd written it down. It didn't look like 100 words, yet it felt like he'd written that many. Huh. Xander shrugged and turned it in.

The Romans liked to depict warriors and heroic adventures. Lots of the art show the foundation and rise of the city and their complex relations to their almighty gods. The Romans copied a lot of Greek sculptures so we should be grateful to them for being such unimaginative twits because they without them, we wouldn't have many complete images of Greek works. An example of this can be seen at the British Museum, where an intact second century (CE) Roman copy of a statue of Venus is displayed, while a similar original Greek statue at the Louvre Museum in France (500 BCE) is missing its arms. It is very interesting because they use different materials such as, sticks made out of wood, to make their art.
