She's back to her older self. She has coffee and a message and you'd better pay attention and take notes.
The personal is political, gang. What does that mean? It means every single personal choice you make will align or be in conflict with someone else's choice. Those who are alike come together in speech communities. Core beliefs do not change, however as you go through life you'll figure out what constitutes beating your head against a wall and what is the easier path; no...not the easiest...just easier than the aforementioned head-beating. No matter what you choose, you have to get involved. When I was young, and I don't mean this week, I mean when I was actually young and idealistic, I burned my bra. I raged at the State. I protested for women's rights for control over of their own bodies. Are you aware that even today in some places women cannot get birth control prescriptions filled by their local pharmacy? Everyday issues such as your representatives in student council, the government on the local level are clearly what you'd think of as political, but even the interactions of commerce and social grouping are political actions you take that define your self. You want a frightening fact? 25 years ago, half of all 18 to 24 year-olds voted. Today it's 25%. 18 to 24 year-olds represent 33% of the population but only account for 7% of the voters. Decisions are made by those who show up! Are you going to sit by, passively doing your work and keeping your head down, just to get a grade? Is your personal political statement going to be "Willing submissive to the hegemonic paradigm" and when will you open your eyes to what is going on around you? You don't have to partake in anarchy, Ghandi didn't. He pioneered non-violent protest. Ghandi's political statement changed his world...and the world as we know it.
So if you're wondering why I teach communication, it's because I think you can do so much better in life. If you can articulate yourselves in a manner befitting change...I just know you can change the world. Revolution always comes from the new generation. I don't care what you do, gang. Just get up and do something.
