Sex Cultures: 6th Period
"Aphrodite. Venus. Certainly not the first goddess of love and beauty, but perhaps the most famous. Her cults worshipped her with offerings of incense and the sacrifice of doves. She was celebrated during the festival called the Aphrodisiac, especially in Corinth where she was the patroness.
And of course, she has been captured by artists for centuries in their work, from the Ancient Geeks and later Romans, right through the present day."
Grissom then plays a slideshow for the class.
"While you are watching, I want you to select the depiction of Aphrodite that most appeals to you. Then I want you to share with the class why it was your favorite, but also, how you think where you are from affected your decision."

"I liked this one best because it shows aphrodites' beauty better than many of the earlier depictions of her, also it's quite understated and tasteful. And I guess the fact I've chosen one of the few clothed representations of her show that I come from a society that sees nudity as something to be embarrassed of"

Once it's over, Shep decides that this one: http://www.bergerfoundation.ch/wat4/zoom_english.cgi?dia=55 is the most interesting.
"Yeah, coming from the US in the current day, and being... you know... a guy, a skinny girl with long hair is much more interesting than a faceless head on a coin. And I get that back in the day heavier was more beautiful because it went with being wealthy, but you know... I'm not a product of that culture.
Now some of them are a little more with the T and A, but Mars being all blissed out and done in by this chick... that makes her sexy. And she just sits there with this smug 'look what I did' face. The little dudes with the ears sneaking in to steal Mars' stuff while he's all basking-in-the-afterglow is amusing too."

"I liked this one because it's got the god of war in it, and it looks like he's protecting the goddess of
boobiesbeauty behind him. He's got his spear ready (heh) to drive off anyone who tries to take what's his. Because that's the way life is in the Underworld -- protect what's yours or you lose it." He glanced over at Phoebe.Re: Class Discussion: 1/19
"I like this one because I think it gives a unique perspective on the vanity involved in beauty and quite often in love."
Re: Class Discussion: 1/19
"I guess I like this one 'cause it reminds me the most of some of the statues of Aphrodite we have back home, even though it's a little more polished. And she's kind of covering herself up, but in a way that makes it . . . sexier somehow? Because it doesn't look like she's covering herself because she's ashamed. Just being polite, I guess. But yeah. It reminds me of home."

"It's the first one that really looks like a pretty person. Besides, it's money, and how can you go wrong with that? The later paintings are really pretty too. The early stuff isn't my taste."

Even though ducklings totally don't do it for me.I like it, cause... well, I like things that fly. And even though you can't, like, change the oil on a swan, they're cool." Cally says, proudly. "Oh, and erm, I'm not sure that really reflects on Oasis at all. Even though we had swans in one of the ponds one year. That was cool."Re: SIGN IN: 1/19
Re: Class Discussion: 1/19
"I like that one because she's not ashamed or trying to hide the fact that her and her kid are naked there, plus she looks like she could kick some eema if she needed to. And if a chick who can kick your eema while taking care of her kid doesn't relate to where I'm from, I don't know what would."

No. Ducklings? No.We had swans in Delphi. And I'm pretty sure they had 'em in, like, the park in Caprica City, and that's not too far from Oasis, right?"Re: SIGN IN: 1/19

"I picked this one because it's the first image that came to my head when you said 'Venus'. The Birth of Venus is the most stunning picture on the face of the planet, she really is a pretty girl and the nudity obviously wouldn't bother me much!"
