Math Class for Wednesday, January 18 Period 1

Broots sat perched on the desk, his laptop open next to him and a cup of coffee clutched firmly in one hand.

"Hey guys. Mr. Eppes is sick again, so I'm in charge for the day. Cookies are next to the sign in sheet. Sit, chat, I'll pass out the assignment. Sorry guys, I couldn't find a non-empty coffee pot."

"Sudoku puzzles, either the most evil thing ever invented or an awesome logic-based placement puzzle. I'm in the awesome camp, but some of you may disagree. The Sudoku is also known as Number Place here in the US. Your goal is to enter a numeral from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions"), starting with various numerals given in some cells (the "givens"). Each row, column and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Completing the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Also, a good pencil and eraser."

You're sitting in math class, minding your own business, when in walks a Bill Gates kind of guy - the real success story of your school. He's made it big, and now he has a job offer for you.

He doesn't give too many details, mumbles something about the possibility of danger. He's going to need you for 30 days, and you'll have to miss school. (Won't that just be too awful?) And you've got to make sure your passport's current. (Get real, Bill, this ain't Paris). But do you ever sit up at the next thing he says.

You'll have your choice of two payment options:

1 One cent on the first day, two cents on the second day, and double your salary every day thereafter for the thirty days; or

2 Exactly $1,000,000. (That's one million dollars!)

"Pick one option and explain why. Turn in at the end of class to me."

"We're reading the Chaos Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_theory) chapter. Read, discuss, wake up."

Cameron signs in, it's possible that Molly looks more awake than he does.

Molly followed Cam into the classroom. She signed in and took a cookie, looking more awake than she did last week.

Pip signs in, grabs a cookie, and starts munching on it.

Angela chews on her pencil for a moment, pretty sure this is a trick question. She pulls out a sheet of notebook paper and starts doing the math. Around day 19, she gives up and starts rounding things off. But even with the rough math, it looks like she'll be making close to $3 million dollars on the 30th day, and ... a whole bunch of money, with all the days added up.

She writes, "I pick the first choice," on the sheet containing her figuring and hands it in.

Angela signs in and takes a cookie.

Molly took a puzzle with some trepidation. It took her all of class, but she did eventually finish her puzzle.

Cameron starts on one of the puzzles. He might actually like solving it, if he wasn't feeling so braindead right now.

Walter signs in and wants a cigarette, not a cookie.

Walter ~~whose mun can't remember statistics class to save her bloody life~~ settled for doing the math manually and turning in the sheet, opting for payment option number one.

Kiki signs in.

Kiki takes one. Then another...and a third. Then, with an "oh well" shrug, she grabs 3 more. Ever since she had done a few as a subject for someone's psyche project, she'd found them terribly addictive. Who would think counting to 9 over and over could be so much fun?

Victor signs in, takes a cookie, and pretends that it's Walter.

Victor tried out the puzzle. He hadn't done one before, but he tried his hardest, and he thought he did a good job.

Pip takes one. He does eventually finish it, but occasionally get sidetracked doodling in the margins.

Most of the doodles are of naked women.

One track mind.

Broots glanced over at Kiki and grinned. "We could have used you for our entier psych project."

Broots in no way peered at Pip's work before putting in a pile for Mr. Eppes.

"What did you do for your project?" Kiki asks, pausing with her pen hovering over the grid (yes, she does them in pen. Crazy girl!). "I think it was Jessica who asked for Sudoku volunteers when I first tried these, but I could be thinking of the wrong person."

Broots grinned. "Jessica was my partner. I was the guy in the back with a stopwatch"

Kiki cracks up. "Obviously, my observation skills were really poor that day," she laughs. "Or I was just so intent on the puzzle."

Logan stumbled in, grumbled at the lack of coffee and took a cookie.

John signs in and scarfs cookies. mmmmmm breakfast sugaaaar

John knows that the double double double will always reach a higher number than just the flat rate, but it all really depends on if the money's upfront or after the fact.

If the money is up front, flat 1 mil. If the money is after the fact, the Double method.

Grabs a cookie.

Pippi regards the sudoku puzzle much as she may a venomous snake...

Her puzzle is filled with eraser smudges, but she gets it...

Eventually.

"Dude, I'm supposed to jump at this thing for a paltry million dollars?" Logan rolled his eyes. "Okay, let's see what the other option is."

+ $0.04 = $0.07

He scribbled calculations down the page and looked at the final number.

"Now you're starting to talk real money," Logan said, putting down his pencil. He circled the first option and handed in his sheet.

Chloe signs in, thankful that she has her own coffee maker.

Chloe began scribbling on a sheet of paper. Once she realized the salary was going to be more than a million dollars, she circled the first answer and wrote, "Because it's more money!"

Broots wondered whether anyone from his group was going to come in.

"Nah, you weren't really supposed to see me. I was reaaally lurking in the shadows."
