Quantum Physics 225: Monday, Fifth Period

The Doctor looks unhappy this morning, unhappy to the point where he's mainlining coffee and scowling.

"Afternoon. You were supposed to read the synopsis of the historical period for today and come up with an idea for what you'd like to really focus on. You'd best have done it." His eyes imply that he doesn't want to play games. "We'll discuss it. And then, because you now know the importance of the civil rights movement...we're watching part of Eyes on the Prize. Out of respect."

After draining about half the mug, he looks back up. "And for Wednesday, I want you to tell me--who do you think was more effective in achieving civil equity in this period--Martin Luther King, Jr, or Malcolm X? This is a question that's thrown back and forth in academia, and I want you to weigh in. Thoughtfully. Do whatever outside research you need. Maybe start with Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing."

This is what you get when someone makes an American Studies major unhappy.

Jack signs in, and kind of hopes he can hide in the back of the class since he never answered the Doctor's voicemail from last week.

Fat chance that. The Doctor...definitely NOT Ten...focuses his gaze on Jack.

"Mr Harkness. Perhaps YOU'D like to tell us what intrigues you about the 60s, besides the free love movement."

John signs in.

"Sir, I chose the premiere of Star Trek. While I might prefer Star Wars, that doesn't come till the last seventies," John says. "Star Trek was a Gene Roddenberry creation starring the great William Shatner," and here, John pauses to do a bit of a Shatner impression, "and Leonard Nimoy. Star Trek is set far in the future, depicting an almost utopian society. It shows all races, creeds, sexes and cultures uniting as one. Of course, it's not all good and bad guys still do pop up. But, with Kirk and the crew on the case, the bad guys usually lost."

"And just to do something a little more serious," John sas, "I also did some research on the Berlin Wall being built. That project began in 1961 to separate West Berlin and East Germany from each other. It went from basic wire fence to improved wire to concrete wall to Border Wall. Restrictions were set in place for those wanting to cross the wall and those who ignored restrictions were subject to being shot at. Nasty stuff."

"Both of those are good choices, Mr Crichton. Sometimes popular culture has more of an effect than we know. What intrigues you about the Berlin Wall?"

"I'd actually like to study the drug culture. While it was viewed by many at the time and most later as a dangerous and hazardous way of life, the people who lived it thought it gave them insight. Was what they gained worth the risk? And why at that point did it become such a strong movement?"

Jack opens his mouth, closes his mouth, and considers. Then he goes for it (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/515189.html?thread=24220789#t24220789).

"Probably why such they took such great lengths to separate West Berlin and East Germany, sir." John nods. "Border guards are normal but a huge wall seems like overkill so I'd like to learn more about, what I would assume to be, hostility and tension between the two entities."

[[ooc: Just so it's clear? I typed and retyped that announcement trying to make it not sound belittling to MLK. I guess I failed. Sorry.]]

"That may just lead you straight into the Cold War." The Doctor smiles a little at the prospect. "Are you prepared for that? For addressing communism?"

"Good preparation, Jack. ~~Is that why you didn't ring me?~~ Just don't forget that drugs have been seen by many as giving insight, throughout the ages and in many places." He turns to speak to them all. "This is a good example of how everything leads and connects. Unifying forces and concepts throughout time and space."

((It's IC and the Doctor's reacting IC. Not angry at you.))

"I think I am, sir," John answers. "I admit to not knowing a lot about communism myself and I'd like to see how one idea blew up into what communism did become, how it influenced something like a giant, separating wall to be built and why it still exists today in some pockets of the world."

[[ooc: Meep. Okie-doke. I was just confused by the "American Studies Major" bit. On a side note: I love Do the Right Thing. A lot.]]

Sam signed in.

"I'd like to study the effects of the major assinations of the period and their effect on civl rights--Martin Luther King, Jr., President John F. Kennedy, Jr., Senator Robert Kennedy. Why they were killed and what happened to the Civil Rights Movement after their deaths."

"Failing that, I'd like to study the Freedom Riders across the south."

The Doctor nods in approval. "Sounds good, a focus that isn't overly broad."

Sam nodded and made a note of the approved topic. She'd almost suggested ~~poking holes in~~ analyzing the Warren Commission report of the JFK Assassination, but couldn't figure out how to make that relevant to Quantum Physics.
