CJ's Office Hour

From 4th period on, she sits in her office suppressing the urge to pull her hair out and wondering what on Earth possed her to tell Geoff "Sure, I'll do Symposium!

After she's pretty sure she's stepped over that line between sanity and full-on crazy, she takes off to the teacher's lounge.

Veronica knocks on CJ's door somewhere in the middle of 4th period to talk to her about the investigation.

"Hey, Veronica. Come on in. I got some new information for you."

Veronica sits down and pulls out her case notes, a tablet and a pen.

She gives CJ a concerned look. "Um, this is probably none of my business," she says, "but have you talked to Jack lately?"

"Yes. I did." She looks steadily at Veronica, distincly unamused. "I assume you know what it was about."

Opening her desk drawer, she pulls out a file. "I had this faxed from California. I adopted Shane Michelle McCutcheon a couple months ago. Until then she was a ward of the state. She was a chronic runaway and...well, the rest is in there."

With a sigh, Veronica nods. "I found these when I searched Amber House," she tells her, handing her copies of the adoption papers she found.

She hesitates for a moment, but she's Veronica Mars and she's physically incapable of minding her own business. "Look, about Jack, he feels awful about what happened. He was trying really hard not to hurt you and, well, being Jack, he kind of went about it the wrong way."

"I know, Veronica. And I...I overreacted and made a big scene and said the worst things to him. I haven't seen him since...and I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't push, but it's killing me that he hasn't come around."

Turning the adoption papers over in her hands, realization dawns. "She went without these? These are like...she wouldn't just leave these."

"He doesn't want to make you cry again," Veronica tells her softly.

Then she swallows hard. "That's what I thought. I also found this. Is it Shane's?" She hands CJ a baggie with a lock of hair in it.

"He won't make me..." she doesn't finish her statement, instead taking the baggie from Veronica. Silent for a long moment, she looks up and meets her gaze. "It's hers. She gave it to Tara. Which...witch. It meant something I think."

Veronica tilts her head in thought. "I have an idea of how we might be able to find something out," she tells CJ. "Because I had... a friend... check credit card databases and the Virginia police databases and come up empty."

"I'm open to anything Veronica. As long as it takes...as much as it costs. Whatever you need. Just...help me." She speaks softly, trying so hard not to sound like she's begging.

"I'd like to take the lock of hair to Phoebe. One of her powers is premonitions and maybe if she touches Shane's hair, she can get a vision of her. Is that okay?"

She hands the hair back. "Let's pretend I don't know this, because Phoebe's my student and I don't want any weird grade stuff involved, ok? If it doesn't work, I don't want her to think I'll fail her or something."
