Psychology 101 (Monday, 01/09/2006, 3rd Period)

Jenny stood at the front of the classroom. Off to the side, as it was the first day of classes, she had laid out bagels and cream cheese for everyone.

After the students signed in and took their seats, Jenny started today's lecture.

"You're lucky, guys. Today's the easy class. Mostly introductions, plus a little bit about my expectations. Class is discussion-based. That means that your credit comes from participation. Sitting there while everyone else does the work? Does not earn you a good grade."

{{OOC: In other words, posting things like "[character] listens to the discussion around him" or "[character] sits and waits for someone to discuss with" will not earn you your participation credit that day. Jenny's always around to discuss with--and if RL is hurting you, I will accept even one line, as long as it's on the topic of discussion for that day.}}

"Don't forget to sign in every day. I don't see you sign in? You don't get freebie points for attendance, and I think free points for attending class is a pretty good deal. If you ever have questions on the material--or anything else, for that matter--I hold office hours on a pretty regular basis, or you can stop by after class is over."

"We will also be having monthly exams covering all the material learned over that month. Those? Last day of the month that we have class. You can come and check your course grade with me any time. If you're worried about your grade? Extra credit's a possibility. Again, come and talk to me."

"We will be having a final project. This project is worth one-third of your grade, and if you don't turn it in, you will fail the course. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to work on it. Besides, you're getting the project instead of a final exam."

When we begin discussion on the final project, however, there will be a specific due date for that (the last day of the term, of course).}}

"Still looking for a TA. You want the job? Great, come and talk to me to apply."

"Now, onto the easy part. I don't know you guys. Introduce yourselves, and let me know why you signed up for the course."

Jaye signs in, looking tired and wondering if she did everything she was supposed to this morning, such as brushing her teeth and using deodorant.

And because sometimes she's a brat for more than a day in a row...

"Hi, I'm Jaye. Turn-ons include people who aren't stupid, hot guys without shirts, and... Okay, I'm not too picky. Turn-offs will take me three days to list."

"Nice to meet you, Jaye," says Jenny, grinning. First day of class, and the first student to show is the class clown? Good thing she was used to Xander. "Sounds like you're a just a little bit picky there with the turn-offs. So how about psych? You interested in the subject? 'I'm here to fulfill graduation requirements' is an acceptable answer."

Clark signs in and takes a seat in the dead middle of the class, taking out a pencil and paper even though it really isn't necessary to take notes on other people's introductions.

"Um...I'm Clark," Clark says. "I'm from Smallville, I like pie and goats, and I'm in this class because people are interesting." He looks at Jayne in concern. "We're not required to list turn-ons, are we?"

Jenny smiles reassuringly at Clark. "Nope, not a requirement at all," she says quickly, before Jaye can respond. "This should be a good class for you, then. Nice to meet you, Clark."

Krycek signs in, ~~mun hoping nothing weird will happen in Sociology as it's not been posted~~ almost wishing he'd stopped to get more coffee.

"Alex Krycek, I signed up for the course because psychology is an interesting subject." He's still not feeling as awake as he'd like to.

"Sounds like a good plan," says Jenny. She smiles symapthetically at his exhaustion. "Nice to meet you, Alex."

"Ms Calendar?" Elizabeth knocks on the door, holding a slip of paper. "I was just wondering if I could add this class to my schedule?"

"Oh, hi, Elizabeth," says Jenny. "Sure, not a problem! I'd love to have you in the class." She signs the add form and hands it back with a smile. "You didn't miss much today. Everyone was just introducing themselves. I'll e-mail you the course information."

Elizabeth nods. "Cool. Um, also, about magical theory? I don't think the scheduling could have clashed worse for me, but would it still be okay if I come and talk to you at times about it?"

"I'd like that," said Jenny. "You had some very good questions the last time we talked. Or you could sign up for the class as an independent study. I know that at least one other student has expressed an interest ~~two, really, but only one has had a chance to play it out so far~~."

Elizabeth tilted her head curiously. "That could work," she said, thinking about it. "What would it entail? Similar material to the actual course?"

Stark signs in and takes a seat.

"I'm Stark," Stark says with a hesitant smile. "The way minds work is interesting, so I signed up for this. ~~Also, I'm crazy so it's amusing to my slightly evil mun~~."

"Yep, you guessed it," said Jenny. "Though if you had a particular area you wanted to focus in, you could do that as well. You seemed pretty interested in spell creation, languages, and heredity."

Elizabeth nodded. "I've, uh, seen axamples of heredity in action," she explained. "And the languages comes from the fact that I speak five. And a half."

"I like to find out what makes people tick," she shrugs. "Makes it easier to mess with them later."

"Not required, but it's a great ice-breaker," Jaye says seriously.

Kristy signs in and drops into a seat next to Clark, since he looks like the kind of guy prepared for things, and Kristy digs preparedness.

"Hi, I'm Kristy and I'm from Stoneybrook, Connecticut," Kristy says. "I wanna learn more about psych because knowing how people think can really help you get the upper hand in a business situation. And I plan to be in several. Business situations. In life. Later." She glances at Jaye, then mumbles. "And my turn ons include snark and wit."

"Nice to meet you, Stark," said Jenny. ~~Shall we see how evil we can be to Stark, then?~~

"I don't know how much you'll be able to learn about messing around with people in a basic course," says Jenny, who'd had plenty of experience with antisocial students. "You'll have to wait until college for that."

"Nice to meet you, Kristy," said Jenny. "Do you plan on working in someone else's business, or starting your own?"

Aw. A crush. It was kinda cute.

Hm. Jaye's not going to say out loud that she may be totally underestimated. Because she's an underachiever, no, really.

"You have?" asked Jenny, tilting her head and looking at Elizabeth curiously. "That explains that, then. Mind telling me some details? You've got me beat on languages. Which ones do you speak? I grew up bilingual with English and Romany, learned a bunch of Latin for the spellcasting, and some Romanian for yet more spells--and a few summers spent in the old country." She shrugged. "I can translate Sumerian and Sanskrit if I have to, but that requires a heck of a lot of time and more than a few reference texts."

"It was how someone with a specific gene seemed to be coded to something," she said evasively. "I'm not really a scientist, so I'm not sure. As for the languages, my grandmother was Russian, so I learnt that when I was little. Same with French. Then over the years, I've picked up Spanish, German and Farsi. I've studied Latin pretty in depth, and I'm teaching myself Italian at the moment."

"My own." Kristy straighens up in her chair. "Back home I started this baby sitting business that was pretty popular. Kind of a one stop shop for all your baby sitting needs so people didn't have to spend all day calling around town for a sitter." She looks around. "Um... which... is not relevant right now."

"Interesting. And yet slightly confusing," said Jenny. Biology was not her forte. "Not so much with the science here either. Sounds like fun." Between the two of them, they probably equalled the number of languages Rupert knew. "So which language do you like best?"

Elizabeth just nodded, figuring it was best to say nothing about that. At the question, her face softened. "Definitely Russian. It reminds me of my grandmother, and it's the one I feel most comfortable with." She grinned. "I've been known to slip into it when I've been distracted. Besides, it's not exactly that common a language for people to learn, and it's always fun when they don't know what you're saying!"

"Maybe not, but it's interesting," says Jenny. "And today's 'get to know your fellow student' day, so we're gonna be pretty lax on the whole concept. You taking any classes from Ms. Gilmore-Danes? I hear she's got some good ones for business."

"I know exactly what you mean," said Jenny in Romany. She grinned at Liz. "So you want to show up at my office hours on Friday? We'll have a meeting on it then."

Kristy nods. "Yup. Human Resources Management. Which, I suppose will help me manage my human resources. Or something."

"You'll learn a lot in it," says Jenny. "Sounds like you've got a nice plan worked out. Good luck with it."

Elizabeth looked curious as she listened to the unfamiliar words. "Zwei können an das Spiel spielen," she laughed. "Friday's good for me; I've only got the one class, so I'll see you then."
