Classics 201, 1st class

Dream stands before the class, his head held high, dressed in his formal robes. He speaks in a clear, strong voice.

"Hello, and welcome to your first class of the semester. I hope it will be enjoyable for all of you.

Start by reviewing the classroom rules. I would like each of you to sign them at the bottom and turn them in to me. This will serve as our contract for the semester.

Most of you studied with me last term; welcome back. The new student, John Connor, is to be my assistant. Treat him with the respect this role deserves.

Our lecture today will be an overview to refresh your minds about ancient Greek, which was the last tongue we studied last semester. We will spend the rest of the month working on Greek translations and readings.

As always, I will be in my office after class. Creature languages immediately follows this class, but I will be there for the rest of the day."

The administrative business taken care of, Dream delivers his lecture.

"Hey, Professor Dream." Janet takes a drink of her coffee as she grabs a copy of the rules and then signs in. She reads the rules with a bemused look--she takes these as a given anyway--signs the sheet, and turns it in. Then she listens to the lecture. Most of it sounds familiar; last semester wasn't all that long ago, after all.

This is Anders's only class for the day, and he didn't have to wake up early for it. So he's even more upbeat and bouncy than usual as he comes into the classroom, coffee in hand and his books and supplies packed in the brand new backpack slung over his shoulder. The fact that he did even better than he'd expected to in last semester's Classics course is definitely helping to ease his nerves today.

He gives Dream a cheerful wave as he goes to his seat and pulls out a pen and his notebook (properly octagonal, of course), ready to pay attention to the lecture.

Anders is determined to start off the semester on the right foot. He's waiting outside Dream's office after Creature Languages to ask a question.

"Should be fun this semester." Janet thinks a minute about the question. "Verbs," she says. Who doesn't need more work on irregular verbs? "Possibly some more practice speaking the languages. That's an enjoyable part of class."

"Well, I'm all fascinated by the ancient Greek religion now, 'cause of my project and all. I wouldn't mind going into that a little bit more, or maybe you could give me pointers on books about it?"

Anders nods and, shuffling a little bit from one foot to the other, asks, "Well, actually, yeah. I know we just barely started and all, but I was just wondering if you could maybe give me a heads-up on what I should probably pay extra attention to this semester? I know my Latin and Hebrew were kinda shaky . . ."

Connor signs in, reads over the class rules, and sits in his seat to listen to the lecture.

Connor smiles. No, he's not proud. "Thank you. I learned a lot last term and look forward to learning more this term."

Murphy signs in, reads and signs the rules sheet, then takes the seat next to his brother.

Anders nods, glad he stopped and applied for that library card between class and now. "Well, it's not so much that I'm not familiar with the gods and stuff as it is that they've got totally different stories from the ones with the same names back home, you know? So yeah, I guess an anthology or two would be a good idea."

He shrugs. "'M in agreement with Miss Frasier about more practice in speakin' th' languages. Other than that, 'm willin' ta be surprised."

John signs in after reading the rules and sits near Dream's desk away from the door. He wonders if he's supposed to, like, sit in a certain spot, wear a doofy hat, or just help students if they have questions. He's also craving caffeine.

John graciously accepts the coffee. Hey, 5 seconds being a TA and perks? Awesome.

mmmmm...... caffeine....

"I've studied a bit, sir, enough to be familiar with basic vocab and structure."

John turns in his chair after quaffing half the cup, giving the class a once-over, getting a lay of who would be trouble and who would need help.
