Shop Class: [1/9]

As the students enter into the Danger ~~Room~~ Shop, they'll see that it has been transformed into a scrapyard, filled with various mechanical machines, scrap metal etc.

A section of the Junkyard has been put aside for the typical tools you would find in a metal/wood shop.

"Morning Kids. Before we do anything else, we will go over The Rules of the Danger Shop."

After the rules have been gone over, Mac then does Roll Call to make sure everyone is there. Then Mac walks everyone through the safety percautions and techniques to use any of the shop tools.

When that is complete, Mac rolls out a cart that has ground coffee and various types of coffee filters.

Today we are going to build a coffee machine.

To do this you must:
1. Fashion a container and device to boil water
2. Fashion a device to filter water through the coffee grounds
3. Fashion a device to receive the coffee

Notes: There are no Coffee Brewers or Percolators in the Junk Yard. I know. I fixed them. If you find a device that will heat the coffee (hotplate etc), chances are it is broken and you must take the time to fix it. Shop equipment cannot be used as functioning part of the coffee maker. Only to build it.

Sorry, a little more explanation is probably necessary for the newbies." The roll call thing was just for me to provide a link to my class roster.

*How to do an assignment*
Ideally we'll be doing a Junkyard Wars/MacGyver type of deal in class. The idea is that you will be finding something around you to fulfill the requirements of the assignment.

For instance, if we were making a cannon I would probably write something like:

Mac went into the scrap pile and returned with a long thin metal pipe, a tennis ball, some scrap metal, a flange, a pipe end cap, a rubber hose and an old air compressor.

Mac then worked on the air compressor to make sure it was working right and fashioned a connective device between the the rubber hose, the flange and the pipe. He then connected the other end of the rubber hose to the air compressor.

Mac dropped the ball into the pipe and turned on the air compressor until the hose was fully pressurized. He then released the flange and ball went off flying somewhere in the direction of his TA's head.

If you don't have time, or can think up anything creatively you have two choices.

1. Wait until other people comment and get inspired from their idea.
2. Do a hand wave by saying *Attempted Assignment: Passed* or *Attempted Assignment: Failed*
3. Get a partner in class and work on an idea together.

You'll get a higher grade for yourself if you complete the assignment IC whereas you'll get an average grade if you do handwavey thing.

Each teacher has their own way of running classes, but I've seen similar methods being used. If the teach doesn't supply something like this, watch how students respond in the classroom and go from there.

[How did I miss that my roommate's clone was in this class? Oh fuuuuuuuuun! Whee!]

Xander raises his hand, confused. Not by the assignment, though he knows ferfarkall about building a coffee machine. That he'll figure out, but this...

"Er, sir? Why on earth would we make fun of your hair?"

*looks at rules*

"That was back when I had a mullet, son." Mac cocks an eyebrow at Xander. "You don't have a problem with a mullet haircuts do you?"

"Just like your model cars," he mutters to himself even though it's so not and there's stuff all over the place.

First up, heating element. Fine, right. Maybe there's some gasoline and matches around here somewhere. Open flames might not be good though. So, scratch that idea.

Heading into the scrap pile, John's able to dig out a scrap piece of metal, an old off white siphon, and an old oil pan.

John figures the siphon will be good to filter things and the oil pan can catch the coffee. The heating will be a bit more difficult. No matches to heat the underside. A light bulb used as a heating lamp might do. Finally, John decides on something else. He retrieves another oil pan and fills it with boiling water. Then he covers the oild pan with the scrap piece of metal to heat so the metal heats. Then he siphons the dumps water and coffee grounds into the siphon and holds it over the other oil pan he's using to capture the coffee.

The coffee is a really ugly shade of brown.

Mac looks at the coffee and shrugs. The point was to make the coffee. Not necessarily drink it.

"Good job, Crichton."

"There's no taste test involved, right? If so," John says and might grin deviously, "I think the TA should do it."

"Sam? I need you to grade Crichton's assignment!" Mac yells out with a wry grin.

Mac adds a plus to John's grade. "I like the way you think Crichton."

Xander may not be studious, but he's not stupid. He read the rules, because he's all self-preservationy like that.

"Not unless they swing at me first, sir," he answered as he began to look around for anything that could actually be used to heat something up. "The only guy whose hair I'm into making fun of is my ex-roomie's, and that's more because it pisses him off than ~~because it goes straight up in the air in a way that I only wish would look good on me~~ because there's anything actually wrong with it."

"Thank you, sir." John grins down a the mess coffee. "I hope Sam feels the same way about me. I mean, hey, it's coffee. Bound to, at the very least, wake her up."

"Well as long as it isn't mine? I'll let it pass. Need any help with the assignment? Or do you want to puzzle it out for yourself."

[ooc: I have another question. Is there a break room of sorts in the shop? Like, where the teacher would have his own coffee pot? (Don't worry, I don't plan on using anything dealing with an actual coffee maker for my invention) Also, is there a bathroom in the shop? Thanks a lot!]

Yuffie walked into the class room, grumbling something about "stupid cool sounding 8 am classes." She didn't really wake up untill they got their assignment, which made her eyes widened. How were they supposed to do that?

After thinking for a while (and running through the junkyard) Yuffie came back with a few old halogen desk lamps, a slighty cracked glass jar, a banged up old sauce pan, and one of those sand shifters you get in packs of sand toy stuff.

After tapeing up the jar with duct tape, and rushing back out to the junkyard and stealing batteries from several elcetronic devices untill she had enough to work the halogen lights, and grabbing two cinder blocks for god messure, yuffie got to work. She filled the jar with water and heated it to boiling with the lamps. She then postioned the cinder blocks so she could rest the handles of her shifted on them, put her sauce pan underneath, and filled the shifted with the coffee grounds. She then carefully poured her hot water over the coffee grounds.

The coffee was a dark brown, and smelled sorta plasticy. There may have been lumps.

"I think I've got the idea," Xander answered. "Don't think I'll produce anything drinkable, but that's not much of a change from my usual cooking abilities."

"I hate you, Crichton," Sam called from across the room, where she was working on her own machine.

Heh. I've never been so OCD as to make a Shop Class layout! Please don't make me do one now!

Seriously though: No bathroom. No Coffee machine.

When the room looks like a shop room, it has the typical components of a shop class and machines and a desk for Mac to sit at. There's also a console for the room that folds out of the way, but most of the time Mac uses a remote control for imaging equipment.

There is a storeroom that contains scrap metal, wood, and other supplies for shop assignments that do not involve the use of the Danger shop technology.

John grins and jiggles his oil pan o' coffee at Sam. "It might be good! C'mon, show some of that TA fortitude!"

"Well the idea is to make the coffee. Not necessarily drink it. Unless we want to torture the TA. ~~Which I'm thinking might be the next project assignment~~"

Mac might be making chicken noises under his breath. One can't be sure.

Mac fortunately grades on participation and creativity. Though he does furrom his brow at what he thinks might be a lump.

"Good Job Yuffie."
