Music 101 - EXAM - Thursday 12pm

"Welcome to your last class for Music 101 dudes. You don't have class next week because classes finish on Wednesday. The day, not the student. Today is your EXAM. I hope you brought a pen. In case you didn't, there's some on the table in the corner. Please sit down at one of the desks. Before we start, I've got a few things to say.

Tonight is the Band recital, in here at 6pm. Be sure to stop by and support your fellow music dudes. There will be free punch and pie.

Lane Kim, Lily Evans and Rose Tyler - I never got your 'Your Life As A Movie' projects. Leave them with me today or you'll fail that project.

Okay dudes, here's the exam. Remember - no talking and no cheating. I think you can all do it without cheating. You've got the whole class time to do it, and you can leave once you hand in your paper to me. You can turn over your exam paper and start work."

[OOC: This thread will be open until Monday. If your character does not show by then, they will fail the subject. If you are reading this after Monday and have an RL reason for not showing (and are willing to give your character a *suitable* IC reason for not taking the exam), please contact me and we can arrange a supplementary exam.]

Re: Take the Exam

1. Dum Dum Da Da
Dee Dee Doo Doo
Doo Dee Dum Da
Da Dum Dee Do
DaDumDeeDoo!

2. Those lyrics are full of love and compassion for someone special. The only thing is, you don't always have to bring the bigget gift to be the best friend. I mean, diamonds could be in a small box and giving those would make you an awesome friend. But, these are well meaning lyrics about friendship and, possibly, St. Olaf.

3. The soundtrack from Top Gun is one of the most awesome of all time. Danger Zone is one of those 'roll the windows down and sing at the top of your lungs' songs that will never grow old. From that, you slide right into 'Take My Breath Away' which is like the ultimate makeout song. 'Great Balls of Fire' is just another uptempo, upbeat song that pumps you up, which is exactly what the movie does! The Top Gun anthem, that instrumental piece just makes you feel like your flying. And if there's one guy who hasn't tried the 'You've Lost That Lovin Feeling' pick up song, then they're lying.

4. If music disppeared, much sadness would occur. There would be loss of creativity, happiness, and fun. Attached are several pictorial examples: Man who just lost Metallica (http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/5254/560078048pe.jpg). Man who just lost Celine Dion. (http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/1561/2002356990013lz.jpg) Young girl who just lost the Backstreet Boys. (http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4396/ngs3501663xg.jpg)

5. I really think giraffes are musical creatures. I mean, those spots on their skin, they gotta do something, right? Perhaps, if we were to study them, to uncover their secrets, we would find that those spots are actually an organic piano!

EXTRA CREDIT: It was, obviously, the one armed man.

1.doo dee,
doo dee doo,
dum da doo,
dee da dum

2. The song is about the importance of friendship, but I think it kind of misses the whole point since if the person is such a good friend they shouldn't have to buy them a massive present to show it, also it's the thought that counts more than the actual presents, plus the best presents tend to small.

3. Dirty Dancing has an amazingly diverse sondtrack that covers various different genres and themes within the movie. It also shows that Patrick Sawyze is more than just a pretty face and godd actor, as he sings one of the most touching pieces in the whole film 'She's Like The Wind.' As with all good soundtracks, it ends on a high, like the movie itself with 'Time of my Life.' There is nothing bad about the soundtrack at all, well maybe the part during the talent show, but that's not part of the official soundtrack so it doesn't count right?

4. The world would be a terrible and boring place without music, there'd be nothing to dance too, nothing to sing along to. It probably one of the worst things a person could lose. Music means so much, it can convey emotions, cheer someone up, show someone else how they're feeling. I world without music would be very empty.

5. Not, since as far as I know they don't actually make any sort of sound, but maybe they could be taught to play some sort of instrument or be used as backing dancers?

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: The same guy who put the Ram in the Ramalamadingdong I think

1. Doo Doo Doo Doo
Dee Dee Dee Dee
Da Da Da Da
Dum Dum Dum Dum

2. The lyrics are about someone wanting to be a closer friend by buying a huge gift. But friends don't have to buy huge gifts to prove their friendship.

3. Garden State. Great movie, great soundtrack. Coldplay's Don't Panic, Thievery Corporation's Lebanese Blonde are two of my favourite.

4. It would be a very sad place.

5. I think all creatures are musical to some degree.

1. Write a short song using only the words 'dum', 'da', 'dee' and 'doo'.

2. Interpret these lyrics and give a reason for your answer.

Daaaaa-da-da-dun-dun-da-duuuuuun.

I think this points to the eternal metaphysical importance of having friends who're there for you, and how much that can mean to people.

3. Pick a movie of your choice and discuss its soundtrack (either the official one or the music in the movie). Point out what was hot and what was not.

"My heart will go on" soundtrack for Titanic, because i'm a very big fan of both Celine and the Titanic. What was hot: Celine's hair, i wonder what kind of conditioner she uses. What was not: The fact that the Titanic sunk. I didn't expect that. Don't let go Jack, don't let go!!!!!11!!

4. What do you think would happen to the world if music disappeared? Explain your answer. [extra credit: use pictures] Another Big Bang, but a very psychedelic one: like this (http://images.google.nl/imgres?imgurl=http://www.fractalus.com/kerry/gallery5/bang.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.fractalus.com/kerry/gallery5/bang.html&h=600&w=750&sz=190&tbnid=YDu74TnInJEJ:&tbnh=112&tbnw=140&hl=nl&start=5&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbig%2Bbang%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Dnl%26lr%3D). But that's just a hypothesis, of course.

5. Giraffes. Musical creatures or not? Why?

Yes, i assume they can headbang very well with those long necks. Rawk on! Metal will never die! \m/

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp?

I did. Out of jealousy. And then i planned on returning it 'cause i felt guilty, but then i lost it. And then i thought, well feck it, and went on with my life :)

1. Write a short song using only the words 'dum', 'da', 'dee' and 'doo'.

Da da da dum
Dum dee dee doo
Dum dee dee diddle aye day doo dee dee doo.

{d.s. al coda}

2. Interpret these lyrics and give a reason for your answer.

This is clearly a song about someone who doesn't actually like his friend that much anymore, but is too much of a chickenshit to say so, so instead he just doesn't show up for their parties, and sends expensive gifts out of guilt.

3. Pick a movie of your choice and discuss its soundtrack

I'm still pretty much stuck on the crime of there being no official soundtrack for Ferris Bueuller's Day Off. I mean, WTF hell, man? Danke Schoen? Twist and Shout? The Star Wars Battles theme? There could not have been a more awesomely bizarre combination of music in the world - the fact that it was all set to a movie about a guy ditching class in a most, um. Triumphant manner, is just icing on the musical cake. For shame, John Hughes. For shame.

4. What do you think would happen to the world if music disappeared?

All classes would look like this. All children would look like this, and Jeopardy would have no tension at all during Final Jeopardy, because who cares if they answer the question right - it's the seconds ticking down as they slowly run out of time and make funny faces as the music plays that makes the show so entertaining. All in all, not a pretty world.

5. Giraffes. Musical creatures or not? Why?

Well, they don't sing, I think - something about their voicebox not working right because their necks are so long - but I bet they could play a mean pair of bongos!

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp?

Not sure -- Rory Gilmore? I hear everything's her fault, but that could be just a rumor.

Being a friend is most important to this person but they don't want to over do it too much, since that would be crazy. Friends just love giving their good friends gifts, even if they're easy, simple but still full of love.

3. Pick a movie of your choice and discuss its soundtrack (either the official one or the music in the movie). Point out what was hot and what was not.

The soundtrack of 'War of the Worlds' was just amazing, and each song held it's own vibrant yet dark air. The composer did such a good job matching up songs to the different scenes in the movie, that each movie watcher felt his/her emotions wrapped up with the characters in the specific scenes, such as "Ray and Rachel"; the song is about Father and Daughter making their survival among the aliens that are intent on killing them all off.

What was hot: Tom Cruise The music, in general. What was not: Them damn aliens!

4. What do you think would happen to the world if music disappeared? Explain your answer. [extra credit: use pictures] The world without music?

We would end up like him (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v432/sensen1/asteroid/Rosebud/4419.jpg) [the one on the right, mind you]. Music has always been a form of expression and without it some of us would be as retarded as a rock.

5. Giraffes. Musical creatures or not? Why?

I guess they could be? All animals make their own distinct sounds, so it wouldn't be impossible.

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp? I say, the musical giraffes!

Those totally mean that people should be cool, and throw parties, and give big gifts to each other. Cause it'd make everyone happier and stuff.

3. Pick a movie of your choice and discuss its soundtrack (either the official one or the music in the movie). Point out what was hot and what was not.

So, like, there's this movie called "Mr. Holland's Opus", right? And it's all about the music, and really, there isn't a bad thing about it. The big song, that Mr. Holland supposedly writes and stuff? It's really cool. Like, really really totally awesome.

4. What do you think would happen to the world if music disappeared? Explain your answer. [extra credit: use pictures]

Everyone would be sad, and wouldn't be able to sing for joy. Which would be very bad. I wouldn't want that to happen to me, you know? Music is, like, key to happiness.

5. Giraffes. Musical creatures or not? Why?

Yes. Because.

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp?

The same people who put the cream filling in twinkies?

1. Barbossa remembered thinking the song that Crichton had played on his drum at the pageant had been pretty cool. He added a little more onto it.

Dum DUM da DUM dum Da DUM dum DA DUM
DUM dum DA dum DUM da dum DUM da duuuum.

And then decided it needed something a little cheerier at the end:

Dee DEE doodee dum. *clang*

2. This person be showin' how much they like someone by bringin' 'em a massive present. I be likin' their style.

3. Top Gun be havin', in general, a killer soundtrack, though it be a bit heavy on Kenny Loggins fer me own personal taste. "Take Me Breath Away" be lovely and "Danger Zone" be havin' most righteous guitar work.

4. Thar would be tears, 'n empty bars (http://www.bhalu.com/naveen/nola-00/images/empty-bar.jpg). And Lorne would be goin' broke. It would be a terrible, terrible-type place t' be.

5. I be not seein' why they couldn't be. Monkeys dance, after all. I be not suprised t'learn that giraffes could play a mean slide whistle.

6. I be not knowin', but I say we swing 'em from the yardarm.

1. Da da da dum
Da da da dum da
Doo da da dee dum

2. Someone likes the person throwing the party a lot. Or owes them a lot of money.

3. Star Battles, the good part is that it's rousing, and emotional. The bad is that it needs more banthabell.

4. It would be a very dull and boring place. And (http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/displayimage.php?album=201&pos=142) people (http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/displayimage.php?album=201&pos=143) would (http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/displayimage.php?album=201&pos=150) dance (http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/displayimage.php?album=201&pos=120) funny. (http://www.screencap-paradise.com/caps/displayimage.php?album=201&pos=134)

5. Giraffes? Giraffes! Yes. Simply because they are rocking creatures.

Extra Credit:

A thief. A good one by the sounds of it. Possibly even Autolycus, the King of Thieves

Re: Take the Exam

[identity profile] sharon-valerii.livejournal.com 2005-12-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
As a Cylon high school student, one is always generally prepared. Sharon had stopped and gotten a twinkie on her way into class. She was pleased to see it was allowed. She also had a pen.

Sharon sat down at a desk, and poked at the twinkie she'd picked up. It was... spongey. She took a piece and ate it. The taste wasn't bad, so she took another piece. Then she settled down and began taking the exam, trying not to hum randomly under her breath.

1. da-da-da-dum-dum-da-dee-dee
da-da-da-dum-doo-doo

2. My best friend is inviting the entire school to a party, but I'm still getting her the best present ever. Male strippers a viper Not that I know what it is. I could be wrong, of course. They could be code explaining that the best way to take over a planet is surprise.

You could build a huge birthday cake and hide a bomb in it.

Er, but that's overly violent.

I guess the reason for my answer is that it seems kind of obvious.

3. Strange Days. I watched this the other night, and was... disturbed at the idea of a government so corrupt.

I found the music to be oddly effective, and quite remeniscent of that strung-out feeling that nothing will ever change, everything will remain the same and there's just more drudgery to be had. No hope.

Until the end. And then the Peter Gabriel/Deep Forest track just washed away the previous hopelessness.

It was groovy stuff, all the same. Although, I really didn't like the tracks that, er, that redheaded chick sang. She wasn't very effective, as a performer, and the lyrics just bored me stiff. I suppose I'd call them lame. Totally.

4. Music is... Music is an outlet for the human mind, a way of expressing itself some way other than with thought. I think without this outlet, this basic requirement for living, the world would fall into chaos.

It would probably look something like this, after a while.

Image

Except with more explosions. And possibly, kittens.

5. I have no idea.
Musical. Everyone seems to want to say their name, and sing their praises to the sky.

Subject: Music 101
Teacher: Ted 'Theodore' Logan
Date: Thursday, December 15, 2005
Name: Lily Evans

1. Write a short song using only the words 'dum', 'da', 'dee' and 'doo'.
Doo-doo, doo-dee-doo
Dum-dum, da-da-da
Dee-da, dee-da, dee-da-dum
Dum-dum, doo-dee-doo

2. Interpret these lyrics and give a reason for your answer.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say 'thank you for being a friend'
Daaaaa-da-da-dun-dun-da-duuuuuun.

It appears that the singer is talking about being a really good friend of the person to whom they are singing. Not only would they attend a party thrown by the other person, but they would also buy them a gift and it would be the biggest gift there, as a symbol of how much they care. Also, the singer clearly values the friendship of the other person, as they are thanking them for being a friend.

3. Pick a movie of your choice and discuss its soundtrack.
I recently watched Titanic with my boyfriend, and the music in that movie was decent - a lot of classical scored music in the background, and then there was this woman with a really high shreaking voice - Celine something-or-other, and she sang a song about her Heart Going On which was supposed to mean love transcends death, I think, but I lost the meaning because the voice really kind of annoyed me, so I'm not sure that soundtrack achieved its intended purpose.

4. What do you think would happen to the world if music disappeared? Explain your answer.
The world would be a very boring place without music. It would be very flat and unemotional - music at its best is a reflection of humanity, a way for us to gain a deeper understanding of who we are and how we feel. Without that... it would be awful.

5. Giraffes. Musical creatures or not? Why?
Umm, I've never heard a giraffe making music, so no.

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp?
Must have been The Hamburgler! I don't really know, sir, but I can help you look for it if you'd like.

Name: Lane Kim

1. Write a short song using only the words 'dum', 'da', 'dee' and 'doo'.
Dum. Dum. Dum. Dum-da-
Dum. Dum. Dum. Dum-da-
Doo. Doo. Doo. Doo-dum-
Dee. Dee. Dum.

2. Interpret these lyrics and give a reason for your answer.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say 'thank you for being a friend'
Daaaaa-da-da-dun-dun-da-duuuuuun.

Why are you asking us about the Golden Girls Theme Song, Professor Ted? It's a show about these four cranky old ladies, and don't get me wrong - it's like, one of my secret addictions, because I just can't get enough of Dorothy and Sophia at each others' throats, and Blanche is all slutty, and Rose! Omg! Rose is just oblivious to everything and it's hilarious. Sheer comic brilliance. But, um... don't tell anyone, because that would be ambarrassing if everyone knew. You won't tell anyone right? Please? Anyway, umm, the song represents the friendship between the old ladies because even though they're very different people, they still love each other underneath it all.

3. Pick a movie of your choice and discuss its soundtrack.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy had some superbly orchestrated music in it - a great combination of instrumental music with the occasional choral "aaaahhhhhh" background, and then a few vocal songs also, including Billy Boyd singing, which was definitely hot.

4. What do you think would happen to the world if music disappeared? Explain your answer.
The world would suck without music. I would have no passion or goal in life and I would be stuck reading the Bible all the time like my mother wants anyway. Also, like, all these famous rock stars would just go crazy and have no means of supporting themselves after their drug money is gone, because they could no longer sing high school proms or state fairs or bar/bat mitzvahs to bring in the cash. So they'd all be like, bums for real.

5. Giraffes. Musical creatures or not? Why?
Yes. I think a lot of people would just assume that they couldn't be musical because they're, you know, giraffes. But nature and animal sounds have been used in all sorts of relaxation and meditation crap music. Also, the pounding of giraffe feet could be very rhythmic when walking or running, so that's like percussion - getting a good beat going, you know?

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION: Who took the Bomp from the Bompalompalomp?
Well, it's from a song called "Deceptacon" by this trio of... girls who like girls, and it had this weird dance in the video. *Lane draws little stick people going through the motions of the dance: low res (http://www.letigreworld.com/sweepstakes/html_site/song/deceptacon/deceptaconvidlow.html)/high res (http://www.letigreworld.com/sweepstakes/html_site/song/deceptacon/deceptaconvideo.html)* Then this group called LCD Soundsystem did a remix of it, I think. Yeah, I'm pretty sure.

And, like the lyrics are kind of ripped off from some cheesy old song (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/459473.html?view=21599953#t21599953) by Barry Mann.

1. Da dum dee dum doo da...
doo da dee da...
Dum dee da dum doo-da-dee-da,
Dee dum da dum.

2. Interpret these lyrics and give a reason for your answer.

Obviously, this person is attempting to compensate for something. Perhaps they are lacking in personality, and attempt to make up for it with a show of extravagant gifts.

3. Amadeus. Every piece on the soundtrack is a composition of Mozart's, who was writing music at an age vhen most of us were still chewing on vooden blocks.

4. It would be a terribly silent and boring place.

5. I should think all creatures have some musical capacity. However, having never meet or seen a giraffe, I cannot say for sure.
