[There is a honking sound from outside her door, followed by a sniffle, and a hoarse voice.] CJ?

Yeah, what? [She looks up from her laptop, clearly flustered.]

Methos knocks on the door. "Hello?"

I've got some information. [He gestures with his non-Kleenex hand, which is holding a sheaf of printouts.] How have you been?

Veronica knocks on Professor's Cregg's door.

"You wanted to see me?" she asks, wondering if this is about her performance at Caritas again.

[Tersely] I've been better, Ten. What have you got?

[Without looking up] Come.

Veronica. Good. I need your help. You used to investigate stuff, right? Isn't that what you said? [She's nearly trembling she's so keyed up. She rises and walks to Veronica, then turns back to her desk sharply.]

Looks like magnetic resonance is what they're using. I think. I'd need to see the actual device to be certain, if we can get our hands on one...did they give one to Ms Mal Doran? If not, I could probably modify an MRI to do the same thing.

[Methos frowns at the tense tone in her voice.] Is something wrong?

((And before you ask--this is being borrowed from Men in Black II and extrapolated upon. Anyone with any problems should comment, namely Jack-mun, if this is an issue.))

"Professor Cregg, are you okay?" Veronica asks, wondering if she should offer some gesture of comfort. "And yeah, I've investigated some stuff. My dad's a PI."

[She stares at him, blinking] I'm working on even finding Vala. Parker gave me her room number. I'd rather not accost her there, but if it's not going to work any other way, I'll go on the offensive. You need the thingy. Got it. I'll get it...swear.

Good, because I do need the...thingy. I'm assuming it's small enough to be carried around. I did hear tell that she's about (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/318462.html), people were talking about cookies and the name 'Vala' came up.

((FYI for anyone watching and upset, I'm not omnipresent. This conversation takes place around noon. Ten didn't even get out of bed today until 11.))

No...I'm really not, Veronica. But if you can help I'll be better. OK, this shouldn't be hard. I need to find Vala Mal Doran. She's a student, and I need to talk to her as soon as possible. Her boyfriend is in room 226, but I don't want to be all...aggressive. Can you find me her phone number? Be smooth about it?

Ten, I seriously doubt if she has it, she's carrying it around on her girl scout rounds. But I'll find it. Just...let me breathe.

Uh, Adam. Yeah...come in. I'm sorry. I'm...under a lot of pressure.

"Cam lives right next door to me and I know Vala fairly well. We've hung out a few times. I'm sure I have her number somewhere."

She gives CJ a concerned look. "What's going on?"

[[That is quite acceptable. *snickers*]]

[He comes in and shuts the door.] Is there anything I can do to help?

[Ten nods and blows his nose.] Right. I'm going home, call me whenever, all right, love?

Um...I don't know. Jack's had his memory erased. The whole term, just gone. [Her voice begins to shake.] We're trying to figure out how to get him back.

[She sighs] Veronica, I'd love to tell you. But...I don't want to put you in any danger. Just find me her number. Please.

I will. I've got a few things going on. I'll have her by tonight. If I have to gett Rover involved...I'll have her by tonight.

[Methos opens his mouth, realizes that he has no idea what to say, and closes his mouth. After a moment of thought, he said:] It's like someone kidnapped him, isn't it?

[She closes her eyes and nods, swallowing hard.] I don't...[Taking a deep breath, she pushes away the tears and the weakness.] I haven't got time to cry about this, Adam. Someone took everything from him. I'm going to get it back. Ten thinks he knows how to reverse it. I just need time, and I don't have any.

"No problem. I have to go to the newspaper meeting, but I'll see what I can find as soon as I get back to the dorms, okay?"

I understand. [He touches her hand briefly.] Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

Time is of the essence, hon. As soon as humanly possible. You've got my number, call me when you've got it, ok?

"Sure thing." She paused. "And if there's anything else I can do to help, please let me know. You were there for me when I needed you and I'd be glad to return the favor."

[She turns her hand over, gripping his.] Be here? If this doesn't work...I don't know...[her voice starts to shake again] God, I do not have time to break down over this.

You're doing it now, hon. I trust you to keep this quiet, too. Get me?

"Sure thing."

Then don't. [His squeezing her hand belies his brisk tone.] I'm available to be the brute force of the operation, should you need someone to sit on Jack. And I'm here. Always. Do you want me to leave you to your planning?

I'm stuck until I find Vala. I've been looking at things online. Brain stuff, mostly. All it's giving me is trauma from accidents and diseases. You know that this isn't anything that simple. [Standing she wraps her arms around him, relaxing for a moment and laughs lightly] Brute force. I like that.

[He hugs her tightly.] Usually the best way to approach a situation is with a great deal of delicacy. But sometimes... knocking it down and punching its lights out is useful.

Well, if I find something to punch, I think you'll be second or third on the list. [She rests her head on his shoulder.] This is good. Since Ten told me they might come after me too, this is the safest I've felt.

[His arms tighten around her a bit convulsively.] You know who did this to Jack? And they might be after you? What exactly is going on? I figured it was a gremlin bite or cafeteria food or something.?

No, we think it's the people I seized guardianship from. Ten says they're...dangerous. They consider Jack an investment. A commodity. Property. [She leans into him tighter, tightening her hold as well.]

I love you. Be safe. [He has that determined look on his face again as he leaves.]

[Methos says something under his breath that doesn't sound terribly complimentary.] Charming. Now *I* want to beat them up. [He sighs and rubs the back of her neck.] I came by to give you your present. I don't know if you want to think about that now, though.

Present for what? [She leans back a bit to look at him.] I can't think of a better time.

[Methos reaches into his pocket.] I believe the requirements were big, princess-cut, and diamond. [He puts the box in her hand. It contains these (http://rhiannon.dreamhost.com/lj/fh/diamondearrings.jpg).]

Oh. My God. Adam...[She stares at them, barely breathing.] They're...gorgeous. I really didn't...I was just giving Parker ammo...[She looks into his eyes, all worry gone from her face for the moment.] Thank you.

Never, ever give Parker amno. That's like carrying coals to Newcastle. [He smiles softly at her.] I like giving you things. You enjoy them. I enjoy watching you enjoy them.

I love you, Adam. [She tips her chin up, kissing him softly.] You've made everything better by just being here, you know that?

I'm glad. I love you, too. [He kisses her back, and holds her.]

[After an unbelievably long time of just...being held, she pulls back. I need to get back to work, Adam. [She begins to take her earrings out, to replace them with his gift.] I'll call you to snatch Jack if needs be.
