Journalism Class - Thursday December 1

Spider's standing in front of his desk wearing a santa hat this morning and does not look at all pleased by it. The cat is nowhere to be seen. "Good morning class," he greets them, two shades short of an actual grumble. "This morning I want to hear a discussion on whether or not I should offer Journalism 101 next term. Due to having to separate the classes and having to have two class meetings a week, I'm going to be making the classwork mandatory and the homework a bit more interesting."

Sighing, he sat on his desk. "Photojournalism students will be having an amusing time of it, but it's time they got to do more than just wander around with you lot and take pictures. There's far more to Photojournalism than that, so they'll be doing journalism classwork AND a complete project for the term involving real photojournalism." He paused. "In case you're wondering... In case you're wondering, I'm lobbying with Dean Bristow to make Advanced Journalism an option to take several times for accruing credit with a cap of three terms. Photojournalism also, on the basis that it takes longer to give a student a solid journalistic background than it does to teach them a few of the basics. All other journalism classes (said basics) will remain on a term basis only. Let me emphasize that I am still in negotiation and this is by no means a decided thing."

He raised a finger. "I am accepting limited enrollment in Advanced Journalism and Photojournalism this next term as it is the second term of the year. I am planning on offering 201 this coming term and 301 the last term, but whether or not to take 101 next term and then offer 201 the term after is something I wish to hear your opinions on today before I submit any further class applications to the Dean."

"I didn't know we were on a trimester system," Angela says. "I guess there goes my summer vacation."

She twirls her pen, thinking. "As for what to offer next term? I'm actually really interested in trying photojournalism. I didn't take 101, so I'm not really the person to ask about whether it should be offered next term. It might be good for the people who didn't take journalism at all, though."

"I think perhaps you should offer 101 next term, because some students might not have had a chance to take it this term." Rogue shrugs. "Maybe next year you can adjust it."

"It might depend on how many brand new students we get, second semester?" Xander offers. "I dunno if kids that were here this semester are gonna want to take an intro class in the spring when most people are taking more advanced ones, but what about the transfers?"

"Maybe offer Journalism 101 as a subsection of another class? Say, instead of Journalism 101, use the basic parameters of that class as an introduction to Journalism 201? So new students get an introducation to journalism but all semester is not spent on that introduction of sorts."

"Maybe you could see how many students who are here now would like to take 101, and then sort of guesstimate how many might be interested if we get new or transfer students," Chloe says. "I would personally love to see a 101 class, if only to try to gather more minions draw more people into working for the newspaper, who might not have been able to do it this term."

"I'm gonna agree with the majority of the class and say that a poll is a good idea. New students can and probably will throw everything for a loop for a bit, but there were also students who didn't get to take 101 this semsester for a variety of reasons, most commonly probably being time-clashes with another class."

"We think it'd be a good idea for 101 to be offered, if for nothing else so that the teachers could get used to your method of teaching. However," she points out, "You have two TA's who will have been in your classes long enough to learn your methods. Why not make Journ101 a class and have one of them teach it for you? They could even switch off days." She chews her lip, "Are there prereq's for Advanced Journalism? The classes all kind of got lumped together this term, due to probably the small individual class sizes, but.. if Combat Journalism's going away, we'd like to have something else to sign up for."

"I think that if people want to be taught, then they should be taught."

Veronica has no opinion as she is a senior and only has one term left and will likely not take Journalism again.

Having recovered a bit from speech, D'anna sips her coffee. "Perhaps you could open it to new comers and those who have been here all this term but that have not taken a course with you yet? Then, if there is a massive disappearance, maybe offer those left standing a seat in the 201 course?"

Logan quirked his head at the Santa hat. "Maybe you could offer only 201 and advanced sessions, but offer a way for transfer students to take 201? So new students still have a journalism option."
