Language Classes, 11/29

Dream appears relatively cheerful today. The room seems a little bigger and sunnier, and the juice and pastries he set out might be especially delicious.

Languages of Europe: We have a quiz on conjugation of regular -er verbs today. In addition, we're going to discuss regular -ir verbs. The verb form that ends in -ir is called the infinitive (in English, the infinitive is the verb preceded by the word "to"). -ir is the infinitive ending. The verb without the -ir is called the stem or radical.

To conjugate an -ir verb, remove the infinitive ending and then add the appropriate endings, as follows:
je -is; tu -is; il -it; nous -issons; vous -issez; ils -issent. For example, choisir -- to choose -- is conjugated je choisis, tu choisis, il choisit, nous choisissons, vous choisissez, ils choisissent.

Cat, when you're ready?

DReam is in his office. Enter.

*Signs in and waits for the Cat.*

Cat dances into the classroom, he's holding 2 bouquets of flowers, as he's heard there are females in the class.

He stands in front of the class and checks his reflection.

"Right then buddies let me tell you about my friend Cloister the Stupid, the God of the cat people! He taught us about our holy mother Frankenstein who had a virgin birth and so began the cat people, he also told us that heaven is a hotdog and doughnut diner where everyone would wear the sacred cardboard hat. It was these hats that lead the cat people into a holy war, over whether these hats should be red or blue, the race was divided by this war and both sides set off in search of our sacred land Fuchal. Only the sick and lame remained on board the sacred vessel Red Dwarf and so they were the only ones to survive."

He coughs and hopes the class won't realise that means his parents were a cripple and a jellybrain.

"Anyway as it turned out the hats should have been green, so they all died for nothing. Cloister also taught us that..." he looks around in case someone hears, "it is a sin to be cool!" he smirks, "so I guess I'm going to hell right buddies?"

He thinks for a few momnets trying to remember if he's forgotten anything important.
"Oh yeah and it turned out Cloister the Stupid was really my buddy the monkey, Lister, cool huh? I lived with the God of the Cat People! So...any questions?"

*signs in*

Sir, due to some...concerns about my recent, er, shapeshifting, I would prefer to avoid turning into a cat unless absolutely necessary?

*pop*

*huffy sigh* Mrawr.

Dream is concerned.

//This makes you the third student in this class to involuntarily suffer time as a cat.

I think transformations are suspended for the remainder of term. I don't know why the magic is going awry, but if it is...//

Paige signs in and listens to The Cat, trying to figure out if he's wearing that suit for a bet and why he keeps winking at her.

*Hamlet signs in. He takes the quiz and does fairly well, given how simple regular -er verbs are to conjugate. He takes notes on conjugating regular -ir words, and makes a note to buy a Bescherelle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bescherelle) for when they get into the irregular ones.*

Dream listens to the story with his arms folded, nodding. "Why donuts?" he asks.

Cat shrugs, "he never said, if you'd known him you'd have thought he'd have gone for a curry house, but no, hotdogs and donuts it was."

Michael blinks at the Cat in some disbelief, but listens politely nonetheless.

Parker signs in, does well on the quiz, then goes on to conjugate -ir verbs, trying to improve her accent.

Piper signs in and does well on the quiz. She then conjugates the verbs.

Jack approaches the door to Dream's classroom.

"Knock knock?"

"Hello," Dream says. "Wait a moment. I will get together your folder."

He flips through some papers on his desk and emerges with a thick folder of work. "According to my records, you were last in class (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/tag/languages) on October 26. Luckily, most of your lessons are contained in Elementary Greek. (http://www.theology.edu/greek01.htm) Read chapters one through eight and do the exercises at the end of each chapter. You should be caught up with your classmates within -- oh, let us say two weeks."

"Is there anything more I can explain?"

Alanna came in, Faithful in her arms. "You wanted to see me sir?"

Dream gives a slight smile. "Hello, Alanna. Hello -- I haven't caught your name, Cat."

"Thank you for coming. Sit down, if you wish."

"Faithful." Alanna and Faithful replied at the same time. Alanna smiled and sat down. "Thank you sir. Is there something I can help you with?"

((Comment notifs? What comment notifs? *sigh*))

"Possibly," Dream says, addressibng the cat and Alanna equally. "A hamster -- a blonde-and-white-one -- bit Cameron Mitchell yesterday. Today, he is a puppy. Our concern is that the hamster is likely enchanted, and possibly in danger. As a cat who speaks English, and the head of security, I wonder whether you two could help in our efforts to find and recover the hamster, and break the spell if possible."

This is quite a long speech, for Dream. It is a tribute to his considerable personal dignity and experience with many odd things that he says this as though he were asking Alanna for the most ordinary favor in the world.

Faithful stretched in Alanna's lap. "I've seen the hamster, I left it in the common room the other day. I thought it might be someone's pet and it would get claimed." He shook himself off. "I'll find it again, hopefully. ~~And get in contact with the mun~~."

Alanna waited for Faithful to finish, absent mindedly petting him. "I can help look for the hamster, however, I'm afraid I'm useless for human transfiguration. Unless you'd like me to turn her into a log or something." She bit down on her lip. "I'll see if I can find someone to turn her back."

"Thank you both. And Faithful, make sure the other cats know she is not a toy or food? I fear my message over the PA today was unclear."

Faithful flicked his tail at Alanna's nose making the girl bat it away. "Min knows not to. Hopefully the other cats will pick up that the hamster is odd looking as well." Alanna tried very hard not to pull her cat's tail down and out of her face. "Anything else sir? How is Lockheed?"

"Min?" Dream looks momentarily confused. "Lockheed has chosen to live with Professor The Tick. I have not visited with them, but it seems he is doing well."

"And that should be everything."

Archie signs in and acquits himself fairly well on the quiz on -er verbs. When it comes to the -ir verbs, though, he seems to have a little bit of trouble getting the second and third person plural forms straight.

Archie slips in and lays a sheaf of papers down on Dream's desk.

"Sir, here are all the makeup exercises I was assigned to do. I would also like to apologize, as I gave my word that I would be ready to take the midterm on the twenty-fourth of the month but forgot that it would be a holiday. However, this Thursday I will be available to do so."

Dream flips through the papers; everything seems to be in order, though he can spot a few minor mistakes.

"Thank you. I also forgot about the holiday," he says. "This Thursday will be fine."

Lisa aces the quiz, and then gets to work on the assignment.

"No problem." Jack barely restrains himself from sitting on the desk. He settles for leaning against it instead.

"Only two weeks? Wow. Lucky me. Thanks sir."

[Mun has found the post again!]

"I'm glad to aid in your good fortune," Dream says dryly. "I will see you in class tomorrow, Jack."

"Tomorrow. Got it."
