Language Classes, 11/22

There are juice and cookies on a table at the front of the room,

Hello.

Languages of Europe: Turn in your conjugation exercises.

In honor of Thanksgiving, we're going to spend today learning the French vocabulary for gratitude. I am sure you all have much to be thankful for.

Cat: Mr. McCoy has been called home, which shrinks our class size to three. I hope we lose no more students before the end of term.

I am passing out a poem about cats for you to read and discuss. It was written by one
Felix Catus, is your taxonomic nomenclature,
an endothermic quadruped carnivorous by nature?
Your visual, olfactory and auditory senses
contribute to your hunting skills, and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
a singular development of cat communications
that obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
for a rhythmic stroking of your fur, to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
you would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aide in locomotion,
it often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behaviour you display
connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Discuss how Data's observations line up with your own about being and relating to cats.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday; I will see you on the 29th, when a guest speaker should join us.

I find the bit about cats not being sentient I little offensive, the writer's obviously never been a cat themselves have they?

Well, it's technically very good, if artistically a bit *ahem* spotty. He recognizes that the cat has very complex behavior, though the claim of nonsentience is a bit troubling--but then, most people think that about cats, don' they?

Parker hands in her conjugations of "obeir" and "abeyar" and then adds, "Merci beaucoup for everything this semester, Professor. I hope you have a good holiday."

Rogue hands in her homework. She did a little better than average, but not exceptional. She pays attention in class.

6, having been too busy pining for Wednesday, neglected to his homework. He has, however, mastered every conceivable iteration of the word "freedom."
