Cyborg Theory - Compassion

Eighth looks pale and interesting and is less animated than usual. As the class files into her classroom, she looks up now and then from the endless equations she’s working out on a large sheet of paper.

Once the class is settled, she looks up at them.

Greetings, class. I hope you all had a pleasant weekend -- her eyes linger on Samantha’s face before continuing -- and are now rested for this week of classes and the usual hijinks and tomfoolery you students revel in -- she gives a small smile to Crichton who is passing a note to Adama..

Last week we discussed the nature of evil and the cyborg/android system.

Today we will discuss both compassion and love.

Eighth turns on the powerpoint and points to the painting now appearing against the wall. In Greek mythology, legends tell of the artist Pygmalion who built a statue of the most beautiful woman he could imagine, carving her with grace and dexterity of a true artist. The resulting statue, which he called Galatea, was so beautiful that he feel in love with his creation. In their wisdom or folly, the gods of love brought Galatea to life so that she could be his wife, art realized in true human form. The legend ends there, no further details on the life lived by this creature who inhabited a false human shell and her relationship with the besotted Pygmalion. Who knows how the two carried out the rest of their days? The theme, however, of the story is the strength of Pygmalion’s love for that which is not truly human, a creature shaped by his own hands.

Eighth falters a little and then continues.

My second example is of J.F. Sebastian in the film Blade Runner and his both sexual interest and compassion for the replicant Pris. She shows the clip from the film and then turns the lights back on. As you see, two robotic individuals are manipulating a human to feel compassion for them – however the fact remains that compassion was achieved.

For my third example, I want you to close your eyes and concentrate on the essence that is you – stop laughing, Mr. Crichton – concentrate on all and everything that is your self, personality and soul. Now picture all of that downloaded into a shell of a body, very similar to the body you inhabit right at this moment. Now picture your self, your identity downloaded into something as asinine as a toaster or an ice cream truck.

And tell me how you would feel if a human being expressed love or compassion for you, despite your cyborgian state, and how it would feel if you were shunned by those you loved and cared for most of all because you were no longer human like them, regardless if the transfer caused you to be an evil megalomaniac—

Eighth stops for a moment, and catches her breath and does not look at Sam.

I, um… my point is – is it foolish to fall in love with that with is not 100% human? Is it foolish to feel compassion for them in their situation?

I open the class up to discussion.

Lee peeks at his note.

Hey Lee, I need your help making toast. My toaster keeps puttering out and my toast is lonely. J

He scribbles back.

I can't have you competing with me on l33+ toast making skillz! -L

Sam glares at Eighth and crosses her arms over her chest. "I can't imagine why you'd think I have anything useful to contribute on this particular subject, ma'am."

"I mean, aside from having been downloaded into a computer, an android, and a cyborg, that is. But that's not common knowledge and I'm not going to make it so."

"Hypothetically speaking, however, if that were to happen to me, I believe that my natural instinct would be to trust a creature like that. Until it chose to betray that trust and destroy everything and everyone that was important to me, which is when I would be first in line to destroy it." She smiles sweetly up at the professor. "Is that what you had in mind?"

"Pygmalion is nothing more than a representation of how one man viewed his creation--purely for her physical appearance and perfection, without regard for her personality, soul, depth of character, or humanity."

"Both the play Pygmalion and the musical My Fair Lady explore what happens when a real woman is involved, with vastly differing results. In Pygmalion, Eliza leaves her creator to be with a man who, if he doesn't love her, at least treats her well. In My Fair Lady, a musical comedy, Eliza stays with the man who has verbally abused her and who has difficulty accepting that she has needs and dreams of her own. Neither one can truly be said to be a happy ending."

Anakin blushed to the tips of his ears. "Sorry, Professor."

He cleared his throat. "I think anyone who has ever created something can understand something of what Pygmalion was feeling. When you are the creator, be it of a droid or a statue--you have the control. It's your vision you are bringing to life, even if not literally. You don't have to worry about the messy emotions or the free will of another being." He thought about it. "Which can lead down a very selfish, self-serving path."

*shudders after thinking about what would happen if her consciousness was downloaded into a toaster*

Well, weren't the female replicants kinda... designed to be that way? 'course everyone's gonna lust after 'em. That's their purpose. It'd be weird if folks didn't lust after 'em.

...though, I'm not sure about that ending. Is the guy who kinda looks like Solo a replicant? And why does that other guy look like Lee's Dad with a mustache?

"If it's my essence, the part of me that makes me unique in the Force, that has been transferred through some medical procedure because of some kind of horrific lightsaber duel, for instance, then I would feel very much like myself, no matter if I look like a toaster or a truck or a giant hulking black figure of doom, twisted and evil.." He looked pensive. "But I think that anyone who could overcome the natural predisposition, at least where I come from, against loving something that would look like I would, would have to be someone extraordinary." He gestured at his body. "I have been taught that we are luminous beings inside, not dependent on our bodies to be ourselves, but I can understand that not being an easy adjustment for others to make."

Bridge ponders for a minute, and then pipes up. "I don't think it's foolish at all. For that matter, who gets to define what a 'human' is anyway?"

Yeah, I can see how you'd get really attached with something you build, you know? But, it's not like I'm gonna fall in love with a fuselage or a watch or something.

But, I guess, if you're building something that's human-like, you'd probably make it exactly how you'd want it to be, and therefore easily fall in love with it. *nod*

Re: WHO COULD EVER LOVE A <S>BEAST</S> CYBORG?

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Not at all. It's totally okay to love things that aren't 100% human.

But, like, falling in love with something like, say, a toaster or a bowl or a microwave oven... that'd be kinda weird. I mean, like, say, wanting to marry your toaster and kiss it. That'd be frakked up.

"Because musical theatre audiences expect their romantic pairs to end up together living happily ever after, and at the time the musical was written, Higgins's behavior wasn't considered abusive."

"That's really the question, isn't it?" Anakin scrunched up his forehead. "Aren't these creations, historically, at least, normally made because the creators have a hard time dealing with something with a will of its own? So they build something that they can control? If it gets built with a will of its own, it tends to lead to the same sorts of problems you have with any sentient being--it has its own agenda, its own needs, and not necessarily the ones of its creator."
