Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4

The class was back in the Danger Shop this week, and Tyrion felt as if his weekend had given him a new perspective on this particular class.

The back area of the shop was set up as a boutique, with racks of fashionable and vintage clothing for all occasions and large curtained dressing areas -- including makeup and hair tables -- to the side. A magazine rack placed near the center of the area held a wide variety of current fashion magazines.

Tyrion gathered the students near the front of the area. He hoped he'd be able to hold their attention, even if he was competing with clothing.

"Two weeks ago," he began, "I spoke of some of the areas in which one might be advantaged. The first one we looked at was strength; this week, we'll be looking at beauty." He knew now that the students wouldn't laugh, but he still paused out of the irony of it; what could a dwarf know of beauty?

The stabbing thought passed, and he continued. "You cannot change the form you were born with -- or not without considerable effort and pain. You can, though, make the most of it. Your clothing should be neat, clean, and as high-quality as you can afford." This may have been easier for a Lannister to say.

"Any outfits you wear should make the most of your form without suggesting it might be for sale -- unless, of course, you are for sale. Your hair should be neat and nicely styled, any cosmetics discreetly applied. I won't deny I'm no expert on the fashions of this world, but things have not changed that much."

He drew a breath. "It might seem like a womanly topic, but men are judged on appearance nearly every bit as much. We all have to wear clothes every day; when someone who cares about them is looking, it can't hurt to make them worth looking at." He added something he'd learned the last two days. "It also, according to my most recent bout of insanity, helps if you feel fierce."

He gestured back to the racks of clothing. "This week, I want you to dress and style yourself in something that makes you feel you have the upper hand. something you might wear to meet someone you needed to impress. Then come out and explain what you chose and why."

Petra's mind was racing as soon as she understood what the assignment was. She pretty much knew what she wanted to do, she just hoped she could find the appropriate materials without a mad dash back to her room. Even in fake magic clothes land, she was doubtful as to the availability of great size eleven heels.

She did take note of the mention of changing one's form through great effort and pain. Yeah. That was her in a nutshell right there. But mostly? She was thinking about clothes.

"Okay," Petra announced to the class at large, already flipping through the racks, "I am looking for a ladies' pump, black, size eleven, and I will help anybody who finds it for me with hair, makeup, does this make me look fat, whatever."

Re: PRESENTATIONS [1/16]

[personal profile] wasthecuteone 2012-01-16 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Petra presented herself to Tyrion in a little black dress and heels, carrying a red clutch.

"Okay," she said, "so this is an outfit I could wear...pretty much anywhere. With a blazer I could wear it to a job interview or a business meeting, as is I could wear it to a date, a party, a wedding--my own wedding, if it was at the courthouse--a, I don't know, a press conference. Ideally the shoes would be Louboutins or something similarly status symbol-y, but any black three inch heel will do," even if they made her six-two. Maybe especially because they made her six-two, "and this little black dress is great, it's silk and really well structured, but the variations are endless.

"As for accessories, I chose this clutch because the outfit needed a little color and red is a power color. You want something with some structure, and not too big and unwieldy, for a really great first impression. My jewelry--" small diamond earrings, understated single strand of pearls, gold watch "--is classic and elegant, not too flashy or obnoxious. As for makeup, I went for a neutral eye and a red lip because, again, red is a power color, but for evening I would probably opt for a smokey eye instead. And my hair is up," she said, turning to show off her chignon, "because that looks more put-together and formal or professional. I didn't have time to change my nails," which were currently a pale shade of blue with silver glitter, "and I didn't really want to anyway because I'm not over this color yet so I'd just have changed them back right after class, but if I had I would have gone for a neutral polish. Probably something in the 'nude' family."

Was that more information than Tyrion had been expecting? Oh, well. You got Petra talking about fashion you were in for it. "Did I miss anything?"

Mercy wasn't passing up that offer. She knew well enough that she was never going to be considered beautiful, but she cleaned up well enough with a little effort and maybe some help from a friend.

She found a pair of shoes fairly quickly and brought them over. "These work for you?"

Ben frowned in thought: it would depend on what universe he was in, he supposed. What would impress and intimidate on Coruscant had no meaning to those in Ender's universe, or in Karla's.

"This was kind of tough," Ben admitted, "because what I'd wear at home to impress wouldn't work over the causeway at all--they don't understand what a Jedi is. I'm also seventeen, so I'm not going to be able to do a lot of intimidating based on how young I seem."

He waved his hand down at his black pants, shiny shoes and fitted gray sweater. "I wanted to give the impression that I know how to dress myself, so nothing has holes in it, my pants aren't so low that I'm also showing that I'm also wearing underwear, I've brushed my hair, and so on." He smiled. "If I'm trying to impress anyone on this planet, my clothes will get me through the door. My words would have to do the rest for me."

Dorothy went to the racks of clothes with eyes wide as plates. She couldn't help but feel slightly overwhelmed, not just by the volume of clothes but the varied fashions contained within.

She tugged at her own plain dress for a moment, momentarily self conscious. Then she started looking for something that fit the activity, worried more about hemlines than anything else.

Seifer had found a great white suit (http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b330/skyechic/oracfeqm.jpg) and showed off a bit.

"It doesn't take much to make me look good, and this suit is just the thing."

Mercy had a nice simple blue dress, but with a nice pair of high heeled black shoes and a nice handbag

Her hair and make-up were simply done to accentuate her features.

"I feel comfortable in this. It's nice enough to do an interview or dinner out, but casual enough that I could wear it pretty much anywhere."

Thank goodness for the Danger Shop. Just pulling clothing off of any other store rack would be a nightmare for a guy who needed to account for wings, after all.

Warren couldn't help but shop by designer label. That was just the way he was made. Overall? He spent way more time on his hair.

Warren just kind of shrugged as he held out his arms. A slick black business suit, with a light blue button-down shirt and a black tie.

And his hair was perfect, thank you.

"Honestly, this isn't all that different from how I usually dress, except I don't really bother with the tie. But it is the sort of thing that you wear to impress people, I mean, in my world at least. I didn't get out much as a kid, no, but I was kind of raised to be a firm believer in the phrase 'dress for success,' anyhow.

"Those are a definite 'maybe,'" Petra said, flashing a smile at the other girl. "Wow, go you. Too short, too loose, too low-cut, too...too," she muttered, flipping through the rack.

Mercy had found a nice blue dress that seemed dressy, but not too fancy or formal. "I'm thinking I'll just leave my hair down and just do a touch of make-up. Do you think that would work?"
