Food Tour of Fandom [Mon, Period 2]

When Bond's class entered the Danger Shop today, they would have found themselves at the top of steep, grassy hill. At the bottom of the hill and off to one side, there were a number of trestle tables set up with food. Bond stood at the top of the hill with them, holding what looked suspiciously like a large wheel of cheese.

"It may come as something of a surprise, but one of the staples of British cuisine is cheese," he began. "In fact their are somewhere in the region of seven hundred varieties of cheese produced in Britain, many of which are named after the counties they originated from, some of which have been produced there so long that they're covered by Protected Designation of Origins, which basically means that the cheese has to have been made in a certain area, in a certain way to be legally sold under that name. This tradition of cheese-making has also led to other traditions, like the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, which involves a number of men and women gathering on Cooper's Hill on the last Monday in May, then chasing a cheese down the very steep hill for glory and the cheese."

By now the class could probably guess where this was going.

"Now the cheese traditionally used in the race is a Double Gloucester, much like the one I'm holding, but there's also a wide selection of cheeses for you to try at the bottom of the hill."

With that, Bond smiled at them and tossed the cheese down the side of the hill.

Chase the cheese? Seriously?

Jake was laughing, but hey, he'd had worst classes and going at neckbreaking speed down a steep hill wasn't something that was going to stop him. So off he went, down the hill.

Sam let out a war whoop and dove after the cheese.

Not literally. Even she knew better than to attempt to slide down a snow-free hill without any sort of sled or protective gear.

Lion-o was trying hard not to laugh when he realized what was about to happen.

Lion-o took off running after the cheese. He was fast, but he also got a leg cramp halfway down the hill and had to hobble the rest of the way.

First, Caroline was not about to break her heels running down a hill for the sake of cheese. Second, she so didn't need the anguish that would come with the consumption of eight pounds of cheese. Ugh.

Still, she would follow the tiny class pack and pretend for the sake of her grade.
