Library, Sunday 10/23

Raven was in a delightful mood as she opened up the library that morning. She was still riding high on the emotions of the dance last night, not to mention her boyfriend visiting the island.

After spending some time tidying up the library and shelving books, Raven took her seat at the front desk. She had her laptop with her, of course, and started to pass the time browsing her favorite Rumor Gal websites.

Still on epic slow play, sneaking on the computer when the wee ones are sleeping and not trying to pound on the keyboard. Nephew #1 is very fond of pushing buttons and seems drawn to the power button....

"Hey, Raven," Tara said, when she wandered in around the middle of the afternoon. She wanted an SAT study guide, but she'd take a few minutes catching up first. "It's so weird that was our last Homecoming -- I mean, as students at least."

"Hello, Tara," Raven said, giving her a warm smile as she came in. "It is very strange, I agree! But I do not wish to think too hard about graduating and having to leave. Fandom has been my home for so long now."

"We still have practically a year,counting summer," Tara said, trying not to be that much of a buzzkill. "But. Is it weird I'm kind of glad things will be back to normal?"

Or the island version of same.

"You mean with all the visitors returning to their homes?" Raven said, shutting her laptop closed. "The excitement and happiness of so many people has been enjoyable, but it can be overwhelming in the long-term. It will be pleasant to return to routine, though I do wish some people could stay longer."

"Mmmm," Tara said, shrugging a little. She didn't feel exactly the same way, but that was her problem, not Raven's. "Good visit with Jono, huh?"

"Yes," Raven said, "though he is not the only one. There are many friends returning that I have not yet had the chance to speak to, such as Dinah." And Kennedy, but she didn't want to mention her and bring up any awkwardness.

"I talked to Dinah at that fighting ... demonstration .. thing, parents' weekend," Tara shared, pleased to shift the subject a bit. "She seemed -- happy. Hurting, but happy. Is her arm better yet?"

"I have not seen her yet, but I would assume so," Raven said. "Enough time has passed for her to heal naturally. She did not wish me or Karla to use our gifts to heal her for fear that it would attract attention. We even offered to heal everyone in the hospital so that her recovery would not stand out."

Raven and Karla logic was special.

"I think people m-might freak out a little bit about that," Tara said, as carefully as she could manage. Seriously? "But, um ... it was nice of you to ask?"

"Her world is much like that of my mother, where people with powers are not uncommon, though they still seek to protect themselves by maintaining a secret identity," Raven said with a tiny shrug. "It saddens me to see a friend in pain when I can do something to help, but I think I understand her reasoning about drawing unwanted attention to herself."

"Yeah, you ... can't go around healing people in the hospital," Tara mumbled. "But I'm sorry you had to see her through that."

This was not going well. She felt a strong sick wave that she should have gotten someone to heal her mother, no matter what the taboos and impossibilities around healing magic were in her world. No matter that her mother would have hatred the idea. She should have tried.

"I wanted to get an SAT study guide," she told her shoes, a bit desperately. "I mean, that's why I'm here."

Raven chewed on her lip, feeling bad for mentioning both healing and mother in the same breath. She had wanted to help Tara's mother, though she understood Tara's reasoning -- and she'd been afraid to offer and give her false hope and then fail, because she knew now some things were beyond her skills, much as she refused to admit it half the time.

"SAT study guide?" she asked, seizing on the subject change. "What is that? What does SAT stand for?"

"Um." Tara totally knew this, it was just going to take a second to get her off the mental track she'd been on. "Scholastic Aptitude Test. It's the thing you have to take if you're going to go to college -- in my world, anyhow."

She winced. "I really should have started studying, like, months ago."

"Then I am certain we will have such guides in the library," Raven said, turning to the library computer to call up the location of those kind of books.

"Do you know where you are going to go to college?" she asked as she searched. "And what you will study there? Or is there still time to make those kind of decisions?" She wasn't too sure how college in the real world worked.

"I know I'm going back to California?" Tara offered. "Beyond that ... kind of depends where I can get in. And I have no idea what I'll study. Sociology, maybe. I don't need to decide until after my freshman year."

"Then for your first year you can take classes in many different topics to see what interests you the most?" Raven said. "That seems like it would be very enjoyable. But I suppose they will not compare to the classes we take here." Let alone the teachers.

"No way," Tara said. "I'm going to have to take math. And real science, not the kind that's about blowing things up that they sometimes have here."

She almost sounded excited.

"It will be quite a change," Raven said, unable to hide a smile at the enthusiasm she was picking up under the surface. "But I suppose normal will be almost refreshing."

"I mean, I'm still going to be a witch and everything," Tara said. "So it can't get too normal. But ... maybe a little more normal? Class-wise, anyhow?"

"I have little basis for comparison, I fear," Raven said, "but I have often heard others express that sort of wish, so there is nothing unusual about it."

[And it flew away from me today. :) ]
