Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History [Session 1, Period 4]

When the class arrived in the danger shop, they would find themselves surrounded by several images of women from different time periods. Annja was leaning against a pillar and when the last student arrived, she pressed a button on the remote in her hand and the images froze.

"Welcome to Well-Behaved Women Rarely Make History. I'm Annja and I'll be your instructor." She gave them all a smile. "I know, I don't look much older than most of you, but trust me, I have the experience and the knowledge. I have a Masters degree in Archaeology and I'm working on my Doctorate. I want to say that I commend all of you for deciding to take a class that will rerquire thinking and interaction on a Friday afternoon." She looked around the class. "Starting next week, we'll begin the tour of history and the women that we know a great deal about -- and those that we do not. However. today's class is going to be more laid back. We're going to do introductions -- yeah, I know, but it's still the first week, so I get to make you do it. I want you to tell me your name, your grade, why you took this class and a woman in history that you admire or want to learn more about. I'll even go first."

She straightened. "I'm Annja Creed-Nast and I graduated from Fandom High. You can call me Annja, or, if you absolutely must be formal, Mrs. Nast. I will warn you, however, that I'm not used to being called by my married name. My husband also lives in Fandom and runs the sporting goods shop in town. As for female historical figure, I feel a particularly strong pull to Joan of Arc, or Jeanne d'Arc." She looked around the room and gestured at a student. "And now your turn."

Before class ended she lifted a hand. "Could I please speak to Miss Blythe and Miss Shira after class."

Wesley straightened up. "My name is Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. I'm a senior, and I'm taking this class because I've trained most of my life to recognize the strength and skill women possess in a battle capacity." He paused, giving the next question thought before answering, "While I already know a great deal about her, I'd rather like to study the life story of Xin Rong (http://buffy.wikia.com/wiki/Xin_Rong)."

"I'm Quinn Fabray, and I'm a senior," Quinn said. "I took this class because I'm interested in maximizing my power as a woman, even though we still make seventy-five cents on the dollar. A woman I'd like to talk more about is Margaret Thatcher. Not everybody liked her, but she was one of the most important political leaders of her time."

Rilla was incredibly nervous to be called out by the teacher like that from the beginning, and it showed in how much she lisped.

"I'm Rilla Blythe, and I'm a sophomore," she said, enunciating carefully, "and thith wath not really a clath at home. I admired Queen Victoria greatly."

"Gabrielle, and I'm a senior," she began. (Anyone within close enough range could probably still catch a whiff of bacon, courtesy of last night.) "I'm also the queen of my Amazon tribe."

Oh, gods, there was a story about to happen here. You could tell.

"I had a friend named Terreis, once -- she was the princess of the tribe when I met her, and she told me 'It's a man's world, Gabrielle -- not because it should be, but because we let them have it.' That always stuck with me, and as a bard I want to make sure the world knows these stories. So they don't forget, because these women shouldn't be forgotten."

She started pacing up and down beside her seat, caught up in the earnestness her little speech.

"I've met so many that I couldn't choose just one -- Pandora, Lao Ma, Boadicea, Helen, my best friend Xena -- and it doesn't seem like anyone realizes how amazing they were. That's not right."

Gabrielle, people had probably at least heard of most of them. Not Xena, but you might as well get used to that part already.

Princess Rosella of Daventry

Re: [9/2] Talk/Pass Notes

[identity profile] perilless.livejournal.com 2011-09-02 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Rosella was feeling terribly proud of herself as she sat in the classroom with a self-satisfied grin. Her mother would positively die if she found out that not only had Rosella managed to find a way to get herself signed up for a class, but also that it was a class titled like this.

Fridays were easily the best day ever.

Rilla waited around after class, looking extremely nervous. "You wished to see me, Mrs. Nash?"

Rilla would never call an adult by their first name.

"My name is Princess Rosella," she offered with a smile once it was her turn, giving an ironically well-behaved duck of her head, "of Daventry. I am a senior and I took this class because I certainly intend to make an awful lot of history, and I do not intend to do so by being well-behaved! I am from a much different world than this one, so I am eager to learn as much about the strong women of history entrenched in its rich culture as I can."

"Thank the gods," Gabrielle said after a brief, resigned sigh over the fact that of course she hadn't heard of Xena. No one she'd talked to had. THIS WAS SO WRONG.

Focus, Gabs.

Also, Annja, she might argue with those lessons later, because her canon is made of crack historical records never seemed to match up to her experiences somehow.

"I'm Hanna Marin, junior," she said when it was her turn. "I'm taking this class because it sounded cool. For a history class. I admire Queen Elizabeth. Not the current one, but the one from, like, ancient times. I saw that movie. She was fierce!"

"Rosella would be more than fine," said Rosella with a little bit of a laugh. "And I don't suppose I need too much help; I've already been branded as ill-behaved, but I rather would like to continue the trend. There is an appalling lack of legendary women in the world I am from, and I fully intend to change that."

"And I know my mother would have liked much the same for me," Rosella said with a mischievous grin. "As a matter of fact, she should find me quite ill-behaved for taking this class in the first place! It was hardly on her roster of approved lessons for princesses and heirs!"

"I'm Elphaba Thropp, a senior, and I took this class because I wanted to learn more about the women of this world," she introduced. "As for those I already know about, I'd say Jane Goodall is the one I definitely admire."

She flailed mentally, trying to think of someone. "I don't know." She might have looked a little worried at that.

"My name is Rapunzel." Rapunzel paused to frown in concentration. "I am a 'junior'." She thought that was the right word. "And I admire my mother!"

Who wasn't a historical as far as Rapunzel knew, but who was also the only woman she knew enough about to want to emulate.
