Physical Education, Period 4 - 8/19

"Okay, it's been about over a week since anything freaky happened around here," Guy announced once people arrived. "And it's the last day of class for the term."

Those things may have been connected in some bizarre way that only ~~players~~ tiny blue aliens could understand.

"So, this'll be easy for you all. You're just gonna run laps around the gym." Yes. Easy. Weren't you all so glad to take this class? "I don't want to grade a final, so you're all not getting one. Plus, it's summer school."

Out of the kindness of his heart, folks! Really!

"Now get running."

Miley Ray Stewart

Guess who was coordinated enough to trip all over herself on her very first lap?

Ugh. Miley hated sports. And running totally counted.

Jim Hawkins

Yeah, Jim was dealing with the knowledge that the rest of this period was going to be spent running in circles in the typical manner of a fifteen year-old who totally hated doing repetitive anything.

He was going to run extra fast, because laps were now totally a race, and so help anybody who tried to pass him. At least until he got a stitch in his side or something.

Jacob Black

Pfffffffffft. Too easy. Jake was so just going to pass Jim by. Werewolves didn't get stitches in their side.

"... Hey!"

Yeah, you better believe that Jim was going to push himself to try to keep up, now. Maybe he didn't stand a chance, but like Jim had ever let that stop him before.

This could not possibly end well for him.

"What? You looked like you were falling asleep on your feet there," Jake called back at Jim. Sometimes he was an ass.

Oh, man. There was no way Jim was going to let this one go.

"Can you blame me? It's just running in circles." His feet smacked hard against the floor as he pushed to catch up. "I have to say, I liked the view before better, though."

"But I just gave you something to do," Jake pointed out. And did Jim realise talking was just going to get him that stitch faster? "If you ran fast enough, we can catch up with Miley and you can complain about her ass."

William Murdoch

"Why would I complain about Miley's, though?" Jim, being fifteen, had also outgrown cootie shots and was actually starting to realize that people of the opposite gender but the same species as himself were kind of fun to look at. "Hers isn't all that bad."

Jake was laughing now and possibly slowing down a little. "Maybe you should try and catch up then to get that better view."

And if Jake was slowing down some, that meant that Jim didn't have to kill himself to keep up! That worked out nicely, right there.

"I'm sure we'll lap her sooner or later," he replied, his tone light. "She doesn't look like she's doing so well."

He might have been verging on winded before they slowed down, but at least he hadn't been tripping over himself.

No, she looked rather tragic, but Jake was nice enough to not voice that at least. "We can cheer her on. Too bad we didn't bring any pompoms."

"Pompoms?"

There wasn't much in the way of cheerleading back on Montressor, unfortunately. And there hadn't been a team on the island since the start of summer, so really, Jim had no idea.

"You know..." Jake shot Jim a look before the whole possibly not from this world thing hit him and he chuckled. "No cheerleaders, huh? That's tough."

"No cheerleaders," Jim confirmed, wrinkling his nose as they jogged. "No Twinkies, aeroplanes, reality television, or Disneyland, either. But I'd like to think that I'm kind of catching on."

"Almost," Jake said. "Cheerleaders are much more important. They're pretty girls in short skirts who cheer the school's sport team on. You know, by dancing and jumping around."

Caroline was so going to hurt him if she heard this description.

"Dancing and jumping around," Jim echoed, and then he laughed. "I didn't know Fandom High even had sports teams."

Physical Education class didn't count as a team.

"We don't," Jake snickered, "but we've got cheerleaders. I figure that's about the most important part. Though, I suppose a sports team would mean we get to see them more."

"Well, yeah," Jim agreed. "I mean, we don't have them on Montressor, but I'm willing to bet that if we had anything worth cheering, someone would have thought up the same thing."

"I'm sure it will be a guy," he laughed. "So no sports or anything on this Mont-place?

"If there were, I sure never had anything to do with them, no. Its a mining planet. People are more interested in pounding away at quarries than organizing dodgeball tournaments or whatever."

... Jim's experiences with actual sports beyond surfing were kind of limited to the classes he'd taken since coming here.

"Dodgeball tournaments aren't really big here either," Jake assured him, wondering if there was even such a thing. "But I can see how it isn't the first thing you'd want to do after working in a mine."

He frowned. "It's entertainment, though. So people do a sport like football or baseball for a job and it gives those working something to watch while they relax."

"Yeah? Just... sitting and watching?"

Jim really couldn't see the draw. Where was the fun in sports if you weren't up and participating in them? He'd get squirmy and slip out halfway through a game if he wasn't allowed to run around, too.

Jake snickered. "Not everyone likes it," he assured him.

Mercy Thompson

Laps. Easiest thing ever. Mercy took off and flew like the wind, indulging herself with the run.

"Okay, good," Jim decided, picking up his pace just slightly all over again. "I mean, I was already worried that Earth was full of crazy, backwards people. If everyone enjoyed watching them more than actually getting out there and playing, I'd have to start really believing it."

"Oh, we're definitely full of crazy and backwards people," Jake snorted. "And just because you like watching a game, doesn't rule out you can't play it too. It's just that those pros would wipe the floor with most people. So it's a bit of a different level of playing."

"I guess," Jim mused. "I think I'd still try to take them on, though. A game's a game either way."

Watching just didn't strike him as any fun at all.

"You know, I can believe that," Jake laughed because the kid had just tried to keep up with him.
