Cooking for Beginners & Not-So-Beginners, Monday 3, Week 7
"This will be our last class together," Steve said a little sadly at the beginning of the class. "I want to thank you, you've been a great group, and I hope you've all learned something here." Even if it was just "coffee beans do not go in ice cream." Shudder. "This week we're going to make something that you probably never thought of making on your own: pizza! Yes, you can call for delivery and it'll be here in thirty minutes or less, but what if the pizza place is closed when your craving strikes? What if you want something the pizza place doesn't carry? Luckily, pizza is really easy, especially if you don't make your own dough. Don't worry, if you want to make your own dough I have an option for you, too."
"Your first option is to use a flatbread, like naan or pita, or a prebaked pizza crust. At least one of these should be available at the grocery store, and I like to keep pitas on hand anyway; they're very useful. You could even use something like a tortilla in a pinch, but the pizza wouldn't be very handleable. Your second option is to buy pizza dough, either from the grocery store or from your favorite pizza place--they're usually open to it. Your third is, as I said before, to make your own dough. From there, the possibilities are endless. Pizza isn't just tomato sauce, cheese, and pepperoni. You could put goat cheese on there and asparagus, or bacon. Or Nutella. Anything that strikes your fancy. And especially with the first option--which is, I admit, kind of cheating--your pizza can be ready before the delivery guy even gets there, since you're just putting it in the oven to warm up, really.
"We won't be making pizza dough today because we don't really have time, but I've provided some flatbreads, and some pre-made pizza dough, along with the instructions for use, for those of you who want to try that out. We have lots ofhandwavey, including junk food topping options, so go ahead and put whatever you want on there. Get creative! Maybe you'll find a new and delicious combination."
