Defying Death, Friday, First Period

The Danger Shop was a darkened, empty parking lot today. Well, mostly empty. There were several ramps of various size lined up, along with several sets of pads, helmets, and white jumpsuits. It probably wasn't tough to see where this was going. It was probably easier when Dick rode up to them on a motorcycle, took his helmet off, and started talking.

"Evel Knieval was probably the best known daredevil in the world. If you put something between two ramps and gave him money, he would probably try to jump over it, whether that thing was animals, cars, buses, trucks, or the Snake River Canyon. He destroyed his body several times during his career, but this was still a man who made a living jumping over things on a motorcycle pretty much every week during the 70's."

"There's no real trick to motorcycle jumps. Really, it's all about staying on a good line with the ramp and going fast enough to get the needed air. And more than anything, it's about being absolutely convinced that you're not going to crash horribly, sending you to the hospital for weeks if you're lucky. If you don't have that faith, you should probably stop before you get near the ramp."

"The shop's been programmed to make riding the motorcycles easy for you, so throw on your jumpsuits, pads, and helmets, hop on your bike, and start jumping."

And with that, Dick put his helmet back on, peeled off on his bike, and ended up jumping ten soda trucks. Oh, Danger Shop....

Riding a bike was absolutely nothing like riding a horse, given that most horses had the sense not to try jumping snakes and lions, but they way she needed to hold her body was similar enough that Cara managed not to crash.

Yeah, the Danger Shop had to be toning down that motorcycle engine, because even Stephanie's rinky-dink little bike back home sounded louder, she was pretty sure.

Did that stop her eyes from going way, way wide as she listened to the lecture? No, and mostly that was a case of ohmygodohmygodohmygodreally he wants us to do that COOOOOOOOOOOOL rather than HOLYCRAPWHATAIEEEEEEEEEE, but she wouldn't object at all if people took it for the latter.

Look, there were reasons that someday Bruce would say she reminded him of Dick a little bit in certain ways.

A forty-foot jump on a motorcycle was a lot less scary a prospect when you (secretly) jumped off highrise buildings in the middle of the night on a regular basis, and while Stephanie's training in the way of dealing with motorcycles had been more focused on how to force-dismount biker-gang members when they were charging at her full speed she knew how to ride one. (She didn't have a Robin-cycle of her own yet, no, and that wasn't for lack of pestering Bruce about it. Actually maybe that was because she kept pestering him about it.)

This was going to be totally easy, right?

Actually, surprise, surprise, it turned out to be exactly that.

Also -- "Woohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"

Also fun.

Roy was totally going for the thirteen sharks. How could he not?

Roy strapped on his helmet, got on his bike, and proceeded to jump over thirteen sharks, yelling, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" all the way.

When he hit the ground wheels-first and didn't die or screw up, he brought the dirt bike to a stop, yanked his helmet off, and yelled, "THAT WAS AWESOME!"
